i play netball. i would even go so far as to say i play netball well.
but it is a goddamn dangerous sport. people have been so injured they can barely walk for the rest of their lives, let alone play again.
i lucked out. while i was playing last saturday i was hit in the lower back [right on the spine] by a stray knee from my opposition who was leaping into the air.
completely accidental, but neither of us realised it at the time [seeing as it happens to me all the time] and i continued playing.
after the buzzer for the end of the game [half and hour after the initial injury] i walked off, having had a terrible final quarter and not having ran or broken for any passes at all because my back hurt so.
my team were slightly angry, but when they realised i was hurt pretty badly they all forgot about it.
it turned out it wasn't broken [after many extensive x-rays] but severely sprained, and i can do no physical exercise for a week, i have to take stairs slowly and put both feet on each landing before continuing, and to take it slowly, and never to run for a while.
i'm also vaguely hooked on panadeine.
so there you go. don't do netball, especially representative, unless you are prepared for serious bitchiness, injuries galore and multiple aches and pains [my knees creak like a seventy-year-old because of reps training].
and cold baths. you can NEVER forget an ice bath. good for the muscles. BAD FOR THE BRAIN.
so take my word on it. back injuries suck. and don't try to be the hero like i did and play on, because it just made it worse.
but keep playing, because it literally will be the light of your life.
