Recent changes in Gaia HQ
For a while now Gaia had been a big company working under big strategies and big rules. By big I mean that we as a company has about a hundred people all trying to do what we can to make Gaia a better website. In order for us to orchestrate a large team, many of us end up spending more time managing teams, while the dynamic of how great ideas come from lunch time conversations, or ideas big and small come from chatting with users online become less and less possible.

The result, which should not be surprising to many older Gaians here is that there were many decisions made in the past that upset the community, while many core features are left un-attended. The "just do it" attitude changes to "let's do what majority will agree to do after the next big meeting" attitude.

To make a long story short, it took us a long while to really sit down and just allow creativity roam free and let individuals run wild with ideas and addressing specific user concerns. The recent flash game updates or the heaven forum are some of those examples. There came a point in which we notice that acting like a bigger company comes at the expense of not being able to quickly respond to the need of Gaians as our level of communication also took a toll.

Realizing what we need to do is not enough. When we're a team with a hundred people, saying "let's work like when we have very little people" is not easy to do at all. In the meantime, the cost of keeping a large team was taking a toll.

To keep a large team going, Gaia HQ need a large sum of money. It's kind of simple math but what it all means is that everything lead to what many Gaians called "Gaia was becoming money hungry". This is another aspect that act against our goal of creating a great place to hang out.

This week we've been making a number of changes that are painful. It focus around reducing how much money we need each month by reducing the amount of people within Gaia HQ. Similar to what happened two years ago, it lead off to some very painful decisions and moments.

As we continue moving forward. We vow to place more and more focus towards fixing broken features, building better events, telling more stories, and adding features that are core to the Gaia community.

But that's not all. We also have efforts which will allow us to create games and features for people inside and outside of Gaia. The thought process is simple - imagine if we build a game and we only ask Gaians to help pay for it, we'll need to push much harder and nobody will be happy. Compared to us building a game for both Gaians and people on other sites such as Facebook to also play it and help pay, then the stress over asking only Gaians to keep our teams going will be less. Hope that makes sense.

How can we be sure this is true.. ultimately, you're going to have to lay them off eventually because Gaia is rapidly decreasing. So update the goddamn gold shops, and put a little more money into the system rather than into the Cash Shops please. I think you've forgotten about us and that's why I am begin to forget about Gaia too. sad

It's nice to see that you guys did notice the change to the site. I noticed right away with a few of my friends but when we pointed this out some admins and mods came along saying nothing changed and stop complaining.

But if you go back to the Gaia that everyone loved and many people donated for shouldn't this solve your problem?

I'm glad you guys are communicating with us, but are layoffs really the best way to save some money?
Couldn't you cut back on the meet-ups, or all the cons you go to?

We're a cynical bunch, but most of us DO understand how hard you guys work, and nobody wants the remaining team to be overwhelmed. 3nodding

Thanks for the info Lanzer! I admire the efforts of you and your staff, and i hope they keep working to restore Gaia to all its glory. I would definitely love to see improvements to the site.
I've been on this site for nearly three years and just recently started getting more involved with it. When I did, I noticed a lot of things changed. Games were added, features got taken away, I even noticed that gaining gold became a bit easier.
Pleeeaaaase don't become a pay to be a member or VIP site. I also don't want to see gaia become some freaky warped version of facebook like almost every website is doing now.
I'm glad to see that our complaints are being recognized. Thanks and keep up the good work. Happy Holidays!

I know there is little chance of your reading this, so I'll keep it short:

Though HQ is running on crisis mode currently, everyone needs to take a step back, take a deep breath, and collect themselves. There is a lot of work to do in the near future. Find your center, relax, and figure out your course of action.

As for the recent layoff, there are people on the site that, if asked, would likely work for you on a voluntary basis - at least until the site is back in the green. If you need help, you needn't go further than your own backyard to find it. Ask and you shall receive. You once said that the user basis is the backbone of the company. Well, perhaps it's time to test it's strength.

Times are tough. We all know this. Not all Gaians are willing to accept this fact, but we all know it to be true. We'll work through this - together. Stay strong, stay true & most of all, stay the course.

Good luck & good posting.

I haven't been on for a while, but thanks for letting an oldbie know.

But while I'm at it- I'm from the HQ's area- if you want an intern over the summer for any kind of department you want an assistant in, let me know. I'm available and totally not a creeper. Plus, hay, it's free and willing labor. biggrin

I'm grateful for the hard work you've guys put in over the years. I know some years were quite bumpy, and I've even participated in large SF threads back in the day that addressed those issues, but I can tell you guys are finding the right path to take of late.

I give good tidings and well wishes to those that were layed off.

I'm also excited for old features being reworked and updated. Thanks again Gaia Staff.

Hi. Can we please have the market info back to the way it was back in April of this year? I dont understand what the big problem is that Gaia wont just put it back. It's the buyer's name that used to show up in the vend when someone would buy an item.

If for some reason, Gaia has recently decided that they have changed this due to some kind of privacy thing. Then, please let me offer up an alternative.

Alternative to Gaia removing the buyer's name from the message in the vend:

"Give every user on Gaia the choice to go into options or preferences and select to have vend transactions private or public."

It's as simple as that. Please dont just take that info away from us without giving us the chance to have a fair option for everyone.

Thank You! smile

Very unique also gaia is the best game I've played yet, It would be nice to have a universal report form on here, that way if you have a problem over meebo and such you can report it, truly I cannot find one, I like it when people get along but All I see now days is people harassing one another, and people get hacked.

Best of Luck.

Lanzer, as a veteran Gaian, I kindly ask you, can you please, PLEASE advocate for us in regards to this Gold Generators and how they're being released at an overwhelming rate. If they're only interested in talking business, then remind them of the video game crash of 1983 and how saturating your own market is a bad thing.

Peace dude!
