WATER RAFTING
I was on top of a raft with nothing to keep me in, or to hold onto, going down a level six out of ten rapid. Right at that moment I regretting going. What if I fell out? I couldn’t do this! But it was too late as we were already on our way.
Let me start at the very beginning of the story. It was a sunny day in June I had been out of school for awhile, and my mom suggested we take a trip to Sunriver. Awesome I thought, so a couple of weeks later there I was sitting in our car on my way to Bend. My Mom was driving, my brother and my Dad were talking, and what was I doing, well just kicking back and thinking how great rafting was going to be. How little I knew what I was in for!
By the time we got to Sunriver it was time for dinner. So after unloading at the hotel we went to eat at a Thai place in town. I got noodle soup. It had chicken and cilantro and warmed me up, it was delicious. After a good meal we went to sleep on our very first day of vacation. I awoke to the sound of the T.V., later my mom told me to get up so we could go eat breakfast. We drove to I.H.O.P I got a waffle with fruit on top, running down it was strawberry sauce warm and thick. We all ate until we were stuffed, only one more day until rafting I though excitedly.
The rest of that day, my mom and I went shopping, got our nails done, and met my dad and brother for dinner. They had gone golfing. This time we got pizza for dinner at a place called Cibelli Pizza. I got cheese pizza, and the rest my family had garlic chicken. Later that night, when we got back to the hotel we rented a movie on On Demand. We watched RV the comedy. I couldn’t sleep that night knowing that we were going rafting the next day. Haven’t you ever been really excited like on Christmas where it takes forever to finally fall asleep? That’s what I felt like.
I woke up to my mom telling me to get dressed so we could go rafting, yes I thought. After I changed and got ready we left. We drove to this building where we were supposed to wait until a bus picked us up. Meanwhile I looked in the gift shop that they had. I was beginning to lose patience though. I was really anxious too. Where the heck were they? Suddenly we heard the bus that was picking us up, so we walked up the stairs and there were seats in the back. As we drove I looked out my window to see miles of thick green forest, the cool breeze just slightly blowing through the open window chilled my body. Birds were happily tweeting, there was the sound of the river flowing, the floor of the forest was prickled and covered in pine cones with some vegetation. We could all smell fresh flowers blooming; I could see little drops of dew twinkle on each of the petals, like looking in the sky on a clear night. I felt so excited to be out in nature. It is one of the many reasons I love Oregon.
Before I knew it the bus came to a stop and we were there. We all got our life jackets on, and met our guide. His name was Jeff. He said that he was happy to be rafting with us other than a group of screaming children that were standing next to us. We got settled in the raft. It was large and rubbery with seats to sit on. Then we started to paddle. Finally we came to our first rapid. Water was splashing and we were going up and down at high speeds. The wind blew in my face the thrill was awesome. I had so much fun. We went on three more runs. Then we paddled to another one. Our guide stopped in front and said that this one was the longest and hardest. My brother saw some people riding on the ledge of the raft in the front, and asked if we could. We both wanted too. He said sure, we started to move forward.
Back to the beginning of the story, I had got on the ledge and everything was set. As we started to move, I began to feel unsafe sitting on the ledge. There was nothing to hang onto and the rapid grew louder and louder the closer we got. Just like the sound of my beating heart. I was about to call out but for some reason I just frozen. It was then I realized it was too late.
We gained speed almost immediately, swerving to every side, leaning up and down, twisting and turning and going faster and faster. It was exhilarating. My heartbeat was going up as we fell down a little and began to pick up speed again. Then it was over, I had survived. I made it down in one piece and it felt absolutely awesome. I knew from that moment on if I had backed out, I would have never lived it down, and would always wonder what it would have been like. I knew what it was like now, and I am going to remember this pleasant memory for the rest of my life.
