Half-frozen in fright, the pink and black haired girl stared up at the giant building that loomed over her. She had never been a very large vampire, but she felt absolutely miniscule compared to the monolith before her. It was nothing like she'd ever seen in Hemlock...

But her fear of the building was not strong enough to keep her out. She needed a place to hide.

So utterly petrified was she that Melpomene didn't even take notice that the pools surrounding her were made of blood; and that the city she had been running through was not to be found. All Melpomene knew was she needed to hide, and she needed to hide now. The monsters that had been chasing her were surely not far, and if she had found her way here, the little vampire was absolutely positive they would find their way as well. She couldn't possibly know that she was at Ennoia's temple... for she did not know that the gods on high gave two thoughts of such peons such as herself.

Had Melpomene but known where she had stumbled... she would have never dared to let herself draw near. She would not enter, would no break into the building -- but there were shadows enough, darkness, where she might lay low. With ears alert, straining to hear the approach of her oppressors, the bloodied vampire found the most shadowed archway, and slid down behind one of the pillars. She shrunk herself low, wrapping her arms about her knees, and sat as still and as quiet as she could.

Her ears strained, her muscles ached, every fiber tense. She wasn't clear on what part of the city she'd found herself in--unaware she had been swept up by Ennoia's magic and her own innate need-- but here she was, trembling. She was hungry, she was exhausted, and she was trying very hard to be still. Hunt or being hunted... and poor Melpomene had never learned the skill. At least not properly. She had watched, and emulated what she could... and had managed enough to keep herself alive.

But she was not so skilled as many vampires, and sometimes, the hunter became the hunted, as had happened to her. She had unnknowingly picked the wrong target, and found herself attacked and on the run. Such was the life of the clanless, especially for one like she. Oh, Melpomene could be fierce, as all vampires were wont to be -- but she had not been born with a golden spoon as some had or been accepted into a Clan; she hadn't lived a day without fear, without anger, without mistrust, and always with the knowledge she had somehow been hatched an utter failure.

She was not fit to be called a vampire... And yet, she survived. Somehow, despite all her shortfalls, she had yet to be turned to dust.

Why she fought for unlife was beyond her... perhaps, because it was the only life she had. She knew no better than what she'd been given, and did not know that it could perhaps be better. She was a survivor... and even now, huddling in the shadows, Melpomene was ready to fight tooth and claw for another night.

Ennoia had been napping on a chaise lounge in her bedroom. Building a temple out of nothing but her own imagination had been just a touch exhausting. Her lithe body was stretched out, arms tucked beneath a pillow that her cheek was resting against. The tip of her tail flicked as if to convey that this slumber was not one of a deep sort. The Goddess did not dream yet, perhaps never would. At the moment, sleeping was simply rest and nothing more.

Due to the light nature of this little power nap, the Goddess was still in tune with her senses and, more importantly, the threads that connected her to her Clanless. One of those threads was being plucked at, vibrating violently, and eventually pulled harshly upon. Ennoia answered the call without opening her eyes, snapping Melpomene from wherever she had been to here.

It was not the terrified Clanless scrambling to find a hiding place that caused Ennoia to stir. No, it was the things that had been pulled here with here. Her eyes snapped open and a guttural growl rippled through her chest. They were full of vile, malicious intent and it was focused entirely on one of her darling little lambs. The Goddess would tolerate no such beings to continue living. They had made the mistake of following closely enough that they had been taken to her turf.

Ennoia was up in an instant, moving in determined strides as she carried herself through the temple. She passed Melpomene and, while she were very aware of the trembling little babe, she did not even give her a single glance yet. The temple was left in a still silence at Ennoia's presence leaving it as she set forth to hunt.

The Goddess had not been gone a terribly long time. It took little effort to find that which was out of place and dispose of it properly. Not seeming to mind the fact her dress and her fur were soaked in blood, Ennoia was humming as she reentered the temple and stopped in front of Melpomene's hiding spot. She lowered down to her knees and leaned forward, cooing sweetly at her though there was a dark edge to her tone and her smile was wicked. "Was this your enemy, little one?"

Ennoia stretched an arm out towards Melpomene to present the head she was holding by the hair. Quickly, so as not to further frighten the sweet darling, she tossed it far away and paid no mind to the wet thump it made. She could clean the temple with just a snap of her fingers if she wanted to. The dark edge ebbed out of her voice, replaced by warmth instead. "It is dead now. It can't hurt you anymore. Come out, sweet child..." With darkness subsiding, Ennoia blinked her mismatched eyes. Her smile shifted to something much softer and sweeter. The way that Ravnos had looked at her, she was now looking at Melpomene. Ennoia loved her already.

The Goddess wanted to wrap this small, terrified vampire up in all of her safety and nurture her. To watch her grow and blossom. "Tell me your name, little one?"

Someone strode out of the temple, determined, and seemingly angry from what Melpomene could gather, and she shrunk down all the more, hiding her scarred face in her knees, and trying desperately not to shake like a leaf. She hadn't known who lived here, but she was absolutely certain she was the source of the ire. Yet another threat, and once she was discovered, that would be it.

Instinct told her to run, to find a better hiding spot, to disappear further and leave this place... but she didn't dare. She was frozen stiff and the beast within her was riled and ready to lash out at the first provocation. While Melpomene had never lost herself to frenzy before, she would submit to the Beast fully if it meant a chance of survival. She might be small but her claws were sharp any vampires....

Sure enough, the individual who had stormed out moments before returned shortly, the scent of blood hanging thick in the air. Peeking up from her knees, she saw feet stop in front of her, and though she shrunk back and away against the wall as hard as she could, there would be no escape. The most pitiful hiss escaped her lips as Ennoia leaned forward, her fear focused only on the wicked smile and the dark edge in her voice. She was caught. She was trapped! It would all be over soon!!

.... but suddenly, the head of the beast that had hunted her appeared, and Ennoia's fear was stunned into a moments silence. Even her own angry, hungry, riled up Beast seemed to come to heal in Ennoia's presence, as the threat that had driven her here was disposed of. For a long moment, Ennoia simply stared dumbly up at the bloodied vampire before her. There was something about her that.... that put Melpomene to shame. Not that her being ashamed was a very high bar to reach, but there was something greater at play here, and she didn't know what it was. The only thing she could imagine was that Ennoia must be very powerful and very ancient indeed... and now she'd been caught trespassing.

The soft smile, the sweet words, were foreign to the pink-haired vampire. They brought her more fear than the edge and hint of a snarl she'd heard but moments before. "I'm sorry," she spoke, though her words were a strained, panicked whisper. She didn't want to leave her hiding spot, but what else could she do? If she didn't obey, she'd really be in trouble -- and it was clear that this vampire was more powerful than she could imagine.

"P-please, forgive me, M-Mistress--- I'll leave. I'll go. I'll do whatever you want," she hastily explained, a tremble in her voice as she forced herself out of her spot. As she got to her feet, her small stature was clear. Her dress was torn, there were old and new scars upon her, and she very clearly had a rough time of it. If she but knew who Ennoia truly was, she would have turned to dust from embarrassment at her disheveled appearance. How dare she interrupt someone so great.

Thankfully, Melpomene didn't know.

However.... even believing Ennoia to be nothing but a powerful mortal, her thoughts remained the same: how dare she interrupt someone so great.. Gods save her from the punishment that surely awaited her. She hadn't dared looked up at Ennoia, so she could not see the look of love upon the mis-matched beings regard. And even if she had seen it, she would not have recognized it or known what it meant..

The vampire's hesitation had not caught Ennoia off guard. That was to be expected of such a petite, presumably abandoned and forgotten, little thing that had been close to capture just moments before the Goddess had felt her desperate need and brought her to safety even in the midst of her nap. What caught her off guard was the apologies that were urgently muttered once the little femme had scrambled to her feet and refused to meet her gaze. She felt an ache in her chest, and lifted a hand to rub over her heart, which felt like it had been stabbed deeply and viciously by an invisible weapon.

"What is it you believe you should be sorry for?" Her voice was soft, hushed, gentle, as tender as a mother speaking to her terrified babe after the child was awoken by an awful nightmare. The Goddess' eyes swept over the full form of the woman. As small as she was, as disheveled as her appearance, she was still something to behold. Quite something, indeed. Ennoia knew that she was looking at another one of her beloved survivors. It was clear that this child had walked a long, troubled, tiresome path and yet had still been ready to fight.

It did not matter how pitiful the hiss had been or how that snarl had not been the least bit intimidating -- she was still trying, still willing to fight for her continued survival. Despite all the obvious pain this sweet little angel had been through, she was not ready to give up. Good. There would be no giving up. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. She would rather see her Clanless find comfort and safety by joining a Clan than to give up and rot away, become hallowed shells of the entities they once were. She could not even stand the very thought of that happening.

"Please do not call me Mistress." What an odd name to presume she had. Mistress? It did not even have a pretty ring to it like the name bestowed upon her by her fathers. She wrinkled her nose at the thought of being called that for all of eternity. How dreadful. Ennoia sighed softly and when her eyes hit the woman's feet, she trailed them back up to the face that still would not look at her. "I do not want you to leave, little one. Why would you think such a thing?" The Goddess stood slowly in the hopes that slower movements would not startle the poor thing. Her hands reached out and long black claws gently pushed into the front of that pink and black hair, gliding farther back to move the strands away from her face. Her other hand was slow to move, a bare finger touching beneath Melpomene's chin to encourage her to lift her head upward. "I want to take you to the bath, allow you to get cleaned up, and provide you with fresh clothing. Nothing untoward to fear, little dear. Have you a name you would share with me?"

The question the other asked her caught Ennoia off guard. What did she believe she was sorry for? Oh, if only the other could read her heart, she would but know that the poor, pale thing was simply sorry for existing. Her unlife had been nothing but a series of unfortunate events -- and though the beast within clawed and fought to keep them from facing Final Death, Melpomene was well aware that she must have been some sort of joke or fluke the day she hatched. Surely, the gods laughed at her plight--and one of these days, Mel knew that the powers on high would finally squish her out of existence completely.

There was no room in vampire society for weakness, and Melpomene was indeed weak. She had no Clan to claim her, no friends, no family, no support. She was easily picked upon, permanently disfigured, and was always so petrified of being found out, driven out, and killed that life was just an endless game of survival. There was and had never been much pleasure or softness in Melpomene's life, and quaking before this powerful vampire, Melpomene knew that only a true act of mercy would save her. What if she answered wrong? ... but she could not disregard the question.

"For t-troubling you, for coming here. I didn't mean too, Mis--Ma'am," she didn't want to disobey the order that had followed, wincing at the perceived rebuke. Already she was doing wrong, offending the one who had taken care of her problem. Why could she never do anything right? So she shrunk herself even smaller, a few feathers dropping from her wings due to her fear and stress. She was nothing more than a feral kitten, and it was good that she did not know to whom she actually spoke.

Her ears did p***k in surprise as Ennoia said she did not want her to leave. And with ever more shock, did the stranger slowly, gently move through her hair, and turn up her chin. Oh! Her eyes squeeze shut for a moment, embarrassment and shame gripping her. She bared her fangs defensively, but only for a moment--for she was at the mercy of the vampire before her. The little vampire's face was scarred from years of who-knew-what, trailing down her neck, and under her shirt. She was no beauty, and had face surely only a Nosferatu could appreciate.

She hardly knew what to say when the other so kindly encouraged her name, and offered her a bath. Gods, when was the last time she'd had such a luxury? .... The shame at being seen, being talked to, so kindly, and the fear of it all being some gross trick had her emotions well up. A little red, wet tear stung at her eyes, a lump in her throat making it difficult to speak. "...I... I....." What even was her name?

"Melpomene." She whispered, closing her eyes to try to settle the fear, to try not to lash out in frenzy and escape.

What a disgrace to vampire kind she was. An absolute and utter abomination.
