The afternoon was blisteringly hot and there was very little shade to be found on the open plains as the sun beat down upon the long golden colored grass. The stalks swayed a bit as something, about the size of a very small dog, wove it's way through the tall grass. It seemed to stop before a small half flutter stallion burst up through the grass, looked around and then returned to the ground to keep walking.
It wasn't the most efficient way to travel, but being beneath the grass offered some protection from the sun and while he could fly, that burned a lot of energy as opposed to just walking at reduced size and as the stallions stomach growled he wasn't going to be able to keep this up much longer and the tall grass around him didn't offer much in the way of nutrition.
He hung his head and sighed. If only he hadn't gotten such a late start this morning but he'd been a hit at his engagement last night and had stayed up far past midnight and had overslept. He'd skipped breakfast in his rush to get on the trail as he now had a lot of ground to make up if he was going to make the meet up with his friends in a day and a half.
"Stupid, stupid, stupid." he muttered to himself and then stopped head lifting as a breeze drifted by. There was the distinct smell of water and the stallion let out a breath. If there was water there would be more palatable grass or if nothing else water plants. A quick recharge and he could fly for a bit to make up some time. Finally, some good luck. He quickly reverted to full size and headed off in the direction of the water.
