As a youth, Sanosuke ran away from home to join the Sekiho Army, a group of farmers and merchants who fought for the Ishin Shishi during the Meiji Revolution. When the Sekiho were betrayed and executed by the other revolutionaries, Sanosuke escaped and becomes a fighter-for-hire to vent his anger. He is hired to attack Kenshin, a former Ishin Shishi, but when Sanosuke is defeated he becomes Kenshin's best friend and fighting partner. Mr. Fanservice New Media Are Evil: In the anime. He's terrified and superstitious of photography, believing the camera steals people's souls. To be fair, it is documented that some Japanese during the late Tokugawa and early Meiji period held these superstitions, even when Japanese photographers are already being trained in the craft. No Sense of Direction: Gets lost even when he has a map and compass handy. Oral Fixation Fixation: Always seen chewing something (his namesake, Harada Sanosuke of The Shinsengumi, is portrayed the same way in the flashback chapter). Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: He's the manly man to Kenshin's sensitive guy. Spanner in the Works: During the Kyoto arc, Shishio watches Kenshin, Saitou, and Sano from the deck of his ironclad battleship, the Rengoku (that he had sunk fully 3/5ths of his finances into acquiring) and dismisses Sano as a mere tagalong. Sano then does him the favour of throwing a few bombs that his friend Katsu had given him right before leaving Kyoto at the Rengoku, which sinks pretty shortly afterwards. He does it again during the raid on Shishio's base: Shishio was counting on Monk Anji, Seta Soujiro, and Aoshi Shinomori to weaken Kenshin, while Blind Sword Usui weakened Saito. Instead, Sanosuke was able to beat Monk Anji alone, keeping Kenshin from taking internal damage before his fight with Shishio. Walking Shirtless Scene: Speced up with a sarashi. Walking the Earth: At the end of the series. Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Terrified of trains and photographs in the anime. The scene where these fears are revealed and Kaoru fails to dispel them is a Crowning Moment of Funny. Truth in Television in that a lot of Japanese were still a bit creeped out of said Western implements after the Bakumatsu, even with Japanese-trained photographers in regards to cameras. The Worf Effect: While he's not defeated often, his utter loss to Saitou TWICE prompts him to train himself. Plus in the anime, Aoshi takes him out in a single blow as does Shishio in the manga and anime. Worf Had The Flu: His loss to Shishio, while inevitable given who he was, makes a lot of sense considering the condition he was in. Nobody's ready to fight a master swordsman after trading hits with someone like Monk Anji. A fact that was actually pointed out by Shishio himself— he kept Monk Anji as the first line specifically because, in his words, nobody could walk away from him unscathed. And given the way Monk Anji fought, it's very likely he would have crippled Kenshin or Saito, who are more skilled than Sanosuke but can't just stand there and tank hits.

Member of Team 10. Naruto's resident snarky Teen Genius and the poster boy for Brilliant, but Lazy. The first the viewers see of Shikamaru is a person who complains about receiving any work at all. This, combined with the fact that his test scores were almost as low as Naruto's, cause others to initially think that he's a failure and a loser... a perception that Shikamaru doesn't mind in the least. It's only later that Asuma reveals that yes, Shikamaru is perhaps the smartest person in world, having scored over 200 on an I.Q. test disguised as a game so it wouldn't bore him. Though, like the rest of his clan, his primary jutsu is the ability to control or attack his enemies by extending his shadow, it's his intelligence that makes Shikamaru the first of the Konoha 11 to be promoted from Genin to Chunin. His fight with Temari impresses the Third Hokage even though he forfeited. His first task isn't an easy one, natch: it's to lead a team consisting of him, Naruto, Choji, Kiba, and Neji to go retrieve Sasuke. While there, he engages Tayuya, a member of the Sound Four. He almost dies at her hands, but is saved by Temari. Later, after the mission is a failure, he considers quitting, but after some encouragement by his father, decides to stay the course. Through the filler arcs and his early actions in Shippuden, it's shown that he has decided to, if not step it up, then to at least shoulder some responsibility. Shikamaru's best friend is his teammate Choji, although he also becomes extremely close to Naruto as the series progresses. Through this friendship, he helps Naruto to recover from a minor Heroic BSOD following Jiraya's death, announcing that he's going to take on Kurenai's kid as his apprentice. In Shippuden, he shows up in the first episode (with Temari, no less). He later becomes an Ascended Extra and stars in his own arc. He first joins the newly-formed Niju Shotai (Akatsuki Hunters) with Asuma. There, he's forced to watch as Hidan, a member of Akatsuki, kills his sensei. This provokes him to chase down and engage Hidan - which he does, culminating in his Crowning Moment of Awesome after he defeats Hidan with surprising little effort. After he returns, he decides that he's going to become a harder worker to honor Asuma's memory. He also was recruited by Tsunade to decode Jiraiya's final communication to the village. Later he becomes acting general in Gaara's place of the Fourth Division with his friend Choji and (possible) love interest Temari serving under him. Animal Motifs: Deer Ascended Extra: He's basically became a semi-main character and the most developed of the Konoha 12 outside of Team 7. Badass Bookworm: A particular type (see Book Dumb and Brilliant, but Lazy). Big Brother Mentor: Starting with the "Sasuke Retrieval Arc" at the end of Part 1, Shikamaru has taken the role as acting as the foil and giving advise to Naruto. This came to it's peak when Shikamaru managed to shake Naruto out of his depression over Jiraiya's death.He also does the same with Choji. Book Dumb: Has never shown any interest in cerebral pursuits, preferring to take a nap, despite his high intelligence. Brains and Brawn: With Choji. He's the Brains. Breakout Character: He became unexpectedly popular and thus his role became more and more prominent as the series went on. This is taken Up to Eleven in the latest chapters where in the Joint Shinobi Forces, he's placed as commander of the fourth division as Gaara's proxy. One anime's omake lampshades this with Shikamaru suggesting that the series be renamed Shikamaru Shippuden with Temari as his co-star. Brilliant, but Lazy: An excellent example, to the point that he's the former Trope Namer Subverted after Asuma's death. Catch Phrase: "How troublesome." ("What a drag." in the English dub.) Character Development: Has a multi-point character arc that unfolds over the course of years. None of it due to interacting with the protagonist, apparently... though in a recent chapter, he admits being with Naruto makes him want to follow whatever path he does. The Chessmaster: Both literally and allegorically. Crazy-Prepared: He planned the entire fight with Kakuzu and Hidan before it happened and setup a hole to bury Hidan days in advance. Dark Is Not Evil Casting a Shadow: Combined with Shadow Pin, he uses shadows to great effect, so much so that he is capable of both strangling and stabbing people with them. In fact, they shape his view of women as being bossy and "troublesome". Yet, as his father lampshades about Shikamaru's mother, they all have their sweet sides. The other two are Temari and Ino. Meaningful Name: All three members of Team 10 are named after the hanafuda card trick ino-shika-chou (boar-deer-butterfly). Shikamaru means "deer child," Nara is a city known for its deer park, and Shikamaru's family raises deer for their antlers. Mr. Fanservice: Like Kiba, Neji, Naruto, and Sasuke, he has a dedicated female fanbase. Nerves of Steel: Has shown them a number of times. Just recently during the war when Kinkaku launches an attack against him, he doesn't move and lets the attack come within inches of killing him without even blinking. He apparently was waiting for Ino to use her mind transfer jutsu. Oblivious to Love: Clueless that Shiho has a huge crush on him or that Temari may like him. Odd Friendship: With Naruto. Ironically, it might be Naruto's most normal friendship in the manga. Plot-Driven Breakdown: His Shadow Possession jutsu seems to get weaker each time he uses it in a fight, regardless of how much chakra he has at the moment. Wouldn't Hit a Girl: He claims that its against his moral code to strike a lady. Unfortunately, he has also had the misfortune of having female opponents for all of his major battles during the first series. However, his style of fighting at that time didn't involve directly hitting to begin with. He exploits a loophole within his own moral code when Tayuya goes One-Winged Angel, allowing himself to attack her directly because she's no longer a human girl. Xanatos Gambit: Loves using these in his strategies. For example using Hidan's power against him. If this opponent didn't use it then his entire fighting style would fall apart, but if he did it would make his ally vulnerable. Gambit Roulette: He would rather make long term plans than consider if they would actually work.

Throttle is the tan one, a quiet and decisive natural leader who cares deeply for those under (and over) his command- even though he may be too manly (or mousely) to show it. He was groomed by Stoker, the creator and former leader of the Freedom Fighters, to take command- but something interrupted it, and he ended up in space with Vinnie and Modo. Curiously enough, he's the only one who's displayed the Martian skill of telepathy, and telepathic trickery as well. He was blinded in the Mars-Plutark war, and courtesy of Dr. Karbunkle now has semi-working replacement eyes that he needs his signature pair of sunglasses to see with. Valgaav Voiced by: Wataru Takagi (Japanese), Scottie Ray (English) The main antagonist of Slayers TRY. Originally an Ancient Dragon named Val, Valgaav witnessed and survived a holocaust against his own kind from the Golden Dragons. This left him a bitter and hopeless man, but his life changed when he met the Mazoku Lord Gaav; finding him suitable for his goals, Gaav gave Val a portion of his power, making him a being with dragon and Monster abilities. His anger comes to a head after Gaav's death, and he sets forth a plot that he hoped would stop the endless conflict between the Mazoku and the Shinzoku: by destroying the world with the power of the Black Orb's Mazoku Lord, Dugradigdu, and effectively "purifying" it. Avenging the Villain Break the Cutie: He bluntly forces his cynical views on the naive and prissy Golden Dragon Filia frequently. It takes a viewing of the massacre of his race and what happened to him after in order for her to completely snap, however. Half Breed: Half dragon, half Monster, although his Monster side is more prominent. Notably, he gets little flak for his half-breed status. The Cameo: Briefly appears along with Gaav and Fibrizo in the opening song for Slayers Evolution-R. Canon Foreigner: An anime-exclusive villain. Whereas Hajime Kanzaka, the novel writer, disregards the third anime season, he stated that he is fond of Valgaav. Also, a number of years ago, Valgaav was the only anime-exclusive character to make it in the top ten of a character popularity contest. Despair Event Horizon: Crossed it in his backstory. Fantastic Racism: He loathes just about everyone, but most of his hatred is against the Golden Dragons (and dragons in general). Given what they had done to him, (and given that many of them are cowardly and manipulative) it isn't entirely unjustified. Jade-Colored Glasses Last of His Kind Misplaced Retribution: Has a vendetta against Lina for killing Gaav - it's misplaced because it was Fibrizo who killed Gaav, not Lina. Painful Transformation: The demonic arm that was given to him by Gaav occasionally grows and moves on its own. It's shown to be a painful experience and Valgaav has no control over it. Rapunzel Hair: As a dragon. Walking Shirtless Scene: Spends most of the time with kind of shirt on, other than a flimsy, abdomen-baring top at the season's start. Well-Intentioned Extremist: An incredibly twisted variant. In simple terms, he wants to off the Lord of Nightmares by destroying both the Gods and the Monsters, putting their stalemate to an end. To do this, he summons a Monster Lord from ''another'' world to destroy his. It should be noted that despite despising both of the world's higher forces, it's a bit hypocritical when one realizes that he's relying on a Mazoku to perform his goal. You Gotta Have Teal Hair
