As the sun rose over the mountains in the distance Blight woke. She always seemed to wake just as first light peeked over those peaks. It was like clockwork for the old mare. She felt her head rise, the bones a bit stiff and creaky, blue orbs set in deep dark sclera blinking away the last remnants of sleep. Rising from her warm hay nest, she looked over to her mate Maya and felt a smile split her lips. Waking next to her mate everyday was like a dream for her. She never thought for a second that her life would be so idyllic, so perfect. She was old and she knew it but she was happy. Stepping free from the warm hay she walked out into the shadowed forest, the sun not quite having reached the forest floor yet, and nodded to her son keeping watch outside. She reached up to give Varith a quick nuzzle, her son lowering his head to allow it. She was short and she knew it and all her kids with Maya had taken after their father and were a lot taller. It was a running joke in the family and while the young her would have taken offense to people calling her short, she was amused to no end by it now. Her delicate steps into the forest made very little sound with the thick covering of dead leaves the dissipating snows left behind after the long winter. She walked slowly, methodically, with no real destination in mind. Just taking a walk to take a walk. Stretch her muscles, enjoy the gentle breeze blowing through the trees. The spring buds were starting to bloom and scent the air with their lovely fragrances. Blight honestly preferred the winter months to any other season. There was something about the cold planes of the forest during the deep winter...but she didn't dislike spring. It was a lovely time of the year, with light rains and flowers abounding. Love was a big part of spring too. She felt herself smiling again as she thought about love. Love was a big reason she was still alive. The love of her friend Cedric, the love of her mate Maya, the love of her many children... A pang of hurt ripped through her at the thought of her children. The lost two... She'd never forget Skaalbjorn or Siana but she had no proof they were even alive anymore, still she'd never hide her past from her mate, or that she'd had other children before she met him. She'd told her sons and daughters with Maya that they had half siblings though as far as she knew they've yet to meet the ones still living. That part of her family was scattered to the winds and she knew not where Freyja or Altiu were even at. Still she kept them close in her memory and waited for the time when they'd all be together so the errant sisters could meet their new siblings. Stopping at a newly blooming bush with tiny flowers buds opening on their stems she smiled one more time her ruined wings, mere memories of what they used to be, fluttering slightly in the breeze. Her thoughts turned now to the future...

Her walk had taken her out of the forest and into the plains in a surprisingly short time, but when one takes the time to figure out and plan future events without watching where ones hooves take them, then of course one might find themselves in different places. The old her would have panicked and fled right back into the trees but now she found herself watching everyone curiously. There were a surprising amount of couples out here, dancing around each other, vying for attention, or just nuzzling in the grass. It brought a smile to Blight's face as she watched the prancing young ones trying for their first, and hopefully last loves. She always was keen on the idea of love at first sight. Smiling brightly she just waded through the ankle deep grass that hadn't quite grown high enough to hide the necking couples, making her way towards the stream nearby for a soothing drink of water. A few familiar faces complimented her for being out and about for once, playfully teasing her about being such a shut in with that devilishly handsome mate of hers. She just pretended she was a filly again and stuck her tongue out at them, causing a raucous laughter to spill forth from her friends. Ah friends... Another thing she never thought she'd have. After chatting a bit about future plans and when they could all get together for a proper chat Blight parted ways with them and made it to the stream at last, tipping her head slightly and drinking deeply. She didn't know what it was about this particular river but it was also so fresh and the water so tasty and soothing. 'The future...' She thought to herself. What else could it truly hold for her beyond more kids and more years with Maya? What did an old mare like her do with the time she had left? It was honestly a question she couldn't answer, at least not yet... She wondered if she should take some time away with Maya to adventure a bit, maybe meet up with his sister and explore for a time. Her kids always joked that old folks should explore and enjoy their twilight years. She'd always stuck her tongue out at them too. The rivers surface suddenly started rippling as a light rain began to pelt the grass lands. Blight felt herself giggle a bit at that, the rain was slightly warm from the sunshine and she twirled and reveled in the feeling. Her white fur becoming sodden quite quickly in the cloudburst. Finally after one more circular turn she spotted her mate on the edges of the forest beckoning to her with a darkly colored wing. Her heart soaring at the sight of him she trotted off quickly to join him.

Back once again under the shelter of familiar tree boughs she walked side by side with Maya, feeling him occasionally brushing a wing over her back protectively. She felt so like those happy new couples in the fields, her heart fit to bursting with all the love she had for him. He was special, and perfect, and only hers. It had taken her such a long time to find him. She seriously felt like a twitterpated youth all over again any time he nuzzled her cheek, or hugged her with his wing, or did some small kind gesture. She knew he was a warrior at heart and had trained their sons to be strong like him but there was a gentle soul behind all that bravery. With a little dancing trot, the old mare, nudged her mate with her shoulder to get his attention then when he looked at her zipped off into the trees. Turning their walk into a great chasing game. She knew he'd be grinning as he chased after her. She ran and ran and ran but with her smaller stature he quickly caught up and tagged her with a wing telling her she was caught. She mocked a hitched sigh, wishing again that she had wings like he did so she could make it ever more dramatic, and collapsed into a remaining pile of snow that hid from the sun deep in the shade of the forest. Her landing soft enough she waited for him to approach her then she got up and kissed his cheek, watching the strong warrior blush and grin like a happy teen. After their silly little game they spent a lot of time deep in the woods, doing only the gods know what before emerging from the trees back to their home. It was a small rock and dirt cavern that she made as homely and warm as she could by stuffing moss into the crevices so block and drafts and lining the floor with dried grasses from the plains. It wasn't much but it was a home, and one shared by her, Maya, and their two youngest sons Varith and Delsus. Blight had been watching her youngest like a hawk though. Delsus had been acting quite strange. He was lighter on his hooves and always grinning up a storm. She had her suspicions that maybe, just maybe, her son was as twitterpated as she was and that the spring fever had driven him to find a lovely young mare to spend time with. She'd yet to figure out just who it was though, as she was sure most of the available mares, and even stallions if that was his preference, were already paired up. She'd ask in due time if his head was still firmly in the clouds in a few days. For now she was just keen to let him enjoy himself and go wherever the wind took him. Blight smiled at Maya as the pair watched Delsus wander out the entrance and off to whomever waited on the other side of his path. Spring certainly was a lovely time of the year...
