Teacup Rose Tea gazed out at the sprawling flower fields that belonged to the Rose family. Flower tending during the summer months could be tedious as sweat rolled down the workers' faces and stung their eyes. Yet flower tending was rewarding despite the misery the heat brought. It was late afternoon, a time when the heat was starting to recede. Teacup felt physically tired as he started to finish his current workload. His body showed evidence of a hard day's work: his soft mouth was stained with sap and pollen while his hooves were packed with hard dirt and small stones. Despite the weariness, Teacup felt his excitement grow as day started to shift to night. Soon Melantha would appear, and they would spend the final hours of the day together. Teacup and Melantha's relationship had begun as one between healer and patient. Over time, however, their bond deepened into something more meaningful. Tea was careful to let Melantha set the pace of their growing relationship. He respected her boundaries and understood the trauma she had endured, which had resulted in the loss of her voice. Nonverbally, her body language expressed her emotions when she laughed, argued, and teased him. Her eyes always seemed to convey her emotions, and her soft expression always expressed her love for him. Tea felt warm and comfortable as his thoughts fell on his companion. The landscape reflected the wistful state of his thoughts. Reflected by the soft golden light of the sunset, the flower fields had taken on a dreamy appearance. The western wind now carried the garden's heavy floral scent throughout the valley. Despite the late summer season, Rose was the predominant scent as the Rose family grew their namesake in abundance. Tea’s focus was not on roses but on the field’s other flowers, like the ones that were the colors of Melantha’s white coat and purple-pink mane. The wind made rows of lavender sway and made the lilacs' soft purple clusters dance merrily. The perfume of Jasmie’s fragrant small flower clusters clung to his nose as he trimmed a few stems. Carefully, he gathered cuttings from several types of flowers, resulting in a small bouquet. He wished to express his feelings and hopes to Mel. First, to represent his feelings for her, Lilac signified her as his first love. She is his youthful hopes and dreams put into physical form. Secondly, Lavender represents peace and serenity. Mel often gave him a sense of peace and companionship. He gathered an additional bundle of lavender, as the smell was known to help with anxiety. He wanted her to smell the flowers to help her racing heart when dark thoughts filled her head. Lastly, Jasmine reminded her that her physical and emotional scars did not define her. She was a being of Grace, charm, and sensuality. (W:471)

It was the time of day Melantha looked forward to the most. Golden hour, which made the world seem softer and kinder. Mel mused that perhaps it was Tea’s presence that made the world seem sweeter. As she walked towards Tea, she noticed a subtle blush filling his cheeks. His eyes shone brightly but with a hint of nervousness as he held a small bouquet made of mainly purple flowers. The Rose family commonly used flowers as a symbol of affirmation and love. At night, Tea often whispered the meaning of flowers to her after she woke up from night terrors. Mel knew that purple bouquets shared multiple meanings. Purple flowers represented dignity and respect. The color also represented creativity, love at first sight, or fascination. Individual flowers represented additional messages.
Mel’s smile faded into something softer. For a moment she only held the bouquet in her mouth as she breathed in the mingled perfume. The lilacs carried her back to her unscarred self before loss, when her singing voice had been praised and when it was simple to vocalize her feelings to others. The lavender steadied her, its clean sweetness loosening the tightness that often gathered beneath her ribs whenever someone expected an answer she could not give. The jasmine's sensual smell made her eyes sting, because its message demanded that she acknowledge that all of her, including her scars, were desirable. Her eyes glistened as a wave of thoughts and emotions filled her. The feeling was too much; tears fell, giving her a sense of relief. Her eyes conveyed her feeling to Tea as she thanked him for his gentle, beautiful love. She leaned against his chest, letting him take her weight as she soaked in his presence. He gave her a sense of comfort and a feeling of home.
