A lot of things about pornography will create a dependency in whoever uses it. it rewires the brain to follow a path of thinking more naturally. What I mean by that is that the brain is shaped by what we think and what we do. Repeated thinking and repeated actions create physical paths in the brain. That is why practice makes perfect for example. Repeated watching of pornographic material for the purpose of self gratification is going to impact the route your thinking naturally takes when you are visually stimulated. It will train your brain to want to go there. A path easily walked is a path that seems welcoming to us.
As human beings we are more than just our outward appearance. Porn forgets that and demotes people to just objects of pleasure. It ignores the entirety of human emotions, and focus on just a couple. Those being self gratification and lust.
About lust Jesus said:
Matthew 5: 27-29
You have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.…
Adultery is a pretty serious thing to God, and Jesus makes a point that it should be to us to. Not only because it is for him, but for reasons of self preservation. It is going to lead us down a road of damnation. Now we don't know the marital status of everyone involved in pornography, but we can assume they are not our spouse now and it is unlikely they are going to be in the future. Jesus further points out that if we think the thought we have committed it in our heart. We have in a way done the deed, and are on our way towards punishment. That alone should be enough to want to guard our thoughts and eyes. Our very soul depends on it. A final note to be aware of is that he said a woman, not "a married woman". Should that concern us?
Can we do this alone? No. No one can be holy on their own. We need Gods strength and help both in the hour of temptation and in overcoming temptation. Porn is a temptation - it is to look at something, just the outward appearance of something and call it good and desirable without evaluating it as it should be evaluated. Is it good? Does it please God? Does it lead to good things for me, and my path with God? Who should I please more? Myself or God? What should I follow? The flesh with all its desires, or the spirit? Once saved I still have a choice.
Another thing about porn is that it is a lie. It lies about several things. It makes human sexuality into a business. God made it to glorify him, and his relationship with us through Jesus. Look at the many uses of adultery in the old testament as a symbol of apostasy, or as Israel being described as a harlot as an example. Look at the church being described as the bride. God likes that we are exclusive. We should exclude others in favor of him and of the one he has designed us to be with. In marriage we see a picture of God and his love for us. It is meant as not just a commitment between two people, but a picture of a bond much greater. Failing in representing this greater commitment is a sin. It is breaking a promise to God. You might not get married, or might not be married. Someday you could be though. You will be one with a person. Not just through the marriage itself, but through the act of reproduction.

Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.”
Watch who you are joining yourself to.
Porn lies about you. It tells us that we are the most important person in our life. We need to do everything in our power to satisfy ourselves. You are not the biggest person in your story. Look at the Bible. Everyone is a smaller part of a greater story. Our gratification of the sense is purely selfish, purely driven by placing our desires on the wrong thing. Driven by thinking we are greater and more deserving of things than we are. Sexual exclusivity is a blessing in that through it you partake in something God has approved of and even established, going all the way back to our first ancestors.
Porn lies about the importance of an emotional connection. There are no emotional connections in porn. Human beings in porn are not three dimensional. We feel - we have emotions. Those emotions come from God.
They are not bad in themselves, but we can use them in way that harm us or others, and go against design. Desire is not bad in itself, it is when it is directed at the wrong thing that it becomes wrong.
All these things porn lie about should be an indicator in itself that it has an origin in the father of lies, not in the origin of all good - God. |
