Another day was dawning upon Western. It was a little early, but soon, all the dragons and people of the Weyr would be preparing to roll out of bed. There were chores to be done, drills to run, and a hundred other things that simply could not be ignored. They could, however, be put to the side for a few hours. Her eggs were moving so frequently now that Kleoth could not explain how she could sense that now was the time, but then again, she didn’t need to. She simply knew.

Phryana. She called, feeling a flicker of amusement when her rider jolted awake and nearly fell out of her bed in her haste. You have a little time yet, my love, but they are ready. She reached out to the sire of her brood, extending the proper courtesy as was his right. Pipith. Please tell Yours that it is time.

She began to hum, her eyes whirling steadily with blues and purples as she grazed each hardened shell with her nose. The sound built in her chest, growing louder, and she knew that other dragons would begin to add their voices to hers. No ordinary day, this! The Weyr would gather together so they could all welcome her children into the world, celebrating them among their ranks.

My children. She almost sighed, knowing their time together was nearly at an end. My brave, beloved children. Know that a part of my hearts will go with you today as you go to find Yours. I love you, and always will. You are my pride and joy. Bittersweet as this moment might be, knowing that this was the beginning of her children’s beautiful lives was more than enough to outweigh her desire to keep them close and safe forever. They would go on to do great things for Pern, she was certain.

All that was left to do was wait. Humming with all the love her hearts could offer, Kleoth watched her eggs, knowing that soon, there would be hundreds of eyes upon them instead of merely hers.

General Hatching Information

Welcome to Western Weyr's fourth (and the shop's eighth) PC Hatching! We want to thank everyone for participating in this shop and giving it so much life! Mr Cheri and I wouldn't be here without you, so thank you for sticking around. That said, we do want to go over some general rules (IC and OOC) and reminders so this Hatching can be a success!

General Information & Rules
  • Not every Candidate or Player is going to Impress. Please, please, please don't get too discouraged or upset if that is the case. We only have a limited number of pets to give away, and honestly tried to find the best fit for each dragon. There will be other Hatchings, I promise. gaia_star Many, many, many other Hatchings.

  • Please don't get upset if Staff impresses a dragon. We try not to take away from the players fun, but staff are also players, too. Any dragons that might go to staff were either customed-in behind the scenes or chosen simply because their Candidate was the best fit. As stated above, there will be other Hatchings.

  • Please don't get upset if your Candidate does not Impress to your preferred color. Just like in Pern, nobody could ever guess whether or not a Candidate Impressed, much less a certain color. This is supposed to be fun, not some sort of tragedy. If you don't like the dragon that we fit to your Candidate you absolutely cannot rehome it or give it away. Additionally, if you throw a fit about it and we find out, or you discourage other players, this could bar you from future Hatchings. We honestly tried very hard to match Candidates with characters so the fit mad sense.

  • Don't discourage others or vent at them if they Impress (or don't Impress) a dragon or certain color. If we hear about players giving other players crap for their Impression, we can bar you from future Hatchings. There will be other characters, other Hatchings, and other opportunities for all! Please keep this fun and support one another, not tear folks apart.

  • We really, really, really, really loved all of your Candidates! No really, Cheri and I hemmed and hawed for days. In some cases, Candidates may not have Impressed because we have ideas for particular colors or personalities for them. If you do not Impress, we are aware, and we have big ideas for the future. Please give us a chance and be patient.

  • IC Action = IC Consequence. If you role-play in the Hatching and your Candidate does something stupid, remember that ICly there could be hell to pay. If a dragon doesn't maul you, then A'ral could very well pull you from the Sands. Please don't make A'ral do that. Additionally, regardless of whether or not you signed your character up for death or maiming or not, if you do something stupid ICly, the shop has a right to respond accordingly, and that includes death. Please, don't put us in that position.

  • We will hatch all the PC eggs and play the hatchlings until they Impress. Once they Impress, they will be the players to control. We will quote folks in the Hatching Sands, but also PM them the dragonets profile.

  • The Hatching Thread will likely peter off after the last egg Impresses. We may not close it officially so folks can RP in the thread as needed. Also, please, once you Impress, continue to RP in the Hatching Thread! It gets kind of sad and unfortunate when, at the end of Hatchings, only a few stragglers are RPing in it. :c We would love to have everyone feel included, including those who don't Impress or who are posting on the Sands actively.

  • New Rule: We would absolutely love it if folks REFRAINED from immediately plotting their baby dragonets until ALL THE EGGS ARE HATCHED. We don't want people who Impress near the end to miss out on plots or bonding with others. There will be plenty of time for plots after the Hatching has ended! It's okay to RP with folks, or talk about your bbs, but just... try not to immediately line them up with plot ideas or story ideas well before the last egg has hatched.

  • Everybody is encouraged to participate! Bring your weyrfolk and holdfolk to watch by having them sit in the Sands and cheer. Candidates, whether they were at the Touching or not, should be on the Sands an will be assumed to have arrived regardless if you have time to post them. Dragons can perch on ledges to watch the newest babies, and comment to one another. Guests and visitors will be flown in -- from mighty Holders to the families of those hold- and craftbred Candidates. Come one, come all -- even the lower cavern workers, while some might have volunteered to help behind the scenes for extra pay, are also encouraged to watch if they wish. It's up to you! This is a time for celebration.

  • This is for Western Weyr only! The only High Reaches guests will be those who have direct family as Candidates! i.e. brother, sister, son, daughter, etc.

  • There will not be a PC Hatching Feast thread -- nobody ever RPs much in them so the celebration can continue either in the Hatching Thread or you may make your own private, personal Feast threads.

  • This Hatching takes place in the early morning--rise and shine! This means the Fest will happen immediately after the Hatching.

IC Rules & General Information
  • Candidates can get mauled, so they have been told time and time again to stay out of the dragonets way! If they are attacked, they are to try to cover their head and protect their vulnerable bits, but should not really fight back. That might upset it further.

  • Guests and visitors CANNOT walk on the Sands--they must sit in the tiers. Those who arrive late will be ushered to seats closest to the entrance, or asked to stand at the entrance itself, or just wait outside. Any person who is not a Candidate that tries to get on the Sands will be removed, unless (of course) a dragon is attempting to get to you. Healers are allowed onto the Sands to carry fallen Candidates back once it's safe to do so.

  • Unaffiliated riders, non-Western Weyr natives, and crafters not living at Western Weyr ARE NOT allowed unless they actually have a reason to be there. This includes being an invited guest (usually Journeyman or Masters of renown that have something to offer the Weyr), of prominent family lines (they do love their Holders), happen to be dating someone who lives at the Weyr and are their guest, or you happen to be going because an immediate family member is on the Sands as a Candidate. That's it. Most of Pern never, ever, gets to see a Hatching so they are meant to be special when folks do go. They're not open for just anyone to come into willy-nilly.

  • Do not break into eggs! Period. If an egg needs to be broken into, the shop will make it VERY clear.

  • Candidates are asked to arrive on the Sands with a thin pair of sandals-- no boots or heavy soled shoes! The Sands are hot, so standing from foot-to-foot is common.

  • Candidates will be brought to the Hatching Sands by A'ral. Should they Impress, they will take their dragons outside of the Hatching Sands entrance, where Weyrlingmaster Liat and her assistants will have prepared meat to feed them, and have buckets of oil and brushes to scrub them once fed. Baby dragons tend to eat a lot, and tend to itch a lot as their skin dries. The new weyrlings belongings will be moved from the Candidate Barracks to the Weyrling Barracks by drudges and lower cavern's workers as needed.

  • Visitors and guests are invited to stay for the Hatching feast and riders will bring them home when finished.

Any other questions? PM Uta or Mr Cheri! With that, welcome to the Hatching!!

It was early. Far, far too early for the Candidatemaster to be crawling out of his warm bed and into his wherhide pants. But even though his light touch stirred R'mor, he could not dither as the eggs awaited on the Sands. Zinath had woken him from dead sleep with her humming, and he knew his duty. Swiftly dressing, A'ral marched to the barracks to alert his charges.

"Wake up. Kleoth's eggs are due to hatch any moment now!" he spoke in a bark; loud enough to be heard, and if his voice didn't alert the Candidates, Zinath's gentle croons would. "Single file to the Hatching Grounds, just as we've practiced." He led them out, one after the other, in as orderly a line as could be managed... and as soon as they were dressed, at any rate.

Wake up, sleepy ones. The eggs are hatching, the gentle green called to the Candidates, reinforcing her rider's summons. When they had begun to file behind him, A'ral led them to the Hatching Grounds. The humming of dragons could be heard and almost felt - certainly A'ral imagined that the Candidates could feel it through their sandals, at any rate - as they made their way to the Sands.

Golden Kleoth awaited them, and Candidatemaster A'ral was prepared to meet her summons. When they arrived, he gave them a long, hard look. "From what Candidatemaster F'dral has told me, some of our Candidates need another reminder that dragonets are all basically good. No matter how you may feel about a particular hatchling, I would caution you to think neutral thoughts. If possible, positive and welcoming thoughts will see us through. If they charge you, step aside. Don't run. Running will incite chaos on the Sands. If you must run, run toward the healers... who will be waiting. You have all been trained on this. I know you're prepared. Do me proud."

And if they still had questions, well... they knew where to find him. He would be watching.

DascyanaCandidate:She/Her

Rising early had never been something Dascyana ever grew fond of. It was a routine that had been trained into her during her days at the courtesan hall that had come in very handy as a candidate at Western Weyr. So having a small respite where she could sleep in a few moments was always greatly appreciated.

Sadly, this was not one of those moments.

A'ral's loud bark of a voice had the blond woman shooting up in bed from shock, bright eyes scanning the room wildly as her mind tried desperately to take in what was happening and going on. His words took a few moments to process and it was more from Zinath's soft touch that two and two were finally put together.

Eggs were hatching.

Scrambling to her feet, Dascyana rushed with many of the others to dress in the white robes and sandals. Her long blond hair was in a plait to keep it out of the way as well as help from getting too hot. She was finishing the plait as she moved to get in line, listening to what A'ral spoke. She didn't understand how anyone could think of a dragonet as evil, they were just babies after all. Positive and happy thoughts, this was a joyous day even if she didn't end up finding her dragon partner. The hatching of these little ones into the world was always such a wonderful occasion no matter what. She was determined to enjoy it, as well as the feast afterwards, if she impressed this day or not.

Dascyana followed the others out onto the sands, her eyes scanning the other candidates on a look out for friends that she could stand with. Her eyes caught sight of Sablie and she moved over to the other girl, smiling at her. "I wonder if it's normal to feel excited and nervous at the same time. Or maybe my stomach is just upset." She couldn't help but joke a bit as she stood beside the other. "I can't believe it's already time." This was breathed more to herself as she couldn't help but feel as if Kleoth had only clutched a seven day ago.

Nuamia

The call to get up startled Nuamia awake. She knew instantly what it meant and went from asleep to energized in an instant. With practiced movements she was in her robe and sandals and headed out the door with the others. A’ral didn’t say anything new when he paused them at the entrance and Nuamia focused on the Queen humming in the background. Every time a hatching happened it was full of excitement and expectation.

She bowed as she entered and made her way around to one side. She kept an eye out for Ciraine and Kadosse, hoping to see them and maybe meet up. Nuamia bounced from foot to foot a little as she adjusted to the heat of the Sands and couldn’t stop the shiver of excitement and nerves. There was so much potential today.

Navit

Other candidates might instantly know what being woken up at the crack of dawn by the Candidatemaster meant, but it took Navit time to muddle through what was going on around him. Once it got through his sleep addled brain that the eggs. Are. Hatching! He jumped to it and stumbled into his robe and sandals. He listened attentively to A’ral, trying to remember all that he had learned in the last few months. It was as if it had all slipped away now though in the excitement, and he just hoped that he could keep it together. This was a dream come true for him and he felt as if he could fly without the help of a dragon at that moment.

Following the lead of those around him, he bowed to Kleoth and moved inward. His eyes were wide in wonder at everything. Even though he had been in the Sands to touch the eggs, it still was so new and amazing to him every time he entered. And today, there would be baby dragons! He couldn’t stop the skip in his step as he kept moving to allow room for others.

Mhinadi

Mhinadi had already not been sleeping much or particularly soundly since the Touching. There were too many thoughts chasing remembered dragonet voices around in her head for that. So when A'ral came in to wake them to get dressed and on their feet, she was one of the first to pop up off her cot and get to it.

Once her robe and sandles were on, she made sure to seek out Oreune, reminding her, "Nothing in our thoughts but hope and thoughts of everything being fine, remember? You promised to try." And Mhadi would hold her to it.

She wasn't going to hold the other girl's hand, but when they got to the Sands, she did keep her place beside Oreune. Just for backup. Just in case.

Ollandin

Hevy eyed and surprisingly stumble-footed, Ollandin rose and dressed in his robe, then joined the line shufflinf toward and then onto the Sands. He bit back a yawn as the heat of the space washed over him. It wasn't that he asn't excited. He as on his way toward wakefulness and eager alertness, no question. It was just that the warmth reminded him of the sort-of-comfort of the cot and blanket he'd left behind. He just needed a moment, he thought, scratching at his chest as he found a place among the other boys.

Right. Stand up straight, knuckle the sleep crust away from his eye. Don't. Yawn.

As anticipation heightened, the Purple and Orange Dapple Egg gave a violent shake. It wobbled, toppling over entirely onto its side... and stayed there almost accusingly for a long, long moment.

Then... another wobble. Another.

Bit by bit, the egg had wobbled itself into a complete circle.

Sablie (She/her)

Sablie was sleeping peacefully, having wonderful dreams of flying, when A'ral's and Zinath's wake up call came. Even though the green's warning was more gentle, it didn't stop the blonde from sliding unceremoniously out of bed. She might have bumped her head a bit on the floor, but she just laughed it off. Scrambling up from the floor, with the blanket nearly having her meet the floor again, she somehow managed to right herself and start getting into her white robes. Then she slipped into her sandals as quickly as she could and got her hair into its usual messy mermaid braid. Once ready, she followed the others out and to the hatching sands, she was so excited the time for the babies to hatch had finally come. She listened to A'ral's usual instructions, along with a reminder not to judge the babies. The mind healer nodded, that made sense.

Once they were given the go ahead, she headed onto the sands and did a bow in the direction of Kleoth. Then she went to stand in a spot she felt would be right. Her eyes looked up into the stands, wondering if Lyfrocier and Guarath were up there, watching. Then she heard Dascyana beside her, so her blue eyes turned to her friend with a grin on her face. She was glad her friend had been able to find her, she wondered if any of their other friends would join them over here.

"Yep, definitely possible to feel excited and nervous. I mean, this is a big day, that could change the rest of our lives. If ya not nervous, I would wonder how ya was doing it. And it does feel like Kleoth just clutched and we were touching the eggs, huh?"she commented good naturedly. She then noticed movement on the sands, as one of the eggs began to shake quite violently. Well, seems someone knew they had an audience, she waited with bated breath as the egg fell on its side, then made a circle. She couldn't wait to see what kind of egg came out of the egg.

Raiden

It was hard not to be a nervous ball of energy in the days and sevendays following the Touching. Raiden all but ploughed into his chores and lessons, determined to put in a million miles of extra work and effort- certain that it could make all the difference come Hatching (it wouldn't, but don't tell him that to his face).

When A'ral roused them from their sleep, he bounded out of his shirt and trousers and into his robes, a perfect replica of a Pernese version of kangaroo in his springiness. Today would be his day. And a bunch of others whose importance ranked low on his list of priorities. Of course, the dragons-to-be were just as important, if not more so- he had every faith that things would go well for them. It was himself he had to believe in.

Clad in white and thin sandals, he bowed to Kleoth and Phryana once more, nodding to the clutchfather. This was it. Another chance. He watched Purple and Orange Dapple egg with fervent intensity. Were Bion and Riojath here already? What about N'den? He couldn't let his attention waver, so he refocused his mind on the eggs before them.

Sioryl

Between the Touching and now, Sioryl had barely been able to think about anything else other than the eggs in the sand, hardening and getting ready to make their grand debut. It was so hard to focus on anything other than those eggs even if all the lessons were going over what he should do while out on the Sands, how to handle a baby dragon if it was upset or mad, and the best practices if he were to be chosen. It was so much information that, thankfully, had been conveyed before this sevenday. If this was his first time hearing it, Sioryl wouldn't have remembered any of it.

Finally the morning came. Sioryl had been sleeping poorly due to his excitement anyway, so when A'ral came in to wake them he was one of the first to stand by the Candidatemaster's side, robes and sandals on. He was nearly vibrating with excitement, bobbing up and down on his toes, fingers tangling in the hems of his sleeves. He had to force himself to walk slowly so as not to pass A'ral as they headed down to the hatching grounds and listened to the talk once more, glancing towards the sands over and over again.

Finally they were given the all clear to go pick a place to stand. Sioryl again had to keep himself from running and he reached the sands quickly, giving a bow to Kleoth as he tried to contain the excitement and happiness that was pouring off him in tsunami-like waves.

"Oooooh wow," he whispered to himself as he picked a place to stand, his eyes on the eggs as one of them already started to rock and roll. His voice trembled a bit and emotions welled up in his throat, making it hard to talk. He glanced around quickly to see if anyone he knew had made it to the sands yet, but so far his little area was empty except for himself.

He's lookin' for Valendyr!

Surel

Surel woke as A'ral summoned the Candidates from their beds, her stomach giving a lurch of her usual dose of anxiety while her heart beat faster in excitement. She always felt a bit nauseous about Hatchings just because of her warring emotions, but when she got on the Sands it usually settled to a manageable level. This time she'd purposefully stand next to no one in particular, not wanting to accidentally cause her friends harm, and that was probably why her nerves were shot this time around. Since the last hatching at High Reaches she'd made a few decisions about how she'd handle herself on the Sands, the most important being that even if there was a baby dragon on a rampage, she wasn't going to hide behind someone. She wasn't going to push others forward when dragons were nosing about and meeting Candidates. She was going to stand her ground no matter what came towards her today.

She got ready as calmly as she could, still smiling and speaking with friends as they exclaimed their excitement. Heading down to the Sands and listening to A'ral speak was as usual, and once they were told to go she moved with the group rather than hanging to the back. She wanted to start this off on the right foot.

A deep bow and a little 'good morning' to Kleoth done, Surel picked a spot on the sands that was a bit far from the people she knew. She gave them a little wave and two thumbs up to let them know she was all right way over here and that seemed to do the trick. Letting her arms fall to her side, Surel shook her hands out and let out a slow, steadying breath while closing her eyes. She could do this.

Noise alerted her that one of the eggs had moved, and she opened her eyes to watch Purple and Orange Dapple Egg spin slowly in a circle on the sand. It truly was starting.

Lyfrocier of Green Guarath

Fret not, Sablie--there's a particular Green who isn't going to let you go looking through the crowd without seeing her for too long. There was making a well-timed entrance, and then there was being overlooked entirely! That, and--well, Lyfrocier was trying to pick Sablie out of the crowd of Candidates himself, and in the interest of keeping the two of them from staying distracted looking for each other, somebody had to intervene. It just so happened that she was the perfect dragon for the job--how serendipitous!

Sablie! Sablie, darling, that's too far to the right. We're up here, thank you!
From his spot up in the stands, Lyfrocier remained as stony-faced as ever. He certainly wasn't above taking the hint when Guarath offered to point Sablie out--he doesn't yet wave, waiting for her to see him first.
Love--would you mind...?
Already on it! She hardly needed to ask what Hers wanted. As tempted as she was to bugle about it, the Green keeps it down--although the almost smugness in her tone was clear even without any unnecessary displays. Good luck down there, he says. The rest--well, you'll have to find him after the Hatching to find out!
Guarath--
Shh. I know what I'm doing. Her mindvoice carried an amused lilt when she turned it back to Lyfrocier, eyes whirling purple. You can thank me later.

Candidate Ciraine

Ciraine, on the other hand, was not going into this with the same measure of calm and certainty that those already-Impressed may carry this early in the morning. She was groggy, sure, but from the moment she could first hear the low thrum of dragonsong echoing in the Sands, she came alive--the heat radiating up from below would have been enough to lull her back to sleep otherwise, with her luck. Ciraine had made her bows and taken her place with the other Candidates, although she hadn't yet found exactly where she wanted to stand just yet; catching sight of Nuamia was the perfect start, however.

"Oh, hey--" she started, not completely sure that the girl was going to be able to hear her over the general low roar from the crowd. "You picked a good spot! Do you mind if I, um--stand here with you?"
It never hurt to check, she thinks. Ciraine glanced out over the clutch, eyes trailing along the shapes of the eggs until she could locate one in particular--the Teal and Blue Lightning Egg had been particularly upset by the end of the Touching, and she was still a little worried for it even now. Kleoth had certainly assuaged her child's fears in the meantime, but--well, it was hard not to be sympathetic, truthfully. With any luck, though, they'd hatch and find Theirs just fine without having to go through quite so much emotional distress to do it.

Not to be outdone by its similarly-hued sibling, the Purple Spotted Dinosaur Egg began to rock as well, although it took a moment or two for it to actually start moving in earnest. The egg jerked and jostled as the dragonet within tried to make its escape, testing the strength of its shell...and finding it more sturdy than it had expected. Hm. No matter--eventually, it would get through.
In a few seconds, however, it starts to settle down--just enough to stop jostling any other nearby eggs, that is. It had waited for so many sevens now, and it was ready to come out!

Grey Starry Egg was napping quite peacefully, leaned towards its Yellow Swirl and Purple Dinosaur Spots siblings in the best attempt an egg could make to cuddle, when all of a sudden things things started to happen. Mama was humming and talking to them, then soon after that Papa arrived to sit way up high again, and Dinosaur Spots was moving!

And - oh, hey, their friends were here again! Hello friends!!! Grey Starry practically vibrated in anticipation. It wanted to see everyone! There were cuddles to be had and boops to be distributed!

Sorentia had been fast asleep when Riamsoth began to prod her awake while humming. Mine, it is time. The eggs have decided today is the day. As the sun begins to shine so do the baby dragons. Sorentia startled awake at that. It was always a joyous day when baby dragons arrived. She began dressing quickly and soon the two of them were on their way.

Riamsoth arranged herself in a place where she could see but didn’t block anyone else, while Sorentia took a place in the stands. Only a few eggs had started to wiggle by the time they arrived. Both dragon and rider could feel the anticipation mounting. Riamsoth dearly wanted to reach out to Kleoth and let her know how happy she was for Kleoth, but also didn’t want to distract the young mother. She contented herself with bombarding her rider with her joy. Sorentia practically vibrated with the combined feelings.

Up like a shot when the call came (though he was the sort to come to full waking alertness on any given day, no matter how routine or bland), Natiri was on his feet and dressing in rapid, practiced motions in a breath. Outwardly the image of calm, so stoic as to be almost disinterested, inside he was a whirlwind of rushing thoughts. They had only been at the Weyr a brief time, it felt like, and now the hatching had already come. What would happen? What would change? Anything? Nothing? He mentally sprinted through what he'd been taught, the lessons and traditions and anything he could recall (which was quite a lot, mind you) which would guide and inform his actions on the sands. One last breath, tugging the tie on his sandals tight... and the torrent of thought scattered into pensive internal silence.

It was time. He was ready.

The young lad didn't wait for Fyfy as he joined the crowd thronging to the sands, but he kept a keen eye out as he bowed to the gold and took a spot in clear sight of the already-shaking shells. He'd gather her in, or go to her, once she appeared. They had come to the weyr together, and while they might leave the sands apart, if only one of them impressed, for whatever reason he was inclined to want to stay at her side as long as he could. Things could go wrong, and while he would follow the rules about being calm and not running, Fyfy had always been the more emotional of the two. Better to keep an eye on her. And maybe a few other candidates who happened to be nearby.

Sweet Symmetry
Fyfyyyy Natiri saved you a spot!

Anyone else feel free to join in. Natiri is a stick in the mud and takes this all ultra-seriously, but he's a decent little kid!
