Lanzer's Journal
Many had posted in the forum asking about why Gaia needs more money with all the sponsorships. Thought I'd make a small blurb about that.

Today Gaia generates money mostly through user support, though at the same time banner ads and merchandising also bring in some additional money. The money then goes to the bank and help pay for cost of running the site, and help pay everyone in the office for member support and site development. From developers, artists, admins, and others, Gaia has a really large staff count, and there is always this balance been the cost and how can we support it.

Sponsorship is an important part for Gaia mainly because it is our chance to be able to get more developers. It's the simple relationship where if we can earn more, we can hire more people.

That's the small blurb, now here's the big blurb. smile

Every week we sit down and look over all the features that we want to make, and all the features that we have to build. Most of us actually spend time fixing old code to make them run well when more people hit our site. For every website, there must be a set amount of people making sure it runs smoothly. Another big chunk of people are involved in the battle system, and with whatever developers left, we make sure that someone is making current features better, someone to improve ease of use, someone to work on events or quests, and someone to work on brand new projects. There are a lot more details such as planning and bug fixes that takes up time also.

Unfortunately, with most people placed in fixing code and on battle system, for each of the other categories, there can only be one or two guys. Reason is because our development team isn't that big, and how many people we can have depends on how much money we can earn.

There are a lot more features that we would love to make, and often it gets really frustrating knowing that there isn't nearly enough people to make things happen.

We actually spend a lot of time making sure that the sponsors we work with are companies with great products and services that most users like. While an equal amount of effort is spent making sure that nothing is intrusive. We go the extra mile making sure that things are done tastefully.

Our goal is to double the number of developers in a year or so. Sponsorship is definitely part of what will make this happen. I look forward to the day where we can release new features on a monthly basis, and be responsive to everyone's requests and suggestions. whee

All this time and money spent on the Battle System worries me. Do you really think those who will be its predominant users are the same people who support it?

Do you think you'll attract (or lure away from WoW or City of Heroes, etc..) older working male users who will donate you money? Developing such a system is going to be an ongoing concern, and I'm really worried it will syphon off all the other resources.

What I'm saying is are adult users like me subsidizing a giant failure, from a business point of view? Not that I'm going to necessarily stop sending you my $50 to $70 a month eek but I'd like to hear a bit more about how all these resources that could be going to fixing glitches in things I spend my time doing, like making Word Bump viable again.

I'm getting a bit worried, since the value of MC items has dropped dramatically; there are gold sinks hastening this that don't apply to me, since the vast majority of your users who DON'T pay for this site make it very uncomfortable for us working adults to get involved in events. And the next best money-making endeavor to donating, Word Bump, has NEVER worked as intended and is now just plain crap.

I really worry that the long-promised battle system, like the long-promised return of the Messiah, is either a crock or a baaaaaad idea. gonk

As far as I'm concerned, once Gaia storyline gets rolling and the Battle System gets its debut there isn't going to be anyone complaining about the intensity of having something to do other than collect pixels. Sure, all of Gaia's features aren't running smoothly, but neither are WoW's, Ragnarok Online, hell, not even My Space. Sites have problems, it's something we've got to deal with.
Keep up the wonderfull work Gaia Community : D !

I understand the reasoning behind the sponsors and ads and congradulate you on such a successful and fulfilling business.

I'm glad your doing your best to find sponsors that the members will like instead of the highest paying ones.

I hope you guys continue doing as well as you do, and that Gaia will continue to grow and expand and become even better then it already is.

I'll continue giving $20 a month to help as best I can because it makes me feel as though I played at least a small part in helping to keep gaia going strong and getting better.

Lanzer I have a few questions about things around Gaia Online.

1. When will the battle system come out? And what will the battle system be like?

2. I can't seem to get into fishing anymore and I really would love to go fishing again but I can not, can you fix that for some people who can't get into stuff anymore?

3. I know that you guys are working on the new battle system and all but would you kindly work out some game stuff like...fishing or if I leave an room it won't let me back in until my avitar leaves that room?

4. What is up with the new market place? It looks better then the old one but the new one confuzes me. eek

All in favor of a petition for no new features until older ones are fixed say"Dum didee!"

Seriously though, I love this site, and I really appreiciate all the new features and how battle system is finally being worked on alot, but I would rather have no new features for a year or so if it meant that the old ones could get fixed. I have seen alot of buisnesses grow and thrive until they suddenly collapse, because they concentrated too much on the future to fix problems that had been present for a while. I'd hate to see Gaia have the same fate. (Although most will probably flame me for saying that, and will go on to say how Gaia has been growing and becoming bigger and more profitable than ever before. This is probably true, but the same applied to ones I have seen collapse in the past.)
