Histoire d'Aodh Finvarre Flann: How Fionnbhar Brennan became Aodh Finvarre Flann

Things weren't going well for Fionnbhar. His mother, with whom he had always been very close, had died of illness only months before, shortly followed by his darling wife and one of his four children. It was with their deaths that he found himself doing something he knew his mother and the faint whisperings of his father would disapprove of.

Beatrice had been raped and murdered; his youngest daughter Aoibhe violated and hanged. He did not know what he had done to provoke such acts, but they broke him, and perhaps that was what had been intended. He had, at first, seeked help from an old family friend - the mighty King Arthur - but found himself pushed away and slandered by Merlin, who claimed that Fionnbhar had come to corrupt the King and drag him into his vile acts.

The fair-headed man had been aghast. His mother had told him many times of a nearly fraternal connection his late father and the king shared, and couldn't comprehend that perhaps he couldn't fall back on this himself. He had always been told that if he was in need, his king would help. 'How easily men in power break their word,' Fionnbhar thought on more than one occasion.

He knew that if Arthur would not help bring his wife and daughter's murderer to justice, he would do so himself. He gathered what he thought he would need - a bow and quiver full of arrows, an iron hunting knife, and a small ration of food.

It only took him a few days to track down and kill the men that had taken his wife and child away forever, but his act of "justice" was not seen as such by others, and he was put to death. But he could not rest, could not be with his Beatrice and Aoibhe, for Merlin, sly trickster that he was, cursed him to remain a spectre until he did an act that preserved life instead of destroy it.

But Fionnbhar was incoporeal, and could touch nothing, influence nothing. His sole ability rested in whispering to those he cared for while they slept. He was useless, but spent his time, which was endless ghost as he was, watching and protecting his children - and their children, and so on so forth.

It was centuries later when he was finally able to free himself of the curse he had been placed under.

Áine Caoilinn Flann was a beautiful woman - she was one of his descendents, her family having had moved to Ireland in the 5th century. She married Ailill Flann, a full-blooded Irishman that worshipped the ground she walked on. She was loved greatly, but wanted children more than anything else in the world. Fionnbhar was very fond of her - she knew, one way or another, that he was there and would always speak to him about whatever she could think of. He was glad of this, as no one had spoken to him for many, many centuries. Áine could see him nor hear him, of course, but she knew nonetheless.

He was estactic when he found out she was pregnant - it was all Áine had ever wanted, and she practically bounced with every step. But it was short lived, as she miscarried only a few weeks in. She did not give up, however, and went through the same thing four more times, growing more and more morose and upset with each lost child.

Fionnbhar was in shambles as he listened to Áine cry. "Why?! Why does this keep happening to me?! I just want a child to love, to care for! Why am I cursed to be a death-trap? If I am to lose another child, then why am I even living?"

There was no question in his mind. Áine could not kill herself, he had grown too fond of her. For a sixth time, she found herself with child. And miracle of miracles, the pregnancy lasted to term, the child apparently very healthy and stable. Fionnbhar was relieved, but it was short lived.

On the day of her son's birth, there was a complication and the child was strangled by the umbilical cord. Áine did not know, and never would. The child's soul had already departed, and Fionnbhar found himself watching in horror as the dead child was born. He wasn't thinking straight, couldn't stand the idea of Áine dying, and did the first thing he thought of - he possessed the shortly dead child and forced life into the body. The doctor saw the cord, and the choking sobs the child was making, trying to get in a breath because of Fionnbhar.

A few moments later, the cord removed, and Fionnbhar, trapped in the body of an infant, let out a loud, deafening wail.

Áine heard that cry, and knew she'd finally gotten her wish. She named the child Aodh Finvarre Flann - Finvarre for the ghost that spoke to her in her dreams. She did not know that she had become his mother, and spent many years wondering what had happened to the spectre - and why her son seemed so much older than he was.

And so Fionnbhar Brennan became Aodh, though his memories of the last millenia and a half remained with him. At first, it was difficult to relearn how to move - so long without a body left him unprepared to actually have one, especially such a young one. He accepted the new name as his own, and attemped to think of himself as Aodh instead of Fionnbhar.

He tried to act as childlike as possible, but found it difficult and instead opted to act as he had before the death of his wife and daughter so long ago - as a joker, a short attention spanned individual. He had gotten a second chance to live, and his personality began to shine through once again.

School was no problem - he had witnessed history first hand, and math was laughably easy for him despite having had no experience outside the classroom with many of the concepts. It was strange for him to interact with people again, and Áine noticed that despite his out-going nature, he was careful and nearly always told only half-truths. She knew something wasn't quite right about him, but it would take many, many more years before it finally dawned on her why Aodh was so strange.

He had few friends during his school years, but many admirerers. He had been surprised to realize that his new body was nearly identical to his last - the only difference being a freckle beneath his ear that he had not had before. It was as though he had meant to be back, alive and well, and perhaps he was - he didn't dwell on it.

Aodh decided it was time to take a trip. In his entire time as a ghost, he had never once left the Isles of Great Britain or Ireland, and he felt that he was long overdue. College gave him such an opportunity, and he applied at the American universtiy, NYU. His high grades and scores made him a shoe in, and he left for the U.S. a few weeks before the start of classes.

He had one problem, however, the dorm he had thought he'd be living in had been over-booked. Rather than deal with the hassle, he decided to find someone that needed a roommate.

A stroke of good luck and one of those "Roommate wanted!" flyers later, Aodh met twin brothers in a Starbucks a few blocks from the hotel he was staying in. They were insistant on paying their own rent, and had told Aodh about their father's rich boyfriend and his offer to pay for their flat. He'd been a bit surprised by that, but didn't question it. As it was, the twins were having problems paying their rent on financial aid alone, and needed at least one roommate to help offset the costs.

The younger twin, Morgan, who had dyed bright purple hair, sat cradling his coffee in one hand and his head rested on the other, "It's a nice apartment. Mom helped us find it, so it's in a pretty nice location and close to the main buildings. Big too, so if you didn't want to see us you probably could avoid us."

The elder twin, Tobias, took a large gulp of his frappacino monstrousity and nodded, "And it's rent controlled, thanks to the fact that Sebby was able to negotiate it with the landlord. Gotta remember to suck up to him big time."

"Rent control, eh? Sounds good to me. I just need a roof over my head that doen't cost me $150 a night." Aodh grinned at them with a shrug.

So it was in a Starbucks that Aodh met Morgan and Tobias, and a week later moved into the apartment. It was easier to act normal around them, though he never revealed his secret - he couldn't afford to, even if he trusted them completely. The belief in the supernatural had faded over the years, and Aodh didn't want to risk losing them as potential friends so early on.

Things were going well for Aodh - he practically attatched himself to Morgan's hip, and for the first time in a very long time had friends. He was pleased, and felt as though nothing could touch him.

Until he met Sebastian.

Woo! Cliffhanger, lawl!

Was his first meeting at the theatre? *bounces around* And this helps my little write up!!

*grins* Belief in the supernatural faded huh? Haha. It seems to be running rampant in all of our characters at least a little bit. *grins* I think the most normal one is Melissa.
