At my school, we got Friday off this week. Unfortunately, teachers are sadists—and I’m beginning to believe that my teachers specifically are out to get me, since none of the people I’ve mentioned it to have nearly as much homework as I did this weekend. I had 9 and 1/2 pages to write between three different classes. Because I had already totally blown off all of Friday and the first half of Saturday, and had promised six hours of my time to Leeayre on Sunday, I finally decided last night that I was going to have to take drastic measures…
My all-night study session:
5:15p.m.: Woke abruptly from a deep nap to the decision that it was about time to get serious about the homework, because 48 hours too late is better than nothing at all.
5:16p.m.: Was sucked into the dark vortex of no return that is Gaia.
7:22p.m.: Was just about to get serious about the homework, when both of my parents and anime-club-boy all started chatting with/text messaging me at once. Seriously, within seconds of each other, like it was planned.
7:56p.m.: Finally got them all to leave me alone, and went fooding. Bought an apple and two energy drinks at the campus store, and a burger and fries at the Burger King across the way. I asked for a small fries but the man gave me a medium; I shouldn’t, but I love him.
8:00-8:30: Ate. I LOVE French fries, which is horrible, I know. And mustard. But not together. No, I put ketchup on my fries, and it takes six packs of it for me to get through an order of medium fries… And then there’s the energy drinks. Had my first-ever taste of Full Throttle at 8:14, and I swear I was wide-awake by 8:19. Also, if you put your ear up the can, you can hear it fizzing. Do sodas do this? Maybe they do, but I don’t think they do it nearly as much; this you can hear from inches way. It scares me a little, as does the horrible aftertaste that I could not begin to describe even if my life depended on it, but nevertheless I think I love energy drinks, too.
8:47p.m.: Got serious about the homework.
9:33p.m.: Got online to look up information on Edith Wharton… and got sucked into the dark vortex of no return that is Gaia.
9:50p.m.: Dragged self kicking and screaming back to the homework.
11:22p.m.: Setback—was nearly finished with my English essay, then checked my e-mail to find a letter from my English teacher which subtly yet significantly redefined the assignment. Tell me, does this woman have no clue what she’s doing, or is it just me?
11:25p.m.: Tossed back the last of the first energy drink, cracked knuckles, and began anew.
12:00p.m.: Midnight came and went. Opened the second energy drink, and wondered how late the campus store stayed open in case I needed another.
1:50p.m.: Triumph—finished English essay and sent it off to Leeayre for her, er, reading pleasure. Or, you know, not. She asked for it. Started working on the anthropology journals.
3:00a.m.: My dad got up, and asked over IM, “Are you still up?” Could have cried.
5:00a.m.: Still had 3 and 1/2 pages left, but by that point had been awake for 21 hours, and decided to call it quits.
Since writing six pages of anything in one sitting is pretty impressive for me, especially when I have access to high speed internet, I consider the night a success.
