Dark Nights
The story of Victor Donovan, the vampire hunter.
Chapter 4
Chapter 4

“YEEEEEAAAAAAAAGH!”
A blood chilling scream came out of the distance. Victor heard the woman's cry and sprang into action. He ran down the streets as fast as he could until he reached the alleyway that the scream came from. When he entered the alley, he saw a woman being cornered by a man.
“You there!” Victor yelled. “Stand where you are! Do not move any closer, or I shall be forced to deal with you.”
The man turned to face him. “Go away, you pesky human. I don't have time to play with you.” His cold blue eyes met Victor's brown eyes. Only then did Victor realize who his opponent was; or rather, what his opponent was: a vampire.
“A vampire! I guess you have evaded me, but no longer!” Victor opened his coat and pulled out his sword from before. He removed the blade, then put the sheath on his back. “I will eliminate you here and now!”
“Ah... a hunter... So you are the one that eliminated my competition. You have my gratitude. And for that, I will end your life quickly and relatively painless.” He charged at Victor with inhuman speed. He did not have a weapon in his hand, but a strange energy surrounded it, making the hand blade-like. Victor saw his attack and blocked it with his blade, however the blade did not cut his opponents hand. As the two squared off, the woman took the opportunity to flee the scene. Victor and the vampire fought for a few more seconds before they backed off of each other.
“Your skills amaze me, human.” the vampire said. “I am surprised you can keep up with my speed.”
“Your technique... Where did you learn that?” Victor demanded.
“Oh this? It runs in the family. Do you like it?” the vampire asked sarcastically.
“It leaves me to ask this.” Victor replied. “Are you from the Sinclair family?”
The vampire started laughing. “Not that it matters to you, but yes.” He bowed, mockingly. “I am Ren Sinclair, the eldest of my family, next to my father and mother. It is a pleasure to meet you.”
Victor lowered his head. “I never thought I would find you. Now I can avenge my family.”
“What do you mean?” Ren inquired.
“In the name of William Donovan, for all the crimes you have committed against my family...” He raised his head with piercing emerald green eyes staring at his target. “I will bring you to justice!” Victor charged at his opponent with blazing speed.
“What is this!” Ren managed to dodge the lethal charge, the sword barely grazing his clothes. “His speed has doubled. What is going on?” Ren thought. Victor relentlessly attacked his target. The sword in his hand appeared like a blur of steel in the night. Ren barely kept up by blocking the sword with his hands, shrouded by his technique. He backed away from Victor. “No human can do this! Who are you?” he demanded.
“I am the last of my family.” Victor said solemnly. “I am the son of Edward Donovan, whom your family killed. My name is Victor Donovan, and I will claim my vengeance!” He rushed his opponent again. Ren held out his hands with his palms facing Victor. In a flash of light, a yellow bolt of energy streaked towards his opponent, however Victor deflected the bolt with his sword.
“Nice try, monster.” Victor said calmly. He sheathed his sword. “My turn...” Victor held out both of his hands. “Eat this! HAAH!” A blue colored shockwave erupted from his palms. The wave was too large for Ren to dodge, instead he shielded himself from the blast with his palm technique. The blast collided and there was a flash of light. Before Ren could react, Victor rushed up to him and slashed his abdomen. Blood started to pour out of the wound. Ren staggered back and placed a hand over his wound.
“You...you'll...you will pay for this!” Ren said, wincing with pain.
“It ends here, vampire!” Victor raised his sword to deliver the finishing blow. He would get the vengeance he wanted, no matter what.
“Not today!” Ren raised his hand and blinded Victor with a flash of light. When the light died down, Ren was nowhere to be seen.
“Where...where did he go?” Victor looked around angrily. “Damn it!” He slammed his fist into a building wall. “That b*****d got away...” He pulled out a cloth and wiped the blood off of his sword. “I'll be looking for you... Ren Sinclair!”

It was around 3:30 when Maeve arrived at her house. It was a large house in the forest to the north. It was two story house, but the house itself was very wide; almost like a small mansion. She went up to the large front door and entered.
“Hey, I'm home!” she yelled. A little girl ran out from one of the side rooms. She was 10 years old and had long platinum blond hair.“Hey Maria!” Maeve said happily. “What did I miss while you were away?”
“Nothing really, just our parents walking around. Was your shopping trip successful?” Maria inquired.
“Yeah, I would say it was,” she replied, looking off in the distance.
Maria was suspicious. “Hmm... I would say that there is something that you are not telling me. Care to tell?”
Maeve looked around, then leaned close to her sister. “Can you keep a secret?” Maria nodded slowly. “All right, I'll tell you; but not here.” They walked into a side room with a couch, two chairs, and a fireplace. They sat down on the couch.
“Okay, don't tell anyone about this. Not mom, or dad, or even big brother.” Maria nodded. “You remember how I told you yesterday about the guy that attacked me?”
“Yes Maeve,” she replied calmly. “You described the scene, as well as your rescuer in detail.”
“Gee thanks for reminding me.” Maeve said sarcastically. “Anyway, that guy that saved me, well... he was back in the park at the same spot. He was playing an ocarina next to the statue. The music he played was like a mystical melody that pulled me towards him...”
Maria rolled her eyes. “All right, go on.”
“Sorry.” Maeve replied. “Anyway, he was there, so I want up to talk to him. We talked for a while. His voice was like a soothing call...”
“Sister...” Maria said impatiently. “Please continue...”
“Fine. Anyways, we started talking, and after a while, I asked him to come with me while I ran my errands in town, and of course, he said yes. We went to all the different stores that I wanted to go to, and we talked all the way. At around three, I said I needed to head home, and we parted ways.”
Maria sighed. “Well, It sounds to me that you are quite infatuated with this person.”
“Geez, you make it sound so horrible.” Maeve replied.
“Well, technically, it is a bad thing considering that he isn't one of our kind.”
“I know,” she said. “But still, that doesn't mean he's a bad person.”
“You know, if you like him that much,” Maria said with interest. “You could always turn him into one of us...”
“Maria!” Maeve said sternly. “You know very well I don't attack humans, only animals!”
“I know...” Maria said apologetically. “But you know, you do have to feed on a human's blood every six months. Instinct will take over if you don't.”
“That's what the blood reserves are for. So I don't have to...”
As soon as she said that, someone burst through the door. It was Ren, extremely tired, still clutching his chest. He stumbled into the side room where Maeve and Maria were sitting.
“Ren Sinclair! What in the world happened to you?” Maeve asked, but before she received a response, she saw Ren's bloody shirt. “Oh my God! What happened? Are you all right?”
“Sister...” Ren looked at her with anger in his eyes. “Have you forgotten our heritage? We can heal from virtually all wounds! Maybe your time spent with the humans made you forget what you are: a vampire!”
“Thanks Ren, for reminding me...” Maeve said disgusted. “Forgive me for caring about my big brother... You can really be a jerk sometimes.”
“Whatever... Where's Father and Mother?” Ren demanded.
“They are in the study...” Maria said softly.
“What do you need them for? So you got messed up. Big deal. You yourself said that you can recover, so why bother?” Maeve said casually.
“Again, little sister...” Ren stated. “How can you be so naive? No human could ever do this to me!”
“So another vampire messed you up for taking his kill?” she said jokingly.
“No...” Ren replied, as he started walking up the stairs. “A hunter did this...”
“What?” Maeve was shocked to hear this. From what she knew, hunters only existed in vampire horror stories. “Wait, Ren!” But before she could catch him, Ren was upstairs headed for the study. Maeve looked at Maria with a confused look in her eyes. Hunters don't exist... It's not possible...

Ren walked to the study. It had a large door that was closed. He knocked twice, then entered slowly. He walked to the middle of the room, then knelt in front of two throne-like chairs. “Father, Mother, I bring terrible news.”
“What is it Ren?” the woman asked from the darkness. “You look like you have been in a fight.”
“It was not just any fight. It was with a hunter!” Ren replied.
“A hunter? Are you certain?” the man asked from the dark.
“Yes, Father.” Ren replied apologetically. “What is worse is that the mission failed...”
“What mission?” the father replied. “You don't mean...”
“The mission to eliminate our enemies. It has failed. Apparently one survived.”
“That is not possible! I watched Edward and the rest of his pitiful family die!” the father said angrily. “If you are lying, I will slaughter you myself!”
“You watched him die, but you forgot one of his sons.” Ren said worryingly. “He managed to survive. And because of that, I was injured by his hand! What's worse is the fact that he is different from normal humans! He can use energy techniques similar to our own! His natural agility and speed is doubled!”
The father stood up from his chair. He glared at Ren with a piercing stare. “If this is true, then we must be careful...”
“What shall we do, Father?” Ren inquired.
“I will think more on this. In the meantime, go recover. I will summon you when I need you.”
“As you wish, Father.” Ren bowed, then got up and left the room. The father sat down again in his chair.
“Peter,” the woman said, worried. “What shall we do about this mess?”
“I am not sure, Carerra.” Peter replied. “But what I do know... is that the son of Edward Donovan must not be allowed to live. For if he continues to live, we will all be doomed.”
Standing in front of the door, listening to the conversation was Maeve. Her trembling hand covered her mouth. In horror, she walked to her room. “This isn't true. This can't be happening! Victor... No! I refuse to believe it! But, can it be possible? Is Victor... a vampire hunter?”
