There was some anxiety from Alumet as the days drew nearer to the Touching. Her attention was rather frequently taken by her Gold, who seemed idly amused by the whole thing, allowing Hers to fret. Zenobiath had no concerns, after all. Her little ones were doing well, and they were carefully tended through the entire process. The Gold knew what to do.

Today was the day, though, and there was, perhaps, some small apprehension. Her little ones were going to be touched by other hands, as the Candidates sought their lifemates. It was odd, thinking that it was not that terribly long ago that she'd had the same done to her own shell. Her mind brushed Aresoth's gently, encouraging him to come, They're ready, love. As am I. Gently she turned one of her eggs in its wallow, her tail moving to slightly encircle her clutch. Yes...It was time. Her love and assurance washed over every egg, for they were meeting their potential lifelong companions today. They would do beautifully.

The soft touch of Zenobiath's mind against his had Aresoth lift his head and turn it towards the hatching sands. His eyes whirled a mix of blue and green as a thoughtful thrum vibrated his chest. I would not miss it, dear hearts. His wedged head turned to where C'ryn was seated at his table, looking over a couple of hides, not particularly paying attention to anything really. Mine, Zenobiath has requested we be present during the Touching. Perhaps you can help to soothe Hers' anxiety some. C'ryn had raised his head to look at Aresoth as he felt the thought and then the bronze was gone from the ledge.

Circling lazily, Aresoth landed gently upon the sands, his eyes looking over his golden sister and their clutch. He had no concern for the candidates at the moment. They would come and he knew they would be on their best behavior or else F'dral would have their hides more then likely. Walking carefully over to Zenobiath and the eggs he lowered his head to let it gently brush against her own. It will be great to see how they interact with one another, to give them the chance to find Theirs. His tone was soft as he spoke it gently.

Moving onto the sands C'ryn let out a sigh as he ran a hand through his slightly mussed dark hair. His course took him over to where Alumet was and he nodded to her, a soft smile on his lips. "You doing alright?" He was sure he probably asked that a lot now but it seemed as if the woman was a bit more anxious about things then she normally was.

Ah, Zenobiath was much more at ease with Aresoth there. Bumping her head to his, she shifted an egg, her eyes deep plum with love. Yes....He was right.

Alumet grinned, "Yeah...Nervous as anything, but what can you do. Here we go." Zenobiath had this handled.

The day was upon them.

Western Weyr had arrived not a candlemark before, delivering their Candidates, all of whom had been herded into a semi-circle just outside the Weyrling Barracks. High Reaches own Candidates had been there, ready to welcome them--and to ensure their guests were treated with proper hospitality. Though F'dral had his own opinions about Western Weyr, it was not his place to decide who was welcome and who was not. He was not Weyrleader, and he would instead follow the orders given him from the top.

If D'mon and Zheria wished to continue to host the island continent's Candidates, than so be it.

He had T'nus and the rest of his assistants stations on either side of the half-circled group. Western's own Candidateamster was also present, along with their own selection of assistants. All the better for it, really--not that he couldn't keep a group three times the size before them in line--but he wasn't about to risk any of the precious eggs upon the Sand. Once he was certain all the Candidates were present, he spoke.

His brows were knit, a frown on his usually stern and severe features. He lifted a hand, expecting the Candidates to silence themselves. High Reaches Candidates were trained to know F'dral did not like to have to demand a room be quieted when he was ready to speak. Thankfully, the hushening of voices was satisfactory. "Before I lead you to the Sands, I have a few words to remind each of you about your behavior this day." He let his eyes drift over the crowd of Candidates. "I don't care how long you've stood, how many Hatchings you've been present for, or how much you think you know. Listen well, for I won't tolerate any misbehavior on the Sands today."

He paused, letting the weight and seriousness of his words sink in.

"Know this-- Once you set foot on those Sands, your idle chit-chat and small-talk with your friends ends. You're here to focus on the eggs. If you'd rather play games or aren't mature enough to take this time seriously, remain behind now and one of my assistants can pack your things or ship you back to Western." Of this, F'dral was quite serious indeed, and he let his gaze sweep over the faces turned towards him.

"You will enter the Sands respectfully, quietly, and slowly. You will bow respectfully to Zenobiath and Aresoth, if he's present, and you will then make your way towards the eggs. Spend time with whichever egg or eggs you desire. I suggest moving among each egg, but if you feel compelled to linger, and so long as you're not upsetting the egg in question, or others around it, do as you will. Remember, though, that nothing is guaranteed. Even if you touch only one egg, and spend the entirety of the time getting to better know that egg, you ensure nothing."

"Once you've moved to each egg, or have had enough, do not leave the Sands. Retire to the Barracks and wait until the Touching has finished. You may chat quietly among your peers then, but I don't want anyone disturbing those still spending time with the eggs, the eggs themselves, or the clutch parents. We enter together, we leave together." No exceptions.

"If you're asked to stop something--stop immediately. Don't give any lip. Don't make excuses. If we remove you from the Touching, or pull you from the Sands, we'll discuss why later and on your head be it. Don't test any of us--don't get too friendly with your peers and neglect the eggs. Watch your thoughts and feelings--these eggs are sensitive. Most importantly, remember that they are still growing and developing--they may have their own personalities, but they are sensitive to the world around them and each of your thoughts and feelings. I don't care what these eggs send you, what they dig up, or what they might do to upset you--I expect you to be grateful they acknowledge you at all. If you need to compose yourself or they touch upon something sensitive, take yourself to the sidelines or talk to one of us to help ground you. Don't take anything out on these eggs! No swapping, no swatting, no punching--this means physically and emotionally. You know what you're getting into when you agreed to be a Candidate--if you can't handle it, get out now." His frown deepened.

"Touch the eggs gently. You can think at them, you can talk quietly to them. If the egg seems to be getting upset, best to step away. Don't overcrowd or overwhelm the eggs--you don't know if the hatchlings inside want that attention, or are easily overwhelmed. Wait your turn and form a queue if you see a crowd gathering. Remember, your focus is on getting to know these eggs--use your best judgment and if you have questions, ask one of us, before you assume or do anything."

With that, the man gave a low grunt.

"Understood?" He expected them on their best-behavior... particularly those of High Reaches. One trick, and he'd haul them off the Sands and drag them out of the Weyr himself if he had to.... these eggs were the future of the Weyr, and guaranteed Pern's survival. He wasn't going to take any chances today.

Closes: TBD.

Once this ends, F'dral will call the Candidates back to the barracks, and Aral will usher the Western Weyr kids back home. If your dragonrider was a transport, they are welcome to sit in the stands to watch. They also can linger in the Bowl or near the mouth of the entrance. Riders may either write PRPs or, if they're near the Hatching Sands or in the stands, can RP here. We'll leave it a little organic but if you want folks to touch the eggs, now's the time to do it!

Welcome to the Festive Mystery Clutch!
Please keep the following rules in mind.

  • IC Action will result in IC Consequence. Remember this!
  • You will not get to break or crack the eggs. Don't even try. If an egg is meant to break or crack, staff will dictate this.
  • Misbehaving now can get a character banned from the Hatching itself or kicked out as a Candidate. Don't test F'dral, A'ral, or staff!
  • Staff will try to respond to ICly to individuals touching the eggs. Depending on RL and time, we cannot guarantee a response to every post, but we will try! We will guarantee responses to at least two or three of your posts -- so make sure if you want your Candidate to meet an egg in particular that you have it be one of their first.
  • Please make sure you mention which egg your character is touching by the proper name and in bold type i.e The Ding Dong Bell Egg
  • Do not move your Candidate again in the RP once they touch a egg until you get a reply! If you move them on before staff responds, we will not write a response! Additionally, it sometimes makes it hard for us to know if they're still there or not as sometimes we're responding to quotes and not reading the entire RP.
  • Please keep in mind that you might not get to all the eggs. IC events might cause the eggs to be untouchable or for it to end early. If you have a favorite egg I would suggest touching it early because we will not keep this open or delay closing once we're ready to move on.
  • Please do not edit or backdate which egg you touched. We'll try to keep things moving in the RP.
  • If you feel staff has missed responding to your touching post, please PM/DM either Uta or Mr Cheri. Note: Cheri prefers DMs, as he has a mostly full inbox. We'll quote individuals with their eggs response but please understand that it might take some time. Give us a day or two, as we both have RL jobs and aren't always able to sign online daily.
  • We will move slowly due to how many eggs need to be touched AND the fact that we have less time OOCly than we used to!
  • You will not likely touch every egg OOCly. So pick your favorites and get your Candidate to them! We cannot guarantee responses to from every egg to every Candidate due to the size. We will get to as many as possible, but to keep us from suffering burnout, we may need to wrap well before all the eggs are touched.
  • If something goes wrong ICly or the Queen gets upset, the Touching could close early!
  • Please remember your Candidates have been TRAINED on how to act around the eggs! Don't play them like fools or idiots because this is IMPORTANT to them. They could get banned from Candidacy if they act poorly during a Touching or barred from the Hatching. They all know better, whether they are new to the Weyr or not!
  • It is okay if you don't touch all the eggs! You can either claim they did and got no response OR that they didn't bother with all of them and that's okay too. Not every egg has to be touched.
  • You may join in or make new characters as long as the Touching is running. Once it closes, it will be assumed that all Candidates participated whether they actually did so ICly or not.
  • To keep us from burnout, we ask you only bring in Candidates that you want to have eligible for the Hatching! You can assume your other Candidates are there, just not the focus.
  • You do not have to participate in the Touching to have a shot at Impressing from the clutch.
  • You may RP with others while touching eggs or waiting for responses. You may also have your characters remove themselves to the sidelines or the stands to chatter. Candidate should not leave the Hatching Sands though. If they do not wish to continue, they can sit quietly in the tiers until F'dral or A'ral usher them to leave.
  • Once again, for sake of RP it is encouraged to touch one egg, and not move on to another until you are given a Staff Response. If your Candidate leaves the egg before the response, you won't get one at all.
  • Any other questions? PM Uta or Mr Cheri

    Clutch Specifics
  • Don't linger near an egg for more than one response! One response is about all you'll get. Why? Because longer responses only add to our burnout. You might be able to linger if the RP is appropriate, but you're only ensured one actual reply from a staffer. If the egg is actually seemingly having a discussion or in the middle of requesting more information, it's OK to do as they bid, but don't keep touching the same egg just to try to get more replies if the egg seems to have run out of things to say or do.

  • For any reason A'ral or F'dral, one of the Candidatemaster Seconds or Assistants might move you on from an egg.

  • We are NOT limiting how many eggs you can touch, but just assume you will NOT touch them all. So we still suggest you pick your favorites first! ICly, your Candidate likely had time to touch them all if they chose to do so! So get your favorites out of the way early or be satisfied that you might not get to see the egg in the Touching.

  • We will shut this down ICly if things get out of hand, if the gold gets upset, or the eggs get upset. Please, remember, this is a Big Deal for your characters. Even new Candidates will have been told how to behave, what to do, what not to do, and the consequences if they break these rules!

  • Again, nobody leaves the Sands even when they're done Touching the eggs. Just go sit in the tiers and wait. Riders may also sit in the tiers or hang out in the Bowl to socialize or wait for their wards to finish so they can return to High Reaches.

[ candidate kaiator - he/him - HR ]

It was time, then.

As soon as he'd scrambled to get ready, Kaiator had taken great pains to instruct Casris and Usurper to stay out of trouble while he was occupied--the little Brown was the one he wasn't worried about, but that Bronze of his was a different problem entirely. Still, he hoped that Cass could keep him in line at least long enough for Kaiator himself to make it back in time. The added stress of worrying about their antics was the last thing he needed right now.
He entered the Sands with the others, bowing to both Zenobiath and Aresoth as primly and properly as any of them; it certainly wouldn't do to make a bad first impression, after all, particularly when there was so much riding on this one interaction. So long as he didn't wind up on either of their s**t lists for whatever reason, he'd be fine.

There were the eggs, though, laid out before them in their little hollows in the sand like so many half-hidden jewels. Kaiator had to stop for just the briefest moment to take in the sight, doing what he could to commit it to memory--for all he knew, this could be the only one of these things he'd ever do, and he wanted to make sure he'd remember it later. He took a deep breath before continuing on, doing what he could to steel his nerves as he approached the eggs. He was nervous, of course--who wouldn't be? What if he was doing this all wrong? None of those thoughts had much of a place here, however, and Kaiator chased them out of his mind for the time being, keeping a calm mask on to hide any of the slightest tells that might have managed to slip through.
First, he approached the Ding-Dong Bell Egg. It was large, stately almost, and he figured it would be an excellent place to start--located somewhat at the back of the clutch, it would allow him to circle around and interact with plenty of the others.

Should he say something? Probably not out loud, no.
Hello there. he thought to the egg, somewhat haltingly at first. He couldn't say he was terribly used to the idea of mental communication, but he was fairly certain he'd get the hang of it soon enough. I hope you're ready for your big day, here.

Leiheti Her/She

Leiheti knew the drill by now and though she listened to F’ral (who wouldn’t at this point) she didn’t really learn anything new. As she entered she bowed to the Queen and her chosen. It was a deep and respectful bow that she held briefly. This may be a young queen but that meant little really. She was the clutch mother and was due respect.

Slowly Leiheti took in the eggs and moved more on instinct than thought. Let the eggs guide her…or her unconscious whims…one of those. It was the little Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Egg that she stopped at first. “Good day and hello,” she told the egg. Manners had been drilled into her to an alarming degree. “Pleased to meet you. I hope that today goes well for you.”

Divisti Her/She

Her first Touching. Oh, this was wonderful. What would it be like to experience Divisti wondered. It was almost surreal. She had heard stories. But…Anyway. Divisti bowed and moved on quickly to make room for others. Cautiously but with enthusiasm she approached the Caroling Note Egg. What was she supposed to think? Oh, this was surprisingly hard. Ummm…Hello. How are you?

Nuamia Her/She

Nuamia was entirely thrilled to be at High Reaches. Her family was back at Western. They had asked her to not come. But part of her was rebelling against having to stay with them. So she had come and insisted if this was the right clutch for her, she would see it through. With a flourishing bow, she entered the Sands. It was different than Western and a little disorienting at first. She moved to the Elf Stockings Egg and almost reverently placed a hand on it. There was a tiny life in there that was amazing to Nuamia already. “Greetings and good tidings. You are going to make people so happy when you hatch.”

Aroontwa He/Him

Oh my, oh my! It was that time again. Time to make new friends! Aroontwa was so excited. Deep breathing was all that was keeping him from…no, he started bouncing. Well, at least they were small bounces. He couldn’t help it. After waiting for the first crush of people to subside he entered the Sands and bowed. Carefully he approached the Snowman Egg and placed a gentle if trembling hand on it. Hi!

Danzik - Candidatemaster Second, Western

Danzik would tolerate absolutely no steps out of line from Western's candidates. While the greenrider was already known for being strict, she'd pulled her proverbial leash taut and those who had the honor of coming to stand before High Reaches most recent clutch knew what was expected of them. If not from her, from A'ral for certain. She made no move to add her own words onto those of High Reaches' Candidatemaster, though she did pass a glance between the Bronzerider and her own superior cautiously.

Family was complicated, afterall.

But she was there to keep an eye on things - and she was very good at her job.

------

Kinyegele - Female, She/Her

Oh. She'd been so excited! After her small meeting, fleeting as it had been with Zenobiath a few sevendays before, Kinyegele had refocused herself harder than ever. It...had been a task, flitting between excitement, studiousness, and...a not so shallow concern about their Candidatemaster Second. But she wrapped all those feelings up in a nice little bow as she listened intently to F'dral. While she missed Gr'del still, Kinye had told herself she'd do nothing but make the bronzerider who had replaced him proud of her.

She wasn't exactly sure she had even stood out.

But today wasn't a day for silly thoughts like that! It was a day for holding onto F'dral's every word, even if she had done this all once before. She'd hold onto every one as tightly as though she'd never known before and follow it to the letter, Faranth allow! Yes, today was a day to meet the eggs. Perhaps, even, one....no, she'd never put that pressure on. She would come ready to give, not to receive anything.

There was a slight bounce in Kinye's step as she fell into line with the rest of the herd, offering Zenobiath a familiar look before bowing. Before she stepped away, she took a moment to look back towards one of her fellow Candidates - how was Lusialu feeling about this? Did she feel extra pressure when her sister was so closely wrapped in all of these? If she happened to catch the girl's eye, she'd offer a wave, otherwise....it was time to pick an egg to introduce herself to.

Front and center it would be! Lump of Coal Egg would be the first Kinye laid her hand on, making sure her thoughts were all neatly arranged to be warm and inviting. It is going to be a busy day for you - is it alright I came to say hello? She'd been rebuffed before - and she'd not be upset if this little one wanted her to go elsewhere.

-----

Kahbrohm - Male, He/Him

It was time. While he knew better than to push his luck and get on the Candidatemasters' bad sides with his snappy tongue, hearing the same thing he'd heard before all over again didn't sit too well with Kahbrohm. But he did his best to not look as impatient as he felt. It was a time to touch eggs, not flap gums. If he looked about as sneering as usual, well...it almost seemed to be his default expression by now. The boy's ego lead the way, after all.

Listen, Bow to the parents, go. Neither Zenobiath nor Aresoth were particularly special to Kahbrohm. He didn't know the dragons, and he certainly didn't know their riders. Respect for them doing as they did was a bit much to be asked to give, but he'd go through the motions. He didn't dislike them, however. He was just indifferent. They were a dragon, like any other dragon. Just as to them, he was likely a boy just like any other boy. It was going to be a joke on them, however. He was not any other boy.

He was the best damn boy on these Sands.

If he was a little too pushy as he made his first choice, well, he'd not apologize for it. Surely everybody else felt about the same. Still, he was careful to not shove anybody to the ground or sneer. No, he was at least gentle in settling in with any others who were at Starry Night Egg. He didn't make any effort to clean things up in his thoughts for appearances - nice, as much as he could be, but his rough edges were there to be rifled through as desired. Kahbrohm had no secrets. Here I am, ripe for the peeking. You get the special honor of being the first egg I wanted to meet.

------

Dorok - Male, He/Him

Here it was. Dorok had done well to not twist his insides up too tightly before, but now he had to keep himself from doing so with an iron will. No, today he would introduce onto his best side as far as he could help it - and he'd help it if it killed him. He listened intently as they were all instructed, careful to not let his mind wander to feel bored from repeated information he already knew. He was better than that. He was so much better than that. Dorok was a child of High Reaches, and he would make his Weyr proud. He would make his mother proud. He would....wasn't sure if it was possible to make his father proud. The man's presence lingered over him ominously, like he was chained directly to his heart.

He would show his old man. He would become a great dragonrider, and he would lift his siblings from the depths his father had thrown them to. He had to. There were no other options.

With a deep breath, he offered a respectful bow to Zenobiath and Aresoth, holding it perhaps longer than he'd intended to as he grabbed the reigns of his inner turmoil and pulled them tight. It would not wander. He would not allow it. There was no room for it. These little ones would not meet it today. Perhaps none of them would wish to meet it ever. He'd wrap it tightly and put it off to the side. Behind warmer thoughts. Behind kinder thoughts.

Unlike some, however, Dorok would take a minute to survey the clutch, hands on his hips as her observed the others on the sands. Then, with his head held high, he carefully made his way to Red and Green Striped Paper Egg, stroking it gently twice before letting his hand still. Am I the first to say hello? How lucky I must be if so. Do you feel like it is a lucky day?

Candidate Heida -- female,she/her

Heida knew the drill by heart. Still, she listened to F'dral's instructions with all seriousness before solemnly entering the huge cavern of the Hatching Ground and setting foot on the warm sand. With a heart and mind full of reverence, the girl bowed deeply to golden Zenobiath and bronze Aresoth, then approached the eggs. They looked amazing, glittering in the sand. Her eyes swept over them as she studied each one, making her choice for the first egg she would communicate with.

She set her sights on the Starry Night Egg first, with its shell like the night sky. Gently she lay a hand on the egg, a soft smile on her face. "Hello, little one, and welcome," she murmured, sending thoughts of love and joy to the hatchling within. "I hope you're looking forward to meeting your bondmate."

~~~~~~~~~
Candidate Tarroi -- male, he/him
F'dral's instructions were straightforward enough to Tarroi, he'd heard the same or similar a million times in the six Turns he had been here. This time, though, he felt as though there was more riding on the Touching than ever before. Maybe T'nus's lecture the other day really had gotten to him. He didn't want to fail. He wasn't going to fail again this time, he nodded to himself as he stepped on the sands,bowed to the parents, and made his way to the eggs.
The first egg he approached was the Gingerbread Egg. As he had done so many times before, he gently touched the brown shell and sent warm, pleasant thoughts to it. You seem like a nice egg. I know you will hatch into a good dragonet. Maybe even choose me as your lifemate. Tarroi could only hope...
Lelte (HR, She/Her)
It was that time again. Lelte was so excited... to go to see all the lovely eggs, to meet the different personalities... even if there wasn't one for her, it was an awfully fun event.
As the others, she listened politely to the rules which were as ever the same, no matter if it was one's first time standing or their tenth. Still, it was good and right and respectful. So was the following bow to the clutch mother , her rider and the sire. It was polite, and their due. And it was not a hardship to show some manners.
There were plenty of eggs and more candidates... where to start? She looked and pondered and made her way carefully and respectfully over to one of the large eggs (Gingerbread Egg) the front. Making sure to keep all her joy and wonder and positive thoughts at the fore, she reached out a hand to softly place it on the shell. Hey there.
Tandry (HR, He/Him)
The queen had clutched, enough time passed that they were now being led to the sands once more. To show their respect to the queen, her rider and the clutch sire. Listen to the same lecture on expectations, to bow and then move to meet the eggs. Same ritual, different day.
Not that it wasn't exciting, or had become routine, or god forbid, boring. But it was something familiar and at the same time so unique. But he wasn't outgoing or the ray of sunshine his little sister was. He preferred to keep his emotions a little closer to the vest, shown to a chosen few versus the world at large.
His turn came, he showed the proper respect to those who it was due and walked deliberately onto the sands. Walking carefully through the eggs, careful not to bump them or the other candidates to start near the back. Not quite in the way back, a small egg caught his eye. He had not made some list or plan of where to start or where to go, figuring it would be best if he simply let his instinct guide him. Such action had served him well in the past, first as a caravan leader, then later on when he had been invited to the Weyr to Stand for the Magic Clutch....
Even if he hadn't yet met his match, if indeed there was one for him, he could still say each time was an adventure in itself and he was greatful for that.
Keeping those thoughts and feelings in mind, he reached out to the small Holly Egg. Greetings little one. This is a big day for all of us. I hope all goes well for you.
[ Candidate Solameya - HRW - She/Her ]
Solameya was well aware of the drill and was keen on getting the ball rolling. This was exciting and important. The woman rolled her shoulders and sighed before she bowed to the observing then moved toward the clutch. She circled for a moment, and approached the Starry Night Egg, laying her hand on the surface. 'Hello, in there. Looking forward to making your way in the world?'
[ candidate alisaide - they/he - HR ]
The barracks had been abuzz since the eggs had been laid, and Alisaide had been about ready to vibrate into the sun with the sheer amount of excitement they were currently bottling up. This was it! Their first Touching! It hardly seemed real, almost feeling more like a dream than anything else--when they made it to the Sands, they couldn't help but bounce just slightly in place through F'dral's speech, paying him rapt attention despite their abundant anticipation. As soon as they were let loose, so to speak, Alisaide gave the parents their properly owed bow, filing out into the clutch's general area with everyone else.
The Snowman Egg caught their eye first, and they were more than happy to follow their interest to the egg's side. Barely able to keep themself from grinning, Alisaide laid their hand on the shell, momentarily marveling at the feel of it under their fingers.
Hello! Are you excited about all this? They hoped they weren't coming on too strong--with any luck, their enthusiasm would be received at least pleasantly. You're in a lovely spot, all tucked in right in the middle like you are. It's really quite lucky!
T'nus, Candidatemaster Second - High Reaches Weyr
Oh, how soon it had happened. Ridiculously soon actually and T'nus was glad they'd had the conversation a few months prior about plans and what have you. That conversation resulted in a few more open and aware eyes, or so he hoped, and he took his position to watch the candidates fan out onto the Sands. Western had been allowed to join, much to Minimuth's (constant) chagrin about rules and what have, but the rider himself was rather mum in opinion.
Family stuff and all. Not quite his cup of klah to butt in over and he made certain that Minimuth didn't attempt to tail his way in either. Today was about the eggs and about the candidates - in that order. He was certain they'd all make him proud in their behaviors and perhaps even show themselves off a bit to the Western candidates; High Reaches was superior after all, even if just a little.
It's what he wanted to believe and thus it would be true. They would all behave perfectly.
Haveli - she/her - HR
Haveli needed to do more than just go through the motions this time. She needed to do them with the right mindsight, with the right outlook on what was coming. She needed to believe in what was ahead of her even as the hot sands started to burn at her feet and a small back part of her mind remembered the last time she was out here. No, stillness. She needed stillness and quiet, just remember everything that had been pounded into her skull the past few months.
It needed to be believed as more than just words if she was going to succeed, if she was going to stay and live here like she knew she actually wanted to. A bow was given to the Queen and her mate, to the riders, as Haveli followed the steps. Bow, respect - an empty mind only open for welcoming thoughts and love. Her own ego needed to be left behind before the sands, along with whatever bitterness she might want to carry.
Too much time, too much effort, had been put into her, and she took a deep breath of hot air before moving towards an egg. Eyes on no one else, only on the small lives that were being created before her, Haveli paused before the Blue Ornament Egg and placed a soft hand on the shell. All thoughts of everything before were gone, or at least as much as she could manage. No bitterness, no spite. No prickly Haveli that she knew would return before too long. For now, just stillness and quiet.
Hello there. She leaned a little in with her feelings, but not enough to be an actual push or force. Just a true hello. I'm here....to meet you.
Tuelarua - High Reaches - She/Her - Touching Snowflake Egg
The day had finally arrived. Ever since the great gold Zenobiath had flown, Tuelarua had been excited to see how her children had looked. The candidate adored baby dragons and their shells alike, loving how different the colors and patterns could look, how the color of the shells were an absolute mystery to the baby that lay within. Her experiences at the double touching and hatching had only helped to nest a love for the young dragons, so when Zenobiath had laid her eggs, Tuela was practically on her toe tips in eagerness for when candidates would be allowed onto the sands to properly introduce themselves to the next wave of dragons to grace the Weyr.
The fact that she was growing ever closer to aging out was but a blip on her mind. That didn’t matter, not if she was able to gain another glimpse at gleaming shells to fill her sketchbook, captured by watercolors.
Listening to F’dral, the small candidate knew she, as many others, wouldn’t have much give to interactions. This was what they had been trained for, after all. Taught, studied, warned about. This day wasn’t about candidates, but the beautiful shells at the center of the hatching sands.
The scope of the hatching sands was immense, though she couldn’t take more than a brief moment to take in the large arena as they entered en mass. Tuelarua bowed once to Zenobiath -- then once again to Aresoth, before her eyes flit across the beautiful clutch at the center of the pair. Oh, stunning, beautiful -- words came to mind that she had to hush down. Where was she to start? Yet as she strolled carefully up to the Snowflake Egg, she smiled at the medium-sized egg. Her hand gently caressed the light colored shell, her eyes drawn to the gentle patterns down the smooth surface. Hello, little one. It’s so nice to meet you and your siblings today.
Candidate Rhys - He/Him - HR
Oh, he was anxious as anything. Another touching, this one after his Sister had Impressed Her Saevath. While they were waiting to enter the Sands, Rhys took his time to get his head in order. It wouldn't do to have his mind on anything but the eggs. The studious blonde took a deep breath, listening carefully to the lecture given, and then once on the sands? Offered both parents a sweeping bow. Then it was time. Her clutch was beautiful, such strange and lovely eggs. It took a moment before the boy could choose which egg he would approach, but after careful consideration?
Rhys made his way over to the Lump of Coal Egg, resting his hands on the small shell, Hello there, little one. I hope you're doing well. Your mother is so kind to let us meet you.
Candidate Brenva - She/Her - HR
This was certainly different from Nabol. Certainly different from the world she'd known before this. It had taken some time for her to tuck the emotions away, to compartmentalize in to a blank mind so that the Hatchlings would have nothing to upset them. She listened to their Candidatemaster with quiet, but after a moment? It was time. Bowing to the clutchparents and riders, she turned and made her way to the eggs. It took a moment of flitting around them before she settled at the Snowflake Egg, gently setting her hand on it and offering a warm greeting.
Candidate Eyriean - They/Them - HR
Were they really going to be worth the time of the eggs? Eyriean was anxious, unsure of themselves. They weren't exactly in the norm, not male, not female. They were just...Them. A Tanner from Bitra. Taking a shaking breath, the candidate bowed to the Clutchparents and the Riders. Faranth, but they were massive. They took a minute to look over the clutch, to study the eggs, before at last deciding to go to the String of Lights Egg, clearing their mind as best they could before offering a very quiet, "Hello."
Dehka - he/him
The spark of excitement inside him couldn't be stifled, not even with the seriousness of F'dral's words. Dehka kept his tongue still, though he did offer a bright smile for the people he knew before be turned and headed off with the others. Zenobiath and Aresoth were resplendent in the light, and even now, Dehka couldn't help but feel thrilled at his luck. He bowed to them both, mentally thanking the pair before he surveyed the clutch with wide, admiring eyes.
He reached out and pressed his palm against the Christmas Tree Egg. Hello! I'm so glad I get to meet you. These dragonets would do wonderful things, just like their parents, aunts, and uncles had!
--
Chakuri - she/her
Her heart beat so quickly she feared it might escape her chest, and the girl focused on her breathing. Her normally cheerful face was serious today, and she nodded time and again to F'dral's words. This was it. This was what she'd been dreaming of.... and now that the day had finally arrived, Chakuri could admit that she was a little scared. No relying on anyone's help now. She would do this on her own--she would!
Swallowing to herself, Chakuri made a clumsy sort of bow for the queen and her bronze mate before turning her eyes on the eggs. She'd never expected to see so many beautiful colors! The String of Lights egg was particularly fetching, and Chakuri reached out to gently touch the shell. Hi! You're going to meet so many people today... She wondered if it was overwhelming, being suddenly introduced to countless folk.
--
Liniyah -she/her
Everyone was going to be on edge today, whether from excitement or nerves.... She understood the feeling all too well... but this day wasn't about them. The eggs deserved all the attention, and she was more than happy to oblige. Drifting through the other scattered bodies, she paused to stroke her fingers against the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer shell. It was by itself so far and she wanted to make sure it didn't feel left out.
-
Lauthisen - he/him
Lauthisen had no intention of being the candidate from Western who screwed everything up, listening to the instructions with an impassive silence. He'd done this enough times that he knew the rules and expectations... and had little tolerance for those who didn't. Once released, he moved at a self-assured pace, bowing to the clutch parents before he approached his first egg.
His pale fingers lightly pressed against the Elf's Stocking egg, and he sent it a quiet greeting.
--
Oranie - she/her
Sometimes, it was hard to believe that this was actually happening. Oranie's thoughts whirled as she stood with the rest of the candidates, reaching out to give Elibrie's hand a squeeze. Had she condemned her sister to be ostracized and abandoned by their family like Aunt Nadry? Could Elibrie had found a good, loving husband if she hadn't come? She reluctantly released her sister's hand, unconsciously sweeping into an elegant curtsey before the enormous dragons.
As hard as it was for her, she knew Elibrie had made her own decision.... but she so knew that she was partially responsible for it, leaping on the prospect as she had. Maybe a dragon wouldn't want either of them, and they could leave. The thought of going back to her marriage was enough to make her stomach roll, and Oranie fiercely stamped that thought down even as she reached out curiously for one of the smaller eggs. The Blue Ornament egg was rather fetching, and she sent a tentative, if warm greeting to the occupant.
Elibrie - she/her
Elibrie was nervous, but doing her very best to keep it under control. Though she'd not been at the Weyr long, she had taken every lesson and rule to heart, and would follow them to the best of her abilities. While she couldn't make herself not nervous at all, she could keep it tamped down and not afflict the little babies in the eggs with it. She'd been told to expect them to do some rifling around, however, and they'd surely be able to see it if they did, but hopefully they wouldn't find it offensive or distressing. How could anyone not have any flitters in their stomach about all this, especially the first time?
The squeeze of her hand from her sister was a reassurance, and she responded to it in kind, and with a small smile. If Oranie could do this, then so could she! She was a bit torn when facing the clutchparents - they'd been instructed to bow, but Oranie had curtsied. So which should she do?? For Elibrie, it was quite a conflict to decide! Ultimately, her follower's nature and reliance on her older sister won out, and she executed the same elegant gesture. Surely, if it hadn't been alright to do, Oranie wouldn't have done it!
With no guidance on where to start, and a touch overwhelmed by all the choices, she too went to the Blue Ornament egg and placed her hand on it. H...hello?
