I stood still and looked at the rows of seats in the room. Every single person in the room was staring at me, which made my stomach squirm. I looked down at my feet.
“This,” Mrs. Telly said, “Is Kat. She is from Japan, and she has perfect scores on all subjects. She has a collage level in reading…”
“What a nerd!”
I looked up. A tall boy with red hair wearing a baseball cap in the second row was whispering to a pretty blond girl wearing a jean skirt and a cool matching top. They both giggled.
Suddenly Mrs. Telly looked at me.
“Kat, did you hear me? I asked if you could tell us about yourself.” She said. My face got beet red.
“Sorry, Mrs. Telly! I wasn’t paying attention!” I turned to her and bowed. “It won’t happen again! I promise!”
People started to laugh. I looked at them, confused.
“Kat, you don’t need to bow. We are in New York, not Japan. Now, please tell us about yourself.”
I looked at her. She nodded as if she was trying to say, ‘c’mon, tell us…’
“I…. I….” I started trying hardly to ignore the people giggling. “… read a lot… I like… to… to…” I stopped because of everyone giggling. Mrs. Telling gave everyone a look then turned back to me.
I gulped. “… I like to study….” Then I stopped. I was done talking. I couldn’t take more embarrassment. “Thank you for that Kat.” Mrs. Telly. “Now you can sit over there, by Mikey.” She pointed to the redhead tall boy with the baseball cap. And went over and sat and Mrs. Telly started the first lesson.
