Dementia Nouveau
A new kind of crazy.
Sample 1
I glared around my living room as though it was personally at fault for my boredom. I couldn’t help it. The forcibly cheerful green walls, unnaturally comfortable maroon sectional couch, and vintage chairs my mother had miraculously found at a yard sale were mocking me.
‘How could you be bored?’ they were saying. ‘Everything you need is right here! Internet service on a laptop! Satellite television on a big screen television! Stacks of books and mangas to read! Life is great!’
“******** you,” I mumbled and turned back to the T.V.
Flicking buttons on the remote I blankly searched all 254 channels we were currently subscribed to, including all eight channels of ESPN. When they started to repeat, I felt the walls closing in around me. The once spacious room was now only inches from my body. With a growl, I wrenched myself out of the chair and bolted toward the front door, grabbing hoodie and keys off the counter.
The wind chilled me, causing the violent trembling to start. Cursing my weaknesses, I shrugged on the jacket and zipped it all the way up so the hood could protect my face. I jumped into the driver’s seat of my beloved red pickup truck and started the ignition. Heat blasted onto my feet. I relaxed instantly and savored the moment, forgetting my worries and aggravation.
All too soon however, I was forced back to reality when I remembered how much gas my truck was eating. I put the blasted gasmuncher into reverse and flew out of the driveway.
The drive into Scottsburg was never long. Especially since I was notorious for driving at least ten miles over the speed limit. I got into town in record time (cutting the previous record of ten minutes to nine). At the second stoplight, I got caught and had to wait. During that time, I wondered what I should do. I could go see Matt, my boyfriend, but he was at another friend’s house tonight. I could go to McDonalds. Digging in my purse, I pulled out two dollar bills, a ten I needed for my drama club dues, and a penny. Sighing, I reasoned I wasn’t that hungry anyways. As the light turned green, I set course to the only alternative: Wal-Mart.
