Dark Nights
The story of Victor Donovan, the vampire hunter.
Prologue and Chapter 1
Prologue

At first glance, you’d think that this was a normal city. It is a bustling metropolis, filled with thousands of people. Business is always booming with hundreds of corporations earning their share of the vast wealth of the city. Even the northern parts of the city have beauty to them. Wonderful houses in the east section, a beautiful city park in the west, and to the north, a wondrous forest lush with green. But… when night falls, the city becomes different…
Downtown has always been full of them… It’s no surprise when you see a body lying around. In fact, it’s a given that the left side of their neck will have two fang marks in it. Vampires are no myth; it’s why people shouldn’t be out at night. It’s sad really. Innocents are preyed upon like cattle. The worst part is that no one has challenged them…

Chapter 1

A young girl is running down the street. It seems that someone, or something, is chasing her. As she runs, water from the pavement ripples up; it had rained a few hours ago, during sunset. Probably a bad omen… She ducks and weaves through the alleyways, trying to avoid whatever is chasing her. In the distance, a man with a black leather trench coat steps out from a corner, his cold blue eyes shimmering in the dark. The woman immediately spots him; the terror in her eyes grows.
She sees a corner, and thinking it would provide refuge, runs into it. This turns out to be a mistake: dead end. The cold brick of the back wall will not protect her from he pursuers. Two men step out from the corners; both of them having those icy blue eyes.
“You think this one will be enough for the night?” asks one of the pursuers.
“Hmm,” replies the other, “This one looks a little small, but it should be enough.” As they inch closer, they smile, revealing that they have the trademark of a vampire: two glimmering white fangs in each smile. The fear in the young woman is too much to bear. As she faints, her body slowly falls, sliding on the brick wall behind her.
“It is too bad though…” said the first, “…that such a pretty face has to go to waste.”
“Such is the way of things. The ring of life cannot be broken,” replied the second.
As they approach the unconscious woman, a slight breeze forms. The first one reveals the woman’s neck. “Just be sure to save some for me…” spoke the second. The first’s fangs reveal themselves, ready to partake in the feeding. As he prepares to take a bite…
“That’s enough.”
Both of the vampires turn around. Perturbed, they glare at the man who spoke. He was wearing a long dark trench coat, similar to theirs, along with a metal necklace bearing the Japanese symbol of justice. A broadsword was on his back, protected by a brown sheath. Even though he was wearing the hood attached to his coat, his eyes shown through with an emerald green that pierced the night.
“Hmm,” said the second, “I believe we have a…unwelcome guest.”
“Just another puny human wanting to die…At least let me finish eating…” As the first went down to bite the woman, a flash of metal appeared in the corner of his eye. A metal throwing knife embeds in his jawbone and pins him to the brick wall.
“Guess I’ll have to dispose of you before I have my meal…Pity.” The second revealed a short sword under his coat and charged. Another flash of steel in the darkness, and the vampires hand along with the sword falls to the ground. With claymore in hand, the swordsman plunges it into the vampire’s stomach. As the second falls, the first manages to free himself from the wall.
“You are going to suffer for that…” He lunged at the swordsman with inhuman speed. But speed does not help, as the swordsman dodges to the right and slashes the vampire across his chest and brings his violent assault to an end. With both vampires down, the swordsman cleans and sheathes his sword and makes his way to the unconscious victim. Making a sign with his hand, he then lightly touches her forehead. As if by a miracle, the woman regains consciousness.
“Wha…where…where am I?” she asked, dazed and confused.
“You are safe from harm. The vampires that were after you are no more,” replied the swordsman. He then proceeded to help her to her feet. Only after she saw the two bodies did she then realize what had happened to her attackers.
“But how did you…” she started to ask.
“It does not matter how they fell; all that matters is that you are safe.” As he said this, he started to walk away.
The woman staggered forward. “Wait…can I at least know your name?”
“It’s Eisenfaust” he replied.
“Well…Eisenfaust…thank you for helping me back there. But I want to know, what exactly are you?”
“A vampire hunter.”
