CLAYTON — A 36-year-old Northmont Middle School teacher was arrested Tuesday on charges accusing him of having sex with a 14-year-old female student on three occasions since May.
Jason Simmons, a former Ohio State University football captain, was booked into the Mongtomery County Jail on two counts of sexual battery and single counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor and importuning, according to the county clerk of courts Web site.
Northmont Superintendent Gale Mabry said Simmons has been placed on administrative leave.
Richard Rose, Clayton's public safety director, said police heard rumors of a sexual relationship between a student and a teacher at Northmont Middle School about a week ago.
The investigation led police to question the 19-year-old female cousin of the alleged victim, and the cousin was able to gather enough information to justify search warrants for Simmons' home in Huber Heights and an apartment in Englewood. A report from a Clayton police detective said the evidence indicated the teacher "did have sexual intercourse with a (14-year-old) middle school student three times in three different locations."
The warrants were executed simultaneously Monday. Rose said Simmons was questioned Monday after the searches, and requested his lawyer be present during the interview. After waiting several hours for the attorney, Clayton police took Simmons to jail.
Mabry said Simmons was hired as an intervention specialist in 2004. Intervention specialists assist "special needs" students who require support to complete their educations.
Mabry said that to the best of his knowledge, the alleged victim was not in any of Simmons' classes. He said Simmons is also an assistant coach in football (defensive line) and track at Northmont High School.
Simmons' personnel file indicates he is married with children, taught in Fairborn before coming to Northmont, and was educated at Wright State and Ohio State universities. His personnel file indicated no problems.
"My impression is that he is one of the nicest people you could meet. This is a shocking incident for all of us," Mabry said.
Simmons played football at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School before going to OSU, where he was a four-year letterman and team captain his senior year in 1993, according to the Northmont football team's Web site. He was an original draft choice of the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars in 1995 and NFL-Europe Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 for the Scottish Claymores, according to the Web site.
