xxxxAbout the Professor:
Professor Lola Mutan Ye, or Professor Ye, was born in New Forest. She is the first born child of a Chinese wandmaker and a wood nymph. She has a younger brother that now runs a wood farm that provides quality supplies for wands and brooms.

As a student at Hogwarts, Lola was a Ravenclaw, the Captain of the Ravenclaw quidditch team, and excelled in Charms, Herbology, Transfiguration, and Arithmancy. She was known to be a quiet student who was dedicated to her studies and fascinated by inventing new solutions to the world around her.

After Hogwarts she traveled to China where she began an apprenticeship with a metal charmer arranged by her grandfather. Some years later she returned to England satisfied she was ready to set out on her own. Lola has supplied some of the most popular shops in England and the rest of the United Kingdom with charmed toys elegantly designed in metal and snitches. While snitches have been her most demanded product due to the popularity of snitches, her pet collection has been very popular most often featuring kittens or puppies that act as if the real thing (without the mess or concern of allergy).

Professor Ye's Charms Classroom is a bit different than the Charms classrooms of the past. While it still maintains its traditional set up of two sets of two rows of benches on either side of the classroom with a short dueling range in the center and a podium at the front, the décor of the classroom is new. In the front and surrounding the dueling range are plants of all sorts. Some are benign flowers, some are poisonous. Some are ferns. Some are mushrooms. And some are magical plants including three juvenile (and potted) mandrakes near the podium. If one did not know better they might think they were in a class about herbology.

In many ways Lola was nervous to start her role at Hogwarts. She had worked only for herself for years and now there was structure to her plans. The classroom was overflowing with plants from the benign muggle plants, to poisonous, and even a few young mandrakes. Despite the green that seemed to blossom as Lola spoke she was not the herbology professor. She was teaching Charms to the youngest of the students of Hogwarts, this period would be her second years. She hoped they had a solid foundation from last year but with so much to learn this year, Lola did not feel it was wise to review from the year before. To do a proper review could take multiple classes and would hardly put her in her students' good graces.

Lola had placed on each place for a student the Syllabus and waited at the podium with a smile. Satisfied her students were settled (except the one or two late students that were always bound to happen in Lola's opinion), she began, "Good morning. I am Lola Ye your new Charms professor. I trust you have a grasp on the wonders and capabilities of Charms and wish to jump right into practical work. On your desks you will find the syllabus but you can review that at a later time."

"Today we will be learning Scourgify. Think of it as a cheat to cleaning your room," Lola began. "Scourgify is a cleaning spell for washing things. Obviously not the most entertaining of spells but the time it can save you will allow you to do things that matter more."

"The incantation is pronounced SKUR-ji-fy and is paired with the following wand movement:"





After demonstrating the movement for Scourgify, Lola waved her wand and in front of each student appeared a tub of dirty dishes she had borrowed from the Kitchens after a small fight with the house elves. "But students should not be washing dishes" was their argument.

Smiling, Lola said, "You may begin. I will be walking around the classroom in case you have any questions. And on a side note, I want all of you to know we will be having next week's class at the quidditch pitch. Dress appropriately."

Second class of the day and Ethan was more or less prepared. Walking into class he would have rather been sleeping in but alas. Heading downstairs one level, the eagle entered the Charms classroom. Talking a seat waiting for class to start. Now the topic of today wasn’t one that he was thrilled about. Who really wanted to clean dishes? “How’d the house elves feel about this?” he questioned staring at the tub of dishes.

Working on his wand movement, Ethan was glad to hear that next class they’d be outside. Class was way more fun that way, and if he could have all his classes outside he for sure would. "Wonder what we are doing next week." He pondered to himself before concentrating on the spell at hand. “Scourgify.” He said with a wand movement. The dish moved but not much else. “Scourgify.” He tried again. This time a dish came clean. Well it was progress.

Callum entered his second day of classes unimpressed. He never particularly cared much for wand waving and he thought he got lost to be honest because the classroom looked completely different from last year and more like a greenhouse and the Professor was definitely not the same one as last year. Some Chinese woman with probably more than just a pretty face considering she was a professor (or so Callum assumed). He sat near the front, slung his bookbag into the seat beside him and pulled out a notebook, cheap pen, and his wand. The professor, Lola Ye, introduced herself and didn't waste their time with introductions or review or any other nonsense. Callum could respect that. She respected their time so that deserved her at least a little respect. Callum was here to learn how to be useful to his Paddy Lot, not waste time or learn a bunch of useless names.

Today was scourgify. Apparently wizards can't be bothered with normal cleaning. Callum rolled his eyes and muttered, "I already know how to clean dishes... all you need is two hands. Even non-magic folk can."

Meanwhile some Ravenclaw brat was crying about the poor house elves not having to clean up after him. Professor Ye stopped by Ethan's desk and said with a small smile, "They eventually saw how kind it was to provide students assistance with their education. Just another way they can serve the school. All they had to do was take a night a little bit easier."

Callum didn't know if he was amused or not by the professor's response but decided to focus on cleaning the dishes the wizard way. He raised his wand and pronounced, "Scourgify." He got bubbles at least. Seems a better first try than the too smart Ravenclaw in his class. So much for Ravenclaws being better at schooling. Callum took a breath, cleared his mind as best as he could, and tried again. "Scourgify." And the dishes got to work starting to get to work washing as if by invisible hands. Maybe he did better because Callum had washed his fair share of dishes in his life, already.

Lola stood on the quidditch pitch with a beater's bat leaning against a jiggling trunk that would later be revealed to be holding a bludger. After a quick count of her students, Lola began, "I trust all of you may be a bit confused on why we are here instead of the classroom. I thought practice of the charm we learn today is more appropriate outside. And, a little fresh air is always lovely."

"So, in case you do not know when I was Hogwarts I was Ravenclaw's quidditch captain and one of their beaters... Don't worry I will be going easy on all of you. I don't want any broken bones on my watch. So, what charm will we be learning? If you reviewed your syllabus from last week you would know it is Aresto Momentum. Aresto Momentum slows or stops an object, hence why we are using a bludger - only one at a time."


"The incantation is pronounced ah-REST-oh mo-MEN-tum and with the following wand movement aimed at the bludger you will attempt to stop or slow the movement of the bludger. You should also note that this charm may be used on another person, or yourself, in order to stop or slow things such as falls." Holding out her wand she demonstrated the movement for the spell.





"Now practice the pronunciation and movement of the spell before making a line. In the meantime I will prepare the bludger and bat," Lola instructed. Wrestling the bludger to the right position to be hit she called out that she was ready for the first student and the practice began.

Lola waited for her students to take their seats to begin. In the center of the classroom was a tall post. "Today we are going back into the Dark Ages. Times of witch hunts and burning humans at the stake. Of course the witches and wizards who were trained in magic were fine but the others... not so much. I will not bore you with a lesson of History of Magic though in that class I hope you are paying attention. This is still charms but we are going to learn Wendelin the Weird's most famous charm."

"Anyone care to guess what that was?" Lola waited for an answer before continuing, "Yes, the Flame-Freezing-Charm. Wendelin enjoyed being tied to the stake and set ablaze. Perhaps it was for the best. She who survived the blaze stood as the decoy for someone else who would get the label of witch. Though I wonder if you are a decoy witch if you are a witch."

"Regardless, today we are practicing the flame freezing charm. In the center of the class I will erect a pole and set it ablaze. I want each of you to take a turn freezing the flame. Note the flame does not actually freeze but instead gives off a pleasant sensation, such as a warm summer breeze or a gentle tickling sensation. After you cast the charm successfully you may stick your hand in the flame to get a better idea of how the charm works."

"In order to complete the charm, wave your wand over your head while stating the incantation and a white light should be given off before the flames are 'frozen' as the charm's name suggests."

Stepping forward, Lola cast incendio on the post and smiling she said, "Let's begin."

In front of each seat was a square of fabric. Once her students took their seats, Lola spoke, "Today we are going to learn diffindo or the Severing Charm. The charm was invented by 1400s dress maker Delfina Crimp to cut fabric and thread easier. As you can guess from the fabric in front of you that is what we will be doing today."

"You may also guess that some more darkly creative witches and wizards have found use of the Severing Charm as well. Carelessness can also yield particularly gruesome results. I will be watching today, very closely. If I see either behavior from any of you I will personally sit you in the corner without your wand, and escort you to the Headmaster after this class. Do not test me on this."

Lola paused hoping the weight of her words would fall on the students before she continued. She hated being strict or a bad guy but she was not so foolish to not know the potential dangers of the severing charm.

Taking a deep breath, she continued, "The incantation is pronounced deef-IN-doe and the wand movement is as so:"





"Allow me to demonstrate." Lola turned and took out a rather overgrown bush. "This poor little guy does need a bit of pruning. Obviously this takes an immense amount of concentration and precision - if I see any of you experimenting on the plants here at Hogwarts, especially mine, you will be in detention until you learn to respect all living things."

Smiling, Lola cast diffindo, a light green light came from her wand, and a branch of shriveled yellow leaves fell to the floor below. "Like so. If you have any questions please ask before you cast. Otherwise please begin you should see a green, pink, or red light when you successfully cast the charm."

Emily found she really liked Professor Ye. She was not only Nic's (from Herbology Club) aunt, but she was really nice and obviously a lover of plants herself. Emily had gone to Professor Ye's office before and had gotten a tour of the professor's greenhouse as she chatted about charms. Still, Emily struggled with charms no matter how much she attended office hours Emily felt. All wand magic seemed out of her grasp and it was frustrating.

Today, was Scourgify. Emily sighed: it would be another disaster. In front of her was a tub of dirty dishes. Emily was not even sure how to clean the plates without magic. She closed her green eyes as she gained focus. Green eyes opened and a small hand raised a cherry wood wand and as she made a "S" shape she directed "Scourgify."

Bubbles began to grow from the tub and plates dipped and dried themselves. Despite the extra bubbles spilling onto the desk and over Emily there was a stack of clean plates. She looked to Professor Ye for her thoughts. It could be worse.
