xxxPERSONALITYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

INQUISITIVE The two greatest questions a person can ask are “Why?” and “What would happen?”. Though filled with endless curiosity, Ivan won’t simply accept an answer at face value. He loves nothing more than to seek and find the answers out for himself with his own eyes, his own ears, and his own hands.

DETACHED Due to his upbringing, Ivan has difficulty forming lasting attachments. Any sentimental attachments were eventually viewed as a form of dependency and were disposed of or taken away “for his own good”. Yet, as he grows, his general indifference towards his possessions or even forging lasting friendships has created a new set of concerns for his parents who are stumped as to why he has developed a “Reactive Attachment Disorder”. If you ask Ivan, it’s because he simply doesn’t trust his parents after taking away safety blankets, pets, and his best friend for no good reason! What’s the purpose of getting attached when anything he loves is ripped from him the moment he lets his guard down? Still, it must be nice for those that can afford to.

ADAPTABLE While it’s annoying when things don’t go how you want or expect, Ivan accepts that this is just a regular part of life. It won’t do any good to fight against setbacks, so instead, he has learned to roll with the punches so to speak. With his family, for example, he’s learning that if he leans into their expectations of his regimen, he’s in for a much easier time. Is it lying? Yes. But sometimes you’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do if you want to make it. To make it outside the home, oftentimes it’s as simple as a smile.

CHARISMATIC It may be a challenge to forge a close relationship with Ivan, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t easy to get along with. On the contrary, Ivan is brimming with charm and a sharp wit. He enjoys engaging in conversation and debate, as well as getting to know those around him. He is an ever-friendly presence in and out of the classroom.

HUMOROUS Nothing like a healthy dose of laughter first thing in the morning. Ivan loves a good joke, even better to watch a prank or two unfold. He’ll even participate, when he’s feeling particularly cheeky. The world can be so serious; it’s nice to let loose and lighten things up now and again.

OPTIMIST Ivan won’t let a little rain ruin his day. A firm believer that everything happens for a reason, he is always on the lookout for his silver linings. No matter the situation, he can get through it, and come out on the other side better than ever.

LIKES
Chess, especially Wizards’ Chess.
Science Fiction. Not so much aliens and space, but more-so looks at what the future of humanity might look like. Dystopian? A cyber society? Both? Will we destroy ourselves, or will we create a utopia?
People watching. It’s fun to see how each person can react so differently to any given thing.
Flaming Hot Anything. He’s a sucker for some spicy study snacks.
Simulation games.

DISLIKES
To be psychoanalyzed. He doesn’t need anyone to tell him why he thinks or feels the way he does.
When people speak on others’ behalfs, effectively taking someone’s ability to speak for themselves.
Medicine. The human body does amazing things. It doesn’t need all this extra assistance to do its job.
How you can be standing perfectly still in a room all day and your glasses still manage to get dirty. Then you wipe them off with your shirt, and your vision is in a constant loop of either dust-sprinkled or smudged. He hopes to find there’s a spell for this minor–yet constant–inconvenience.
To be out of the loop. He wants to be involved and know exactly what’s happening in the world around him.

STRENGTHS
Interpersonal Skills. Good at matching energies with others to keep conversations flowing smoothly and steering the topic where he needs to. Generally easy to get along with.
Problem-solving Skills.

WEAKNESSES
He’s great for a one-off chat or as a fair-weather friend, but when it comes to delving deeper, Ivan has a hard time opening up.
Doesn’t appreciate critique.

DESIRES
Validation. Acknowledgement that he’s doing his best and that there’s nothing wrong with him.
Just one conversation with either of his parents that doesn’t revolve around their work.

FEARS
That one of these days his Mum’s going to publish a case study on him. Ugh.
Failure. Being unable to live up to his own expectations, let alone others’.

xxxBACKSTORYxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

EARLY CHILDHOOD Ivan is the only son of muggle psychiatrists, Dr. Anthony Cross and Dr. Siobhan Cross. If you were to ask Ivan, however, he’d say he’s more their patient than their child. Deeply engrossed in their work in child psychiatry, the only times Ivan ever felt he truly had their attention was when they were analyzing him. As a small child, he didn’t understand. Ivan was just like every other child–active, adventurous, curious, and wanting nothing more than to play. His mother and father took issue with this. Any time their expectations of him were not met, it was because something was wrong with him. Too much running and playing meant he was hyperactive and impulsive. Questioning what he’s told? Disobedient and inattentive to instructions. If he was too excited or upset, he was manic. If he was disappointed or moped, he was depressive. It seems like any little thing Ivan did had to be a symptom of something. There always had to be a medical explanation, rather than simply being a child.

His best friend growing up was a boy named Felix Scott, whose parents had known Dr. and Dr. Cross since their university days. Friends since they were able to crawl, the boys looked forward to their time together any time they were able. Felix was the yin to Ivan’s yang, bright and cheerful no matter how dreary the day. His energy was infectious. One day however, their parents seemed to get into quite the spat and the two weren’t allowed to play any more. His father said they were becoming “codependent”. His mother believed it was best to separate the two, so that they could develop individually and without becoming a crutch for the other. Ivan didn’t understand, and when he argued, he was punished. As he became more lonely, he became distant, prompting further concern from his mother and father. He was put on medications that only left him feeling numb. Eventually, after several therapy sessions, Ivan realized that if he wanted to be left alone he needed to pretend to be “better”. However, he had to be careful–too happy too suddenly seemed to lead him to further troubles.

Ironically, emulating Felix was what led Ivan to the most success and got him weaned off the medication. Things were doing better for a while, at least until he turned nine.

Suddenly, items were breaking around him. If he was feeling frustrated, he could so much as look at a lamp and it would topple over and break. Though he wasn’t anywhere near it, his parents didn’t believe him. He suddenly was lying and developing destructive tendencies. It was absolutely exhausting to put up with. These incidents would happen on and off until he turned eleven, when he finally received an explanation from a kind adult holding an acceptance letter to… A wizarding school.

Apparently Ivan was a wizard. He thought it was brilliant. Not only was magic real, but here was his proof! He wasn’t lying after all! Yet, his father and mother were still weary. It seemed like they talked to the governess for hours. Eventually, after much deliberation, he seemed to be allowed to attend! Ivan couldn’t wait to get out, see the world, and get a welcome break from his regimen at home.
