The middle of the night was the preferred time for a solitary wolf to go on a hunt. The gnarled forests of Hemlock provided ample shade which transformed into elongated, dark shadows. They appeared like black voids, efficient for concealing one's presence to sit and lie in wait for unsuspecting prey to pass by. But were he the sit and wait type of hunter? No. Fenrir preferred to feel the adrenaline pumping through his veins, hear the pounding in his ears with every desperate step his prey would take to flee the promise of his teeth and claws. Unfortunately for him, the forests had been unusually quiet these days. Something dark and wicked had stirred and was snapping up all the good game.

What was it? The wolf was uncertain but it were certainly not good news for anyone. He stood over the corpse of a deer and although there were traces of teeth and claws, they were not from him. The Animalia grunted and used his foot to nudge the corpse before he would squat down beside it. Using his crescent shaped scythe, he lifted the creature's lips and leaned closer for inspection. Deep amethyst gems nestled into sockets were shining as the moon that hung high in the sky above illuminated the world around him. The wolf would snarl and pull his weapon back, standing upright and cautiously looking around him. The creature's gums were not just pale, they were white. Something was feeding in a very particular way recently.

Fenrir was no guardian of the forest nor it's woodland creatures... however, he was a territorial beast and he did have need for wildlife, lest he wish to starve. He closed his eyes and tilted his head upward, facing into the wind. It ruffled through his hair pleasantly and soothed his boiling blood with it's crisp, cold sting. The wolf's eyes snapped open when a strange and unfamiliar scent tickled his nose. Was this the scent of whatever was stealing the food supply from his territory? He was about to find out. With determination, the Animalia followed his nose. Cautiously, not recklessly, as he was uncertain what he would eventually find.

Things had been strange lately. There was no doubting that. The shadows of the forest seemed darker, longer, as though some unseen monster could lurch out at any moment and wrap its claws around your ankle...or your throat. A slight shudder ran down Fionnlagh's spine as he made his way down the path. Moonlight dappled his pewter fur as he took careful, quite steps. It wasn't that he was necessarily afraid, but caution was always good. He'd been coming across too many unnatural carcasses these days, and too close to the paths. Whatever was killing things was not being as careful as it once had been. Whatever it was was giving him good reason to exercise caution on his way home. Ending up dead didn't sound particularly appealing.

A snarl sounded not far off and Fionnlagh froze mid step, long ears twitching madly trying to key in on just how off the other creature was. He tilted his head back and forth, trying to get a clear grasp, but he heard nothing further. That was certainly concerning. Stepping back, knowing only that the sound had come from ahead of him, the Baddie edged towards the tree line, slipping into the shadows they afforded. However it would do little to hide his bright mismatched eyes, the golden one catching the light like a beacon as he worked to slow his pounding heart.

His feet flexed in the dirt, as his hands did in the air, trying to release the tension from his body without causing any extra noise. Soft breaths huffed quietly through his nose. He could only hope that it was quietly enough to avoid being noticed by whatever was heading his way. And if he was, well, he was quick on his feet if he had to run. If not, it had been a while since he'd had the rush of a good fight. He could only hope that if it came to that, he wouldn't be fighting for his life. Back against the tree, he watched down the path, waiting. For a brief moment, he wondered if he should just go ahead and run, but he had to remind himself once more that he was not frightened, and running would seem silly, especially if whatever approached him was not worth running from. So it was a waiting game.

While Fionnlagh had managed off the path and into the safety of the dense shadows provided by the treeline, Fenrir was farther up the path. Whatever creature had snarled, he heard it too. It was somewhere between him and the Baddie. The wolf had slipped back into the tree line and stalked slowly, predatory gaze sweeping slowly across the path and the side opposite of him. Much to his disappointment, the snarling creature came into view and was nothing other than a common wolf.

How dreadfully boring. It did not look as though he would catch a glimpse of the mystery beast roaming his turf and wiping out his food supply in the most wasteful manner possible. The wolf was not much of a threat but it was a competitor for food. It was also alone which likely meant it was the sole survivor of it's pack. The Animalia broke free from the treeline and proceeded with caution. He could scare it off, make sure it knew it was overstepping... but a part of him felt a sort of empathy for it. Food was scarce, yes... but it could stay, for now.

A new scent wafted to him and he glanced towards the wolf. A small shake of his head and a low growl was enough to send the creature on it's way. This new scent was a little more enticing. Fenrir could not ignore it to follow after the wolf, instead backing into the treeline once more. His footfalls were nearly silent even amongst the dead leaves and twigs that littered the forest floor. It did not take long before the scent was hanging thickly in the air to his sensitive senses. He spotted a shining eye reflecting the moonlight. This was enough to make him decide this was likely another predator. Fenrir stepped from the treeline into the dense shadows, just opposite the path where Fionnlaugh stood. He'd give it a chance to run first, producing a guttural growl of warning.

It felt like an eternity that the Baddie stood there, barely breathing, just listening for the creature to reveal itself. His long ears twitched rapidly when he heard the paws padding through the underbrush. Suddenly, the wolf came into sight. Fionnlagh relaxed as he watched the wolf dart past him into the woods. It was nothing to worry about after all. Wolves rarely attacked unless threatened, and he certainly had no plans to tussle with a wolf tonight.. A soft chuckle fell from his lips as he adjusted his clothes as he shifted away from the trees, moving to get back on the path and continue his way home. It was only after his feet had hit the path and the moonlight his his fur once more that he heard the secondary growl from the tree line.

s**t.

Had he been too careless? Had the wolf circled back for some reason? His ears began twitching again, this time as well as his nose. No. This was something else. Was the wolf running from whatever new creature this was, he couldn't help but wonder. No matter what, it was too late. Fionnlagh was in the path, moonlight reflecting off his fur and his eyes. Whatever it was was close, and it had surely spotted him, given the warning growl he had heard. His feet flexed in the dirt, once again, weighing his chances of running. He had been lucky the first predator had just been a wolf. What if this threat was more dangerous. After all, the wolf had just been defending its territory and had ignored him. Whatever this was, it had approached him. It knew he was there.

His head turned wildly looking for a give away of the new arrival's location. A shift in the shadow. A snapping twig. Anything. Come one! Anything?!? His heart was starting to race. He had to make a decision and he was wasting precious seconds.

There!

A silvery glint of something just across the path from where he had been concealed. Fionnlagh dropped his stance a bit lower to the ground, creeping backwards away from the other. Was that a scythe? Who just carried a scythe around the woods? What kind of Kat, it was a Kat, he was certain, just carried something like that around? What did he use it for? He felt his own lips curl up into a snarl, a growl rumbling in his throat. This was just another Fae. And he wouldn't run for that.
