To My Late Dog, Nicky:
You used to sit and wait for me,
I used to be your child,
You used to watch me with sad eyes-
School wasn't a happy thing for you,
But when I came home you barked hello,
And then you'd lick my hand,
Is it always so hard to lose your best friend?
I remember the long car trips,
And how you'd put your head out the window-
Ears flying in the wind,
Oddly, you seemed to think you were running,
Wondering why you normally couldn't go that fast,
How could life ever be so cruel?
My dad never knew the last time he visited-
Would be the last time he ever saw you,
You were always like his adopted child.
When I had to tell him,
He could hardly even speak,
I had to hang up shortly after,
I couldn't make any noise come out of my mouth,
No dog like you ever could have deserved this.
I've never known fate to be so cruel,
To rip a friend out of your life,
And though I'm glad you're out of pain,
I'll always miss you so.
I'll never forget how the sunlight reflected off your fur-
You were a fallen angel,
With a pure soul.
