What a pain in the a**.

That was the thought that kept running through Talis' mind as she waited on the cool, rocky lakeshore.  Having to do this here was just ridiculous, and it made her want to punch a certain fool bronzerider for the consequences he and his dragon had brought down on everyone.  Faranth forbid she be able to drop by Western to visit her friend (on free time for them both, of course); no, there had to be special permissions and they had to go to some neutral location outside a Weyr, and someone else would have to take time out of their day to drop him off and then pick him up again. (If they stuck around like a chaperone, she might just scream.) It was all so stupid.  They didn't need to go anywhere.  A beach, to lay out and fry in the sun?  A Hold, to go shopping?  Please.

Her hood up against the chill in the air - though it wasn't nearly as cold here as at High Reaches - the bluerider brooded over the absurdity of it all from atop a rock and lobbed a smooth stone into the water.  Holleth was settled close by, poised and alert, as fastidiously clean and well-kept as ever.

With permission from the Candidatemaster, he'd finally managed to coordinate his rest day to one that would fit her busy schedule and secured a ride outside of the Weyr. To say he was mildly annoyed was an understatement, especially knowing why these restrictions were now in place. Some rider with too big of an ego to consider the consequences of acting out at a Hatching... Meanwhile, Lauthisen and Talis had found themselves being slowly fried by the sun.

He dismounted, quietly thanking the rider that had brought him. They would have a few hours to themselves, which was all he supposed he could ask for. It was surreal to see Holleth fully grown now, every inch of him as quietly regal as the day he'd been hatched. It was easy to miss the small, hooded figure seated nearby, his eyes briefly tracking the rock she threw into the cold waters of the lake. His lips twitched upward, and Lauthisen quietly made his way over, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket.

"One of you looks a lot different," He noted, nodding amiably to Holleth while settling on a rock next to Talis.

If asked if he had deliberately posed himself, Holleth would have adamantly denied it, but he did happen to arch his neck and hold his wings just so when their company came into view. His eyes swam with pleasant blues and greens, and he lowered his head to the humans' level to have a good look at the friend they hadn't seen in so very long and gave a low, polite croon of greeting.

"Dragons do have a way of getting bigger," Talis responded, pulling her hood back so that she, too, could get a better look at the young man. She was little more demonstrative than her dragon, but she had half a smile for her former Sands-partner. "And you're looking better than the last time we saw you, so I guess that makes me the boring one who hasn't changed at all."

Not that she had noticed, at any rate, and Holleth agreed with that assessment.

Lauthisen was just oblivious enough to not even realize that Holleth might not look at spectacular as he did in that moment, admiring his sleek profile and his elegant posture. The croon was enough to finally make him crack a smile, and the young man slowly admired him some more. He wasn't quite brazen enough to assume the blue would appreciate being touched, but there was no harm in looking him over.

He snorted at Holleth's rider, however, but didn't bother to stop his own, faint smirk from appearing. "Considering how I looked last time, I'd prefer to be boring." His shoulder still bore the thickened scars where the green had savaged him, and he was forced to exercise it to this day to keep it from getting too stiff. A small price to pay, considering he still retained full use of it.

"You could have gotten yourself scored up by Thread," He continued after a moment. "Might have been almost as fun as a dragonet mauling."

Holleth whuffled softly in Lauthisen's general direction, assrssing the state of the young man while respecting his personal space. Given his own feelings on personal space, the dark blue was very conscious of others'; certain people and dragons were more welcome in his little bubble, but he would never just assume that he was welcome in someone else's. Still, he found Lauthisen very intriguing, much moreso than most humans, since he was one of the few that His had a real attachment to...in her own way, at least.

"Oh, undoubtedly," Talis replied dryly. "Holleth had a blast with it. Didn't you, buddy?" The blue snorted in response, snapping his tail in distaste. "You guys were just catching up, anyway. I had a head start on my fair share." She scratched at the bridge of her nose, where the scar ran across it.

As far as Lauthisen was concerned, Holleth was an ideal dragon that anyone would have been honored to have.... and he'd had the good taste to pick Talis, naturally. The only downside was that they were at High Reaches--and that was only a downside because it made visiting tricky. He wasn't oblivious to the fact that she'd taken time out of her schedule to come see him, but he wouldn't claim to be flattered or awed. Glad, however... yes.

"I can only imagine," He said with a derisive twist of his lips. But fighting Thread was what they were meant to do, and Lauthisen knew neither of them were cowardly enough to try and avoid that fate. As for catching up, well, he could only concede the point with a nod of his head. Fair enough.

"It's just as well you Impressed when you did," He paused to roll his eyes, "Killakeeth's clutch produced some strong dragons, for sure, but the sire she chose was really young and inexperienced. She didn't drive him off the sands for whatever reason and a lot of the hatchlings got really upset. Someone died."

Maybe they would have died anyway, but it was definitely a huge black mark in Lauthisen's book.

As Holleth settled into a prim sit, content to simply be present but not to interject unless prompted, it was Talis' turn to snort when Lauthisen brought up Western's recent clutch. "I'd heard it could have gone better. Bad enough that half the Candidates have to be deadglows, but one of the clutchparents?" She shook her head in disapproval. "For all everyone thought that Southern Boll was clutch was odd, at least they didn't kill anyone, and not for lack of a reason to."

There'd been no shortage of idiot behavior even then. What was it about Hatchings that seemed to bring it out? In Candidates, spectators, parents - Faranth, it was apalling, and it could get people killed. "They replaced our Candidatemaster after what happened at Holleth's hatching, but I don't know how much good it will do. There's no cure for stupid."

She'd liked Gr'del, quite honestly, so she'd been sorry to see him demoted. She supposed time would tell if the change made any difference, but she had her share of doubts.
