After watching a few others make their attempts, Prulienth felt ready to try again. If she had thought that her first try was a struggle to get into the air, her previous confidence boost deflated as she tried and tried to become airborne. With much working of her wings, she finally managed to get liftoff. Her muscled ached, but she did it. Hers sent waves of encouragement and feelings of pride, but oof, did she feel less than stellar.

When it came time to land, it also went similarly to her first attempt...only worse. A bit of a long landing had worked out the first time, but whether it was just coming in to a skidding landing on a different area or her tired, aching muscles just gave out on her, Prulienth skid, lost her footing, and landed in a heap. She couldn't tell which hurt worse, her muscles or her pride. She'd done pretty okay on her first attempt and this had been so bad!

'Hey, now...' Came Solameya's voice, upon seeing the developing sulk that was settling over her bondmate. 'You're okay, love. Remember that this is just day one. It's okay to be disappointed, but don't you even think about giving up! You are working so hard and I am so, so proud of you, Prulienth. Take a minute or two to shake it off, take a breather, then how about we give it one more shot, huh?'

Giving a soft rumble, the green sat for a moment to collect herself. 'After all of this, can we go for a bath? I feel icky and my muscles hurt.'

Solly smiled up at her dragon, rubbing a hand along the green's hide. 'Of course we can! A good, thorough bath would probably do wonders for helping you get to feeling better.'

Quote:
6-10: It's difficult to get off of the ground to begin with. This requires a lot more muscle strength than you were prepared for, and by the time you're airborne, you are already pretty tired.

3: Nope, this was a bad idea, and you skid gracelessly along the ground into a heap. Shards.

Kesucianth had, of course, been dutiful about preparing for this day, and Elibrie in aiding him however necessary. He'd be doing most of the actual work today, obviously, while she was there for guidance and moral support. Neither was jittery, nor were either particularly excited - not that they weren't looking forward to it, but they were quite calm and deliberate, approaching it as they did all the rest of their training.

Even as inclined to fretting as she could be, Elibrie really wasn't concerned; they'd been careful and thorough in all their preparations, and she trusted her bonded completely. Even if things didn't go perfectly, it would surely still be fine. After Kesucianth had finished his stretches and his turn arrived, she planted a kiss on his nose and stood back to give him space, smiling proudly at her most beloved. Yes, everything would be fine, she just knew it.

After responding to the smooch with a boop and a wave of love, Kesucianth set about the business of getting off the ground...which was not quite as easy as the older, more practiced dragons made it look. He still managed it without incident, but it took much more out of him than he anticipated. But he was flying! He bathed His in the feeling of it, and caught a thermal that took him up, up...and up!

Oh, dear. How...did he get back down from this high up?

You can do it. Just keep calm and remember our lessons. Ask Dhremorath if you need to.

No, I remember. I think if I...

He did, eventually, make it back to the ground. It was perhaps not the prettiest of landings, and he was very tired, but it could have been worse.

R'ul stood confidently behind Ignaviath as they waited their turn to have the brown take to the skies. Ignaviath, for his part, was not looking up at his siblings and their sand siblings, much more interested with fussing with a talon that was a bit ragged. He had expressed his disinterest in this exercise this morning but R'ul had promised him a bit of extra pampering after the fact if he did well.

"Right, your turn," R'ul said, giving the brown a nudge. Ignaviath turned his head upward and heaved a sigh but he did get up on his feet, stretching out his wings a bit to get them ready to go.

"Go on, show them how it's done."

Ignaviath glanced behind him at R'ul who looked far too giddy for something as silly this, but the desire to make His proud stirred his momentum enough to keep any snide remarks to himself. A few strong but slow beats of his wings and a half-enthused jump had him in the air, a bit wobbly but steady as he rose.

How many ways could this possibly go wrong? You've managed to throw yourself completely off course, and honestly, any solution right now seems like a good one.

He was in the air all right, but Ignaviath as already losing interest. Despite R'ul's encouragement from the ground he didn't bother at all with keeping his place in the sky, letting the wind blow him this way and that. A sharp word from R'ul made Ignaviath snap to attention just in time to realize he was in a spot of trouble.

Quote:
Don't look now, but there's an unaffiliated dragon right in your flight path. You weren't expecting them, and they are way too close for you to move aside. At the last second, they go between and you're left scrambling as you fly right toward a tree - shaff!

Some blue dragon was right in his path! Or rather, Ignaviath had drifted into the other dragon's way. He was too startled to do anything, even when the blue jumped Between, but it didn't really matter since there was a big tree directly behind him. Ignaviath gave a little trumpet of surprise and beat his wings harder, barely rising above the top of the obstacle. A few of the branches scraped his legs and stung a bit, leaving him annoyed.

Once he'd landed from his first attempt, Elibrie had wasted no time in covering Kesucianth's face with kisses, and he had crooned and thrummed to receive such attentions. He was more than happy to bathe in the affection and pride, and all the sweet words His had for him. Tired though he was, by the time his turn came again, we felt much refreshed.

This time, he took off with no trouble at all, and managed to avoid flying too high again, but then a strong gust of wind blew him off-course! Although 'gust' was putting it mildly, as that implied it was brief! No, it kept right at him, and he ended up 'landing' in the lake. It least it was still...sort of a landing? He hadn't crashed into anything, at least.

He paddled back to shore, where Elibrie had rushed to meet him - and insisted on hugging his head in soite of his concerns that she would get wet. It wasn't as though it was any worse than bathtime. She looked him over, bit as he'd assured her, he was no worse for wear, and not even his pride was hurt. He was still learning, and there was no shame in that.

For a few moments, at least, it really felt like the third time would be the charm! Alas, he was blown off-course again, farther this time than before, and suddenly...there was another dragon, one he didn't recognize, right in front of him! Where had they even come from?! Kesucianth hwenked in alarm, backwinging to try to stop himself from colliding with the stranger. Just in time, the other dragon disappeared Between...but now he was on a collision course with a tree instead.

He twisted and veered, and though he avoided hitting it head-on, he felt it scrape painfully along his wing. He would probably need that looked at later, though His would do her best to cure it with kisses in the meantime.

All in all...it could have been better, but it could also have been worse.

Ignaviath's return and landing weren't anything to write home about but it wasn't terrible, either. R'ul took that as a good sign and fussed over the put-out brown, checking to make sure he hadn't sustained any damage from the close encounter with the tree.

"Pay more attention this time," he chided, smoothing his hand down Ignaviath's nose. The dragon looked at R'ul with dull eyes that swirled between yellow and red, irritated at having to work and the light stinging coming from his hind legs.

Must I do it again? Once is enough, don't you think? I'm tired, he complained, lifting his wings limply as if to demonstrate they were all done working for the day. R'ul shook his head, though, and gave Ignaviath a few more strokes down his muzzle.

"A few more times. If you learn to glide flying isn't so hard. You can ride the thermals all day and never beat your wings once. But to do that you have to get up into the air first. And be able to safely land." Ignaviath muttered something about not having to land if he didn't ever take off, but some more cuddling and nudging found him in the air once more.

Again, after he was airborne, Ignaviath lost interest in what he was doing. He spotted a rather sunny spot that looked like it had good potential to take a nap in later and veered off his path once more.

Quote:
You know what? Maybe this isn't so bad. Due to the copious flaps you've done in the past you're able to stay in the air, and with a little maneuvering, you even make it look like you're here on purpose. Right up until the point where you land, because oof, that wasn't something you want everyone to remember.

Thankfully there were no blue dragons nor trees in his way and after R'ul got his attention again, Ignaviath was able to get back on track. Totally mean to veer off like that, yup! He came in for a landing once more, eager to be back on the ground, but he didn't pay much attention to his speed and crashed into the dirt harder than he anticipated, knocking the wind from himself a bit. He whined and dragged himself over to his rider, seeking comfort. He was not going up again, thank you very much!

Vera and Skurkurth waited for their turn, the pair feeling confident despite Skurkurth's initial defiance. He didn't feel like flying this morning, but now that Vera had hyped him up a bit he was itching to get into the air.

"Remember, take your time," Vera said, rubbing Skurkurth's neck fondly. "Think about where you're going and pay attention to your surroundings. Dragons could come from above or below, not just behind or from the sides."

Don't worry, I got this, Skurkurth said with confidence, his head held high, wings mantled and ready. He took off surprisingly well, his wings beating hard to get him aloft.

Quote:
Psh, this flying thing is smooth sailing! You don't know what all the fuss is about. Except, now that you're here it occurs to you that you don't know how to land.

Skurkurth wheeled through the sky easily, wings alternating between beating and gliding. He flew circles around some of his siblings and the other clutch that had hatched right before his own, sneering at some of the shining bronze males that were struggling. Ha...not so high and mighty now, hm?

He twisted and turned and flared his wings, ready to land, but...er...how did this part go again?

Quote:
Who's laughing now? You've got this thing. Yeah, take that! And that! And... whoops, didn't stick the landing.

Oh yeah! Flaring harder and using his tail to steer, Skurkurth planned a rather grand landing by dropping in right in front of a few greens waiting to take off. Unfortunately they took off sooner than he anticipated, earning himself a few wing strikes to his face. He trumpeted in alarm and hit the ground hard, rolling a few times in the dirt. He was up on his feet immediately despite the botched landing, striding away from the scene as if nothing had happened. Yup. No one saw that.
