This is a continuation of my story
Jack Stalvo lay in his bed in his tiny apartment which over looked the city. It was early six am when the phone rang, its ring shattering the silence that was from midnight to seven am, when the whole city began to pick up its life blood and continue beating on. Jack woke up and picked up the phone."Hello?" he coughed out, he had spent the night before losing himself to the bottle. "Jack its me Gary-" the man said, Jack spoke before gary could finish" Gary, you call me at six am to chit chat, now th-" Jack was cut of by Gary "Jack, theres been a murder, some broad got her throat cut outside of Saints park, your our leading investigator. We need you-" gary was once again cut off by Jack. "What the hell do you mean NEED me Gary, You need me because some whore gets her throat cut and she's found dead so you want me, to come and look at the body tell you the obvious and then have your b***h boys down at the precinct write up everything I said? No ******** you. this is my day off Gary". There was an acquared silence, Jack felt his heart strings pull." Sorry, I'll be there in half an hour, let me get myself together" He let out a sigh,"Gary I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you like that its just tha-" Gary cut him off "Yeah I know, they constantly drag you away from your days off, I know what thats like saddly missing Marie's piano concerts, or Micheal's basketball games. I take no joy in that Lillian knows that. Its part of the job, I'll see you in thirty" Gary hung the phone up with a click.
Jack slowly rose from his bed as though he were some great creature coming back from the dead. He knocked several bottles out of the way, some empty, some drained half way. Jack walked to the bathroom, every step agonizing. Reminding him that his younger years of limber muscles and athletic grace was leaving him. He flicked on the bathroom light, only one of the four light bulbs worked. He didn't care. It meant he saw less of what he hated to see, himself. Jack had once been a prime police officer, in his early twenties he had chased down a drug dealer for 10 blocks, and then tackled him down arresting him and only being slightly winded. Now his body had become older, it had been 10 years since that day. Now his hair hung limply over his face, it had been brown, but now it was fading out. He sighed and began to shave his face. His eyes were still the same average brown. They never changed. He stood rather impressively, at six feet and an inch. He wasn't stocky or rail like. He was a healthy medium. He undressed and stepped into the shower, and turned the water on. It felt good feeling the beads of water hit his skin. It was clenseing for him. If only the water could clean his mind, if only. Jack finished his shower and dried off and got dressed, in a pair of jeans a white shirt, some boots, and a black jacket. He grabbed his car keys and walked down to the car port.
Jack got to Saints park a few minutes late. Gary saw him and immediately confronted him. "Jack where were you? what took so long!" Gary huffed. Gary was not very imposing. Only standing five feet and eight inches, being heavy set, and balding at the age of 47, not someone to fear, but he was an excellent marksman. "I said I would get here" Jack said rubbing his eyes, the sun burned them even though it was early. "Jack you doing alright?" Gary asked. "No, the same nightmares" Jack said ducking under the yellow tape. "Dammit Jack you should go see a head doctor or something, otherwise your going to get haunted by that. I know this great psychatrist, Her name is-" Jack held up his hand to stop Gary. He was tired of Gary telling him what to do. " Gary be quiet. I don't want to her your s**t, let me see this girl and begone" Jack said. "Hey I look out for my friends and-" "Co-workers I know, blah blah blah, right now lets get this done" Jack said impatiently. "Right Jack, well she looks to be about early twenties. Blonde hair" Gary said "Eye color?" "Unkown" "What the hell do you mean Unknown? Blue, green, brown, hazel? What eye color?" Jack huffed out. " Her eyes were ripped out Jack, her throat slit, eyes removed and get this he took her hands" "Okay so let me get this straight." jack said stopping. "No hands, or eyes. Throat slit, and dead" Jack said looking at the body, he looked her over. She seemed young, had a family that loved her. Maybe she was going to college or working at a diner. Who knew, save for her. Jack croched down and asked for a pair of gloves, and was promptly hand them. He examined her body carefully. Some of her hair had been ripped out, he face contorted in a grim face. Her death had been slow and whoever had done it would do it again. Jack felt something rise in his stomach. He closed his eyes and shook his head. "Jack you alright?" Gary said "Yeah fine, coronor on there way?" He said. "Yeah" Gary stated. "How long?" Jack asked. " five minutes, you want to go grab some coffee or something?"Gary said. "Yeah sure why not" Jack said as the coronor drove up. "My treat" Gary smiled.
Jack and Gary walked two blocks. Gary talking all about Lillian's cooking. Micheals SAT scores, Marie's upcoming fourteenth birthday party. Jack merely nodded the whole time. Eventually they got to a coffee shop. Jack ordered his black. he never saw any reason why people ordered anything else. Savages he thought. Gary ordered the same, Decaf. "Jack are you dreaming about her?" Gary asked. "Who?" Jack said. "You know who, Annie? Ann? Am-"Gary couldn't finish. "Angela, and yes I am" Jack said defensively. "Jack it wasn't your fault. She was lost anyway" Gary said plainly. "Well looks like I'm lost too, maybe I might do the same. Maybe I am tired of this s**t." Jack snarled. "Hey jack I know you've been through hell over her. There wasn't a damn thing you could have done. Life just worked out that way. She died, and you saw it. In all my years as a detective and officer, all 15 years I have seen alot of death. When I was in the army I saw more. Life and death work hand in hand. Beleive me I have seen hell too, but you go on and live life. Get yourself a wife, maybe a family. I did that Lillian and I got married right after I was out of the army, and now I have two kids. and I love them to death. Listen Lillian has a friend you-" Gary was about to finish when jack interjected. "No" jack said smuggly "No, because your a jack a**. Your as stubborn as one" Gary huffed. "No because I don't want to burden anyone" Jack said sipping his coffee. "hmph I say no because your a stubborn a**" Gary said boldly and lit up a cigerette. "You know lillian will bust you" Jack said smileing. "No,she'll bust you, if you don't stop being so stubborn and live. Besides You have to stop smokeing and drinking." Gary said smiling. " I only drink, you smoke" Jack said plainly with a slight smile. "Yeah I know I just tell Lillian that" Gary smiled and took a long puff. "Well Gary, I have to clean up my apartment today. Landlord is coming by, so I need to make sure he doesn't take anything." Jack said as he got up taking his coffee with him. " Stagowitz is still clean? Damn I never thought I'd see his meth addictedself still alive or even not strung out" Gary said recalling a time when Miles Stagowitz was using large amounts of meth and had to go in for detox. His building showed it, so did his body. Gary watched as Jack left. He was truly concerned about two things. the first was this killer, and the press. The second was Jack, what was he going to do with him?
The beast roused and stirred. He felt his heart beat and pulse. He snarled and closed his eyes and began to dream of his evil ways to get back at everything.
