Origin of Name: From Sauza, a popular brand of Tequila - which is used in the making of margaritas.

Inspiration: Margarita

A margarita is a cocktail consisting of tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice often served with salt on the rim of the glass. The drink is served shaken with ice (on the rocks), blended with ice (frozen margarita), or without ice (straight up). Although it has become acceptable to serve a margarita in a wide variety of glass types, ranging from cocktail and wine glasses to pint glasses and even large schooners, the drink is traditionally served in the eponymous margarita glass, a stepped-diameter variant of a cocktail glass or champagne coupe.

According to cocktail historian David Wondrich, the margarita is merely a popular Mexican and American drink, the Daisy (margarita is Spanish for "daisy" ), remade with tequila instead of brandy, which became popular during Prohibition as people drifted over the border for alcohol. There is an account from 1936 of Iowa newspaper editor James Graham finding such a cocktail in Tijuana, years before any of the other margarita "creation myths".

1937 Cafe Royal Cocktail Book contains a recipe for a Picador using the same concentrations of tequila, triple sec and lime juice as a margarita. One of the earliest stories is of the margarita being invented in 1938 by Carlos "Danny" Herrera at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria, halfway between Tijuana and Rosarito, Baja California, created for customer and former Ziegfeld dancer Marjorie King, who was allergic to many spirits, but not to tequila. This story was related by Herrera and also by bartender Albert Hernandez, acknowledged for popularizing a margarita in San Diego after 1947, at the La Plaza restaurant in La Jolla.

There are also claims that the margarita was first mixed in Juárez, Chihuahua at Tommy's Place Bar on July 4, 1942 by Francisco "Pancho" Morales. Morales later left bartending in Mexico to become a US citizen, where he worked as a milkman for 25 years. Mexico's official news agency Notimex and many experts have said Morales has the strongest claim to having invented the margarita.

Others say the inventor was Dallas socialite Margarita Sames, when she concocted the drink for her guests at her Acapulco, Guerrero vacation home in 1948. Tommy Hilton reportedly attended, bringing the drink back to the Hilton chain of hotels. However, Jose Cuervo was already running ad campaigns for the margarita three years earlier, in 1945, with the slogan, "Margarita: It's more than a girl's name." According to Jose Cuervo, the cocktail was invented in 1938 by a bartender in honor of Mexican showgirl Rita de la Rosa.

Another common origin tale begins the cocktail's history at the legendary Balinese Room in Galveston, Texas where, in 1948, head bartender Santos Cruz created the margarita for singer Peggy (Margaret) Lee. He supposedly named it after the Spanish version of her name, Margarita.

The first known publication of a margarita recipe was in the December 1953 issue of Esquire, with a recipe calling for an ounce of tequila, a dash of triple sec and the juice of half a lime or lemon. A recipe for a tequila-based cocktail first appeared in the 1930 book My New Cocktail Book by G.F. Steele. Without noting a specific recipe or inventor, a drink called the Tequila Daisy was mentioned in the Syracuse Herald as early as 1936. Margarita is Spanish for Daisy, which is a nickname for Margaret.

A later, certainly false, story is that the margarita was invented in October 1961, at a party in Houston, Texas, by party goer Robert James "Rusty" Thomson while acting as bartender. He concocted a mixture of equal parts tequila, Controy orange liqueur, lime, and crushed ice in a salt-rimmed glass. However, Thomson's recipe was made with Damiana Liqueur, not Cointreau orange liqueur. It is said that the idea was an experiment after running out of rum while making frozen daiquiris.

Personality: Come here and let Sauzath take a closer look at you. Yes, you! A party girl who adored being the center of attention, Sauzath knows how to get her way. She also knows what and who she likes, and makes no bones about it. If Sauzath is interested, you'll know. As far as she's concerned, there's nothing shameful in expressing her intentions as clearly as possible. If someone says no, so what? She's onto the next playmate. Life's a party, and everyone's invited!

Especially anyone just as inclined toward good times as Sauzath. Don't assume that she's always looking for a Flight partner, either, for cuddles are just as good and welcomed by this lady. She wants, no, needs to be the object of others' desire, and becomes quite petulant if she's not currently getting any attention. That said, she does have some rigid standards of attractiveness. If you don't meet those set standards, good luck getting her to give you the time of day.

She has grown quite adept in wrapping dragons around her littlest claw, and can be quite manipulative if the situation calls for it. Any objections made will be met with what seem like reasonable responses, guiding the other party to the resolution that Sauzath wants. Note that it will be something that benefits her, but she's perfectly capable of keeping the interests of others in mind too... if not at hearts. She's bright but uses her intelligence to her own selfish ends most of the time. But does anyone really mind?

Truth be told, she enjoys being able to lead from behind the scenes. Although fully capable of succeeding on her own laurels, she would much rather play those around her like so many chess pieces. A little nudge here, a little suggestion there... well, everything will work out just splendidly. That such traits are not well admired in a green does not trouble her at all. It just means that she needn't worry overly much about anyone suspecting her in the first place. Truth be told, she does get herself in trouble from time to time, but it hasn't quite caught up with her yet.

Positive Traits: Flirtatious, outspoken, playful
Negative Traits: Salacious, thirsty, shallow

Egg: A small purple and teal swirl egg.

Adult Size: 20'
Physical Attributes: A small but not tiny green, Sauzath is a great beauty. If you ask her, she's a famed beauty. She has an exquisite tail, and lovely wings, but don't let that detract you from a face that could launch ships.

Additional Notes: This green is going to be up in the air every three months like clockwork. That is, if she doesn't chase in a Flight herself! She very well might. Although she has no gender preference, she does have certain standards of physical beauty that she expects any potential mate to fit. If they don't, well... good luck getting a second glance.

Impression Effect: Although her family might think her a mere snit of a girl, no one else will ever look at her that way ever again. Although, many could be forgiven for wanting to look longer than is polite, for Impression suits Niviora very well indeed. +20 charisma.

Why Me? Niviora is Sauzath's equal match, fully able to go toe to toe with her, and trained in the art of manipulation herself. Whether or not her bondmate admits it, Sauzath knows full well that courtesans are expected to be able to shift and change at a moment's notice, and all on the whims of others. Well, no longer - she will be moving to her own whims, and only her own whims. Unless of course one counts Sauzath's, for the green is certainly charming enough to pull it off. Niviora need never fear being left behind ever again, for Sauzath is and always will be Hers.

Origin of Name: From Trieste, where prosecco was first created. Prosecco is used, long with white peach puree, to create bellinis.

Inspiration: Bellini

A Bellini is a cocktail made with Prosecco and peach purée or nectar. It originated in Venice, Italy.

The Bellini was invented sometime between 1934 and 1948 by Giuseppe Cipriani, founder of Harry's Bar in Venice, Italy. He named the drink the Bellini because its unique pink color reminded him of the toga of a saint in a painting by 15th-century Venetian artist Giovanni Bellini.

The drink started as a seasonal specialty at Harry's Bar. Later, it also became popular at the bar's New York counterpart. After an entrepreneurial Frenchman set up a business to ship fresh white peach purée to both locations, it became a year-round favorite.

The Bellini is an IBA Official Cocktail. They also suggest a Puccini, replacing the peach purée with an equal amount of mandarin juice; a Rossini, which uses strawberry purée; or a Tintoretto, which is made with pomegranate juice.

The Bellini consists of puréed white peaches and Prosecco, an Italian sparkling wine. Marinating fresh peaches in wine is an Italian tradition. The original recipe was made with a bit of raspberry or cherry juice to give the drink a pink glow. Due in part to the limited availability of both white peaches and Prosecco, several variations exist.

California produces a white peach that works well, and yellow peaches or peach nectar can be substituted, especially if peaches are out of season and the flavor would be very bland. Other fruits or even flavoured liqueurs (peach schnapps, for example) are sometimes substituted for the peach purée.
The Cipriani family produces Bellini Base for the signature cocktail of the Harry's Bar restaurants.

Other sparkling wines are commonly used in place of Prosecco, though richly flavored French champagne does not pair well with the light, fruity flavor of the Bellini. For a non-alcoholic version, sparkling juice or seltzer is used in place of the wine.

The Cuban Adalor cocktail is a drink calling for fresh peach smashed with a fork and topped with Champagne. It was published in a Cuban drink guide book in 1927. The Adalor cup is a similar punch drink made with "melocoton" from the 1930 book Manual Oficial of the Club De Cantineros from Cuba. Melocoton is a peach grafted on a quince rootstock.

Personality: Loving Triesteth has endless pools of affection to dole upon others. Anyone and everyone who is sad need only turn to Triesteth, who will graciously take them into her tender embrace and listen to their every woe. She is supremely caring, and wants nothing more than to adore upon anyone who makes the dubious choice to approach. Yet although her love may at times be cloying and one might even say suffocating, Triesteth is truly trying. She wants so badly to be able to make everyone she can happy. For why shouldn't they be, when they are a gift to Pern?

If they can't see it, then certainly Triesteth can. With a strong inclination to overlooking others' faults, she is in very real danger of being taken advantage of. It's not that she's gullible, though she is that, it's that she wants to believe the best of absolutely everyone. If someone were to betray her trust, she just simply would not understand. She's not particularly bright, however affectionate, and can't quite tell when she's being used. Were she to take up a ledgemate only for the other to seek out a prettier or more vivacious friend, Triesteth would surely assume that such was her due.

The worst part of it is that she knows she's not awfully bright, but she tries so hard. Perhaps too hard, when it comes right down to it. Effortlessly gracious, Triesteth cannot tell a lie. Nor is it wise, indeed, to confide a secret in her, for she will just as easily tell it as a gossip might. It's not that she's trying to confess what another might wish hidden, it's that she cares so much, and only wants what's best for them. Her clumsy efforts to rectify a wrong will surely only snowball into disaster. A bit of a mess, she nevertheless carries on in good humor with seemingly endless reserves of patience and kindness.

Triesteth possesses an undercurrent of quiet determination that guides her every move in life. She is capable of suffering in silence, and will take onto herself more than her small shoulders can carry. For indeed, she would rather bear it than foist it upon another. Her caring nature manifests itself significantly when she sees another in pain. Try though she might to respect boundaries, if there is someone in need, she will want to do something about it. This noble cause will be sought after and followed all throughout her life, lending it a higher purpose than one might assume from such humble origins. She is more capable than even she knows, although time will tell in what form such capability manifests.

Positive Traits: Guileless, warmhearted, gentle
Negative Traits: Naïve, vacuous, smothering

Egg: A small rose egg.

Adult Size: 22'
Physical Attributes: A very round green, Triesteth is a sweet and tender creature with doe eyes. Although she doesn't look it, she's exceptionally quick in the air.

Additional Notes: Darling Triesteth is yearning for the romance of all romances. She would love nothing more than to be someone's one and only, but it hasn't occurred to her just yet that she could put herself forward for consideration. If she has been noticed, she probably hasn't noticed the noticing, or assumes that the attention is for someone other than herself.

During her Hatching, Triesteth acquired a permanent injury to her left wing that never quite healed up properly. Although she can still fly, she does struggle during longer drills and when making sharp turns. This will need to be carefully tended and monitored by her rider.

Impression Effect: Upon Impression, any lingering pain Rasthell might feel regarding the terrible betrayal of D'zol will be wiped clean away. He will forever after possess a confidence buoyed by the bulwark that is Triesteth's tender loving care. Never again need he fear being alone or unloved.

Why Me? Rasthell was perfect for Triesteth from the get-go, possessing the qualities that she needed in a friend, as well as the all-important quality of needing her. He was once as sweetly naïve as she, and perhaps can lend some wisdom to the little green, who doesn't quite know what she's getting herself into. He has been there and done that, carrying the scars of his experiences with him in life. But no more shall he be alone in carrying those burdens, for Triesteth can and will carry them alongside him. She loves him with all of her dear hearts, and will envelop him in the most pure love of all - that of a dragon for her rider. Never again shall another be able to hurt Rasthell so totally as D'zol once did, for his heart will have one true and loyal champion for ever and always. In her turn, Triesteth will lean upon Rasthell during those times of hardship, when she also needs a friend and boon companion. They are each other's perfect matches. What more need be said?

Rasthell (Uta)

White Quinineth

Origin of Name: From quinine, an old medication once used for the treatment of malaria. Gin and tonic was created as a means by which to make the stuff palatable.

Inspiration: Gin and Tonic

A gin and tonic is a highball cocktail made with gin and tonic water poured over a large amount of ice. The ratio of gin to tonic varies according to taste, strength of the gin, other drink mixers being added, etc., with most recipes calling for between a 1:1 to 1:3 ratio. It is usually garnished with a slice or wedge of lime. To preserve effervescence, the tonic can be poured down a bar spoon. The ice cools the gin, dulling the effect of the alcohol in the mouth and making the drink more pleasant to taste.

In some countries (e.g. UK), gin and tonic is also marketed pre-mixed in single-serving cans. In the United States, most bars use "soda out of a gun that in no way, shape, or form resembles quinine water", according to bartender Dale DeGroff. To get a real gin and tonic, DeGroff recommends specifying bottled tonic. Alternatively, one can add tonic syrup to soda water.

Gin and tonic made with Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin and Schweppes Indian Tonic, garnished with slices of lime.
It is commonly referred to as a "G and T" in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. In some parts of the world, it is called a "gin tonic" (e.g. in Germany, Italy, France, Japan ( ジン・トニック, phonetically "jin tonikku" ), the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey).

Gin and tonic is traditionally garnished with a slice or wedge of lime, often slightly squeezed into the drink before being placed in the glass. In most parts of the world lime remains the only usual garnish; however, lemon is often used as an alternative fruit. In the United Kingdom, the use of both lemon and lime together is known as an "Evans". Although the origins of the use of lemons are unknown, their use dates back at least as far as the late 1930s. In addition lemons are often more readily available, and cheaper to purchase, than limes. The use of lemon or lime is a debated issue – some leading brands, such as Gordon's, Tanqueray, and Bombay Sapphire, recommend the use of lime in their gin.

The cocktail was introduced by the army of the British East India Company in India. In India and other tropical regions, malaria was a persistent problem. In the 1700s Scottish doctor George Cleghorn studied how quinine, a traditional cure for malaria, could be used to prevent the disease. The quinine was drunk in tonic water, however the bitter taste was unpleasant. British officers in India in the early 19th century took to adding a mixture of water, sugar, lime and gin to the quinine in order to make the drink more palatable, thus gin and tonic was born. Soldiers in India were already given a gin ration, and the sweet concoction made sense. Since it is no longer used as an antimalarial, tonic water today contains much less quinine, is usually sweetened, and is consequently much less bitter.

Gin and tonic is a popular cocktail during the summer. A 2004 study found that after 12 hours, "considerable quantities (500 to 1,000 ml) of tonic water may, for a short period of time, lead to quinine plasma levels at the lower limit of therapeutic efficacy and may, in fact, cause transitory suppression of parasites". This method of consumption of quinine was impractical for malaria prophylaxis, as the amount of drug needed "can not be maintained with even large amounts of tonic". The authors conclude that it is not an effective form of treatment for malaria.

Personality: Oh dear, did Quinineth offend you? Why, he certainly meant nothing by it, of course. Please don't mistake him, he was being quite sincere, but in the most genteel manner imaginable. Surely this is all just a misunderstanding! It will be terribly difficult for Quinineth when he puts his foot in it, and he will, because he's very to the point for being so formal and mannerly. It's just that he couldn't bear if anyone thought that he wasn't being genuine. He means well, he truly does, it's just that sometimes a well meaning word goes awry... and it's Quinineth to blame, of course. He does take such faux paus ever so seriously, and will punish himself quite thoroughly if he steps a foot out of line.

He is painfully honorable, to a fault. It's not that he means to be so buttoned up, it's just the way he is. He'll always volunteer himself for any duty that comes his way, and his future Wingleader need never fear that they'll be without eager tribute, for Quinineth is the embodiment of that very thing. The white dragon considers it one of the most important things in the world to do his duty, and to do it well. Performing admirably is his life's purpose. That leaves him with little time for the type of socialization he might prefer, if only he had the chance. For indeed he does adore the finer things in life... parties among them.

It is quite impossible, however, to fulfill one's destiny while luxuriating in everything that Pern has to offer, so Quinineth will suffer the afflicted life of a true nonpareil... outside of the limelight. By doing so, he can assure himself that whenever anyone needs him, he will be there. It does impede his social life, and truly, he does grieve at that, but one must make sacrifices! For Queens and Western! And doing all of that is ever so exhausting for the poor dear, so if he pushes himself beyond his limits it will be up to his rider to rein him back in. As kindly as his actions are meant, he can be overbearing and interfering at the best of times, bless him. At the worst, well... let's just say that there are reasons why dragons are able to go between. Quinineth might just be one of them.

Although he struggles to let loose, Quinineth nevertheless does enjoy the company of others. He is happiest when surrounded by his closest friends, and bless those enduring souls who can tolerate his interference! Those who do let Quinineth in will find him the truest of friends, and for all that he tends to give everything he has, he won't expect that behavior from anyone but himself. In his hearts, he would love nothing more than to be valued for the peculiar little creature that he is. Perhaps loved, even, though he knows it to be a tall order indeed.

Positive Traits: Driven, empathetic, selfless
Negative Traits: Interfering, self-sacrificing, pompous

Egg: Large black and rainbow swirl egg.

Adult Size: 14'
Physical Attributes: This tiny white has BIG wings! Yes, huuuge. So big. In fact, they make up more than half of his size. ... Admittedly, his size is pretty smol.

Additional Notes: Quinineth is more than usually interested in helping and healing others. While he is not personally capable of healing, he is good at listening and trying to cheer others up as he goes along. Quite a long flame for such a very small derg.

Impression Effect: Manners maketh man. Or in this case, woman. Although Etansi had quite a wild life in the past, Quinineth will smooth out all of her rough edges, lending her a refinement than a Lady Holder might envy. She knows instinctively how to respond to any given social situation, and with aplomb! The addition of +10 charisma to boot is merely a side effect of being in the constant presence of such a beauty, no doubt.

Why Me? Etansi reached into Quinineth's hearts and found herself mirrored within them. For all her fierce protectiveness, Etansi has never truly had anyone to take care of her. That will end now, as Erastan can surely rest easy knowing that she is in the best of claws. Etansi will find herself moving much more easily through Weyr life. For Quinineth knows all of the proper protocols by hearts, and is more than happy to guide her through each and every one of them. Ah, but Quinineth does need Etansi powerfully - were it not for her, he would dash himself to pieces trying to be anything and everything to everyone. They augment each other's strengths, and deepen one another's depths. But the best of all is that now Etansi can truly say that she belongs in Western Weyr, and shall always have a home there.

Etansi (Hattaki)
