Forgotten Memories...
...of Past and Future
Chp. One Part I
"Where are we, Annie?... Annie?... Annie, where are you?" Renee asked. She'd been wandering through the forest aimlessly for hours looking for Annie. She had stopped to take a nap and when she woke the last thing she remebered was being at the mall with Annie. This can't be happening, it has to be a dream, please be a dream.-Renee thought. She pinched herself in an effort to wake-up. There was only one problem, she wasn't asleep. "Ow!" she yellped. I wonder what this place is. Okay, not important. Where on earth could Annie be?-she searched her mind frantically, for the details on what happened to Annie and why she was in this forest.

Renee stopped searching, all she found was a really bad headache. She got up and walked over to a small lake in the middle of the clearing where she had fallen asleep. She looked into the water, expecting to see her reflection. Instead she saw her memories of the past eight hours. Everything suddenly made sense, except how she and Annie had gotten here in the first place.

Renee's head was spinning and she felt like taking another nap. However, the longer she stared at the memories in the still lake, the more she dwelled on the idea that this forest was enchanted. That somehow, the lake had absorbed her memories as she slept. She wondered what what would've happened if she hadn't waken up when she did. She couldn't sit there anymore, it was too boring for her.

Renee got up and walked into the thick forest surrounding her. A feeling of dread washed over her as she stepped from the clearing. Why is it so gloomy in here-she thought. The forest was much darker than she remembered it. Renee turned to look back at the clearing; it was still bright and sunny over there. What sets the rest of the forest away from this clearing.- she thought. Then she remembered the lake that had shown her memories. Maybe that's what kept the clearing seperate from the dreary looking forest that surrounded it. Renee almost completely forgot that she was looking for Annie, as thoughts of an enchanted lake filled her head. A loud, earpiercing scream interrupterd her thoughts.

"Annie," she whispered to herself. Renee took off, running in the direction the screams had come from. She came to another clearing much like the other one. Except that instead of lush and green, the grass was ash black, the lake dried out, and the trees barren. The lake was relatively the same size and trees were in the same position. She heard, soft crying. Renee looked to where the sound the had come from. A girl was kneeling by the dried out lake, her legs and arms scratched up. She leaned over the empty lake, her ashen hair hiding her face.

There was no mistaking it, that was Annie. "An... Annie, are... are you okay?" Renee said slowly approaching Annie. Annie lifted her head and stared blankly at Renee as though she had know idea what she was saying. "Annie," Renee said in a calming tone.

"Re...Renee, is... is that you? I... I'm sorry. This all my fault, neither of us would be here if we hadn't snuck out. I'm sorry Renee, please forgive me." Annie said in a soft voice.

"It... It's okay, Annie."

"But it's not. You don't know this place, Renee. I do, I've been here before."

"You have?"

"Yes and this is the worst place to be wandering lost. Did you happen to see a clearing like this one, except it's like, the exact opposite?"

"Yeah, why?"

"That's are only ticket out of here." Annie said, urgency evident in her voice.

"Are... Are you sure? There's really only one way out of here?"

"Afraid so, Renee." Annie got up and pulled Renee up with her. "Show me where it is and I'll have us outa' here by sunset."

"Alright follow me." Renee grabbed Annie's arm and pulled her along as she ran. Renee stopped. "Wait, how come you don't know where this clearing is, if you've been here before?"

"I-uh-" Annie stammered. "It's the forest, it absorbs memories. It replaced mine with memories of the future, and yours with memories of the past. that scream, it was because I had foreseen a terrible future. I'm sorry I had to do this Renee, but it's the only way that you'll ever understand this world."

"What do you mean?" Annie began to walk backwards slowly disappearing until she was nothig more than a white mist. "No, no,noooooooooo!!!" she shouted. "Annie, come back you have to help me get out here. Annie, Annie, please, help me.

"Riiiiiiiiiing, riiiiiiiiiiiiiing." It was Renee's alarm clock. That was the third time this week that she dreamt about that forest. She had already filled five leather journals with stories of the place. She called it, 'The Forest of Forgotten Memories, Past and Future.

Renee woke up screaming the last few words of the dream. She got up and threw the covers off of her. "Dammit, why can't I just forget this damned forest. It's just imaginary. Isn't it?" Renee could often be found talking to herself lately. She stood and made her bed mumbling about these dreams. Then she went to her closet. Renee grabbed her usually outfit out of the closet and put it on while talking to herself.

She wore the usual, a wite shirt with a black collar, a short black skirt and black shoes. Grabbing her backpack and newest journal, Renee ran out her bedroom and down stairs.
