Hey, After talking with my friends about my stories, I decided to post the first chapter of my newest story, Just Another Sci-Fi Novel, here for people. Now, those who know me know that I tend to write about magic and stuff like that. Don’t worry, I didn’t quit. This chapter is more of a prologue than a first chapter, but it gives a lot of information into what has happened at the start of this book. Feel free to read and leave comments if you think I should post the other chapters up here. Happy reading! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
1 The year is 2250, and if you’re a normal person, everything is great. Life couldn't be better. All those stories and "prophecies" about death and destruction due to robots taking over the world and making life miserable couldn't be farther from the truth. With computers and advanced technology everywhere you look, people don't have to do any work if they don't want to. Heck, even the dictator isn't so bad. Wait, dictator? That doesn't sound right. Well, guess what? It is. An ordinary person ran for president, won on charisma, and got the support of the army, which has become more powerful than ever. On a more positive note, there are no more wars, mostly because the U.S. has the other countries quaking in their shoes or boots or whatever. The other countries learned quickly to avoid our good old country all together. Hey, there’s always a silver lining to even the darkest of clouds. And religion? Well, let’s just say there are two kinds of religion now, the kinds that are accepted and the kinds that are outlawed. Yep, I said outlawed. As soon as our “innocent” president dropped the act and declared himself a dictator, the first thing he did was pass a law that forbids certain religions. Which religions, you ask? Well, to put it bluntly, every single one. Those who are caught practicing any form of religion face life in prison or worse, depending on the circumstance. His excuse? That religion is on the verge of tearing our grand ol’ nation apart. The sad thing is, everybody believed him. The idiots. Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself. But you have to admit, they kind of went along with it, hook, line, and sucker. After all, why not? I guess in their eyes, things are pretty good right now. Truth be told, our dictator is keeping all the promises he made when he was sworn into office as a president: He promised to save the forests, and he did, by using technology instead of paper. In the ten years that he’s been in power, I have not seen a single paper used for writing things down. He promised to get rid of the issue of overcrowding, and he did, by putting into action a law that says no family can have more than one child. If there is a second child born, they are automatically put up for adoption. What they do with those poor kids, I don’t think I want to know. He promised he would provide people with good-paying jobs, and he did, by assigning people without jobs to work as scientists (if they‘re smart enough) or assistants to those scientists. That’s what both of my parents do. Dad’s a scientist for the government (he got good grades in school, I guess) and Mom’s his lab tech assistant. He promised he would support every child’s education, and he is, by ensuring that every child goes to college, even if they don’t want to. Because it’s ordered by the government, going to college is free. Any type of schooling after that, however, like law or medical school is up to you to pay for. Sounds a lot like the Roman Empire, doesn’t it? I guess this guy really paid attention in his history class. Speaking of classes at school, let me make one thing clear on this topic. Every school in the country, and I mean every, is like a boarding school and a private school combined. It doesn’t matter what level, pre-high (a blend of elementary and junior high school) or high school. Everyone has to wear a uniform, I’ll get to that a bit later, and you stay at the school Monday through Friday. The only times you get to see your parents are on the weekend. We don’t get any time off for Christmas (no religion, remember?) but we get a month off for summer break. By now, I bet you’re wondering where the Constitution is in all of this. After all, it should guarantee us the basic rights that this dictator has taken away. Well, there is no Constitution. Yep, you heard right. Following his announcement as dictator, he tossed out the Constitution and any other laws and documents that allow us those basic rights we used to hold so dear. “We need to let go of the past and look to the future” was his excuse. Not that he needed one; no one was in a position to stop him. So, let’s recap. The U.S. has become all-powerful, at the expense of the things it used to stand for, our dictator and the government are allowed to pry into our lives whenever they want, and the worst part of it all? The average person is oblivious to all of this. Fortunately for those of us that are smart enough to figure it out, there are people out there trying to stop it. Not really a resistance-type of group, but those who are trying to keep the old ways alive.
