Start to a random story I thought up. I dunno if it's just gonna be a short little one-shot thing, or if I'll try to turn it into a full-blow story. We'll see what happens... I just wanna jot this down before I forget it.
Never in the many years he'd been coming to this secluded little stretch of beach, nor in his entire thirty-two years of life, for that matter, had Nathanial Smyth seen anything quite like what he was looking at now. He'd seen many strange things during his time as a fisherman, but none of it compared to the creature lying on the sand not ten feet from him. It was a creature said to only exist in the stories told by half-insane sailors who had been out at sea far too long. Merely a hallucination brought on by heat and lack of clean water. However, no matter how many times Nate rubbed his eyes or pinched himself, the image didn't disappear, nor did he wake up and realize it was all a dream.
This creature was real. This mermaid was very real.
There were no other words for it. What else could one call something with the upper body of a young woman and a tail instead of legs? Nate carefully stepped a little closer, transfixed by the bizarre creature. She appeared to be either asleep or unconscious, lying partially on her side with her head resting on one out-stretched arm and the other arm draped over her waist. Her mass of long, seaweed-colored hair only just covered her bare chest. The waves gently lapped at her fish-like tail, which he suddenly realized had a net tangled around it.
He dared to take another step, keeping his gaze on her as he tried to set his fishing gear down as lightly as possible. His efforts to remain quiet, however, proved to be in vain when her large eyes opened and she lifted her head slightly, surprise evident on her delicate features as she stared at him. Nate just stared right back, unsure what to do or say.
Eventually, her expression became sad and pleading. "Please... please help me," she said with a soft, melodic voice.
Everything about her was just so beautiful, Nate couldn't help but give her a comforting smile. "Don't worry, I'll help you," he replied, crouching down to retrieve a small boning knife from his bag. The mermaid tensed visibly at the sight of the knife and watched him warily as he approached, shifting slightly as if ready to flee at a moment's notice. "It's all right," he said gently. "I'm not going to hurt you, I promise."
A small smile appeared and she seemed to relax.
Aaand, I think that's all I'm gonna put for now, because that's basically all I have for the beginning. XD I know what I want to happen in the middle/end of this scene (there's going to be mature content, lol =X) but I'm not exactly sure how to lead up to it just yet. Sooooo..... yup.
