Irony
Ok, I'm obsessed with Wicked, and I've listened to the soundtrack over a hundred times...says itunes...but it's been more. If you ever listen to the soundtrack, it's amazing...however! Irony and foreshadowing are making my stomach flip with sorrow. It's really incredibly unbearingly sad if you understand the irony and foreshadowing, more than what is obvious. Obvious, would be the song Thank Goodness...Glinda KNOWS Fiyero loves Elphaba, but can't be with her, and Glinda wants Fiyero to love her so she keeps him with her, even though she knows it's wrong. This leads to her letting Fiyero go safely with Elphaba (she didn't condemn him to the citizens of oz, it was the soldiers) and the reprise of I'm Not That Girl.
*I'll be posting more Irony in wicked later, it's crazy*
Anyway, in the opening: No One Mourns The Wicked, Glinda sings:

And goodnes knows
the wicked's lives are lonely
goodness knows
the wicked die alone
it just shows
when you're wicked
you're left only
on your own.

However, she found out earlier in her life it was she that was left alone. Is it karma from being a spoiled brat in Shiz? She changed though, and was 'good' as stated by the wizard. Elphaba 'died' but it was a trick and Fiyero *after getting his brain from the wizard as the Scarecrow* came back to tell her it worked. They lived happily ever after, but never told Glinda for fear the whole thing would start again, they both loved Glinda, and vice versa. Glinda was left alone, her best friend died, her love died... Glinda's duty is to keep the citizens of oz happy so could the purpose for her singing this so passionately be her actually singing this about herself? I think so, and if you saw the show, I think you might understand what I'm talking about a little easier. This show is based off of guilt, hate, and love... It's wonderful
