The Star's Achives
Made for: Role Play Profiles, Poems, and Stories
Role Playing Concept:

You know how when you write a story, you create this little world of words and description? You create a world that lives, in a sense, a world confined to the linguistics that describes it.

There are some people, however, who have taken this theory a grand stride further. They have gained such a sense of perception and immersion of the written word that they have been able to make what they write a completely self-contained universe, where a whole living world acts and breathes beneath the words. Writers become not just writers, but gods. They do not necessarily write words on a page, they control the story from within it by using a kind of coded language that they call ?Author?. To the inhabitants of the story?s universe, it?s incomprehensible jargon, and yet they bend and follow it to the letter, as they are meant to, and all that happens is transcribed into the paper form of the story. Some authors even grant the story?s world autonomy to let the characters carry the story themselves, without the author?s guidance. These are called ?free reign? stories.

Not only can stories be written like this, they can even be read like this. This allows nonfiction to achieve a new level of educational property, since you would learn a lot more about something by being there then by reading about it. As you will undoubtedly imagine, writing is one of, if not the most popular occupation in the world. ?Written Universes?, as they have been called, have profoundly affected the world as a whole.

But what if something were to go wrong? With all these separate universes all over the place, even though they are merely acute immersion of prose, it is hard to believe that they could remain problem-free forever. Since the beings and activity within them are real and sentient, they cannot be kept blind to their purpose and reason for their existence.

Surely enough, the security of the Written Universe begins to crack when the protagonist of one author?s story gains a faint understanding of the Author language. In a panic, the author abandons his story and doesn?t return to continue it, in fears that his continued presence might worsen the problem.

A month passes, and the author sees that no progress in his story has been made. He has figured that what happened was a fluke and it wouldn?t happen again. He tried to continue the story, but during its resolution period, the protagonist suddenly gained a full understanding of Author and refused to obey him. Terrified, the author abandoned the story altogether and destroyed the manuscript. By all accounts, that should have completely ended the problem.

However, a month had passed, and the author had become wakened by strange noises. He?s gotten up to investigate, and sees the protagonist of his story stumbling about, dazed and confused. The author tries to talk to him, but the protagonist sees him as hostile, so he strikes him down and escapes.

The author awakens the next morning; it looks as though the protagonist?s trail had gone cold. The author tries to keep this under wraps, but soon the protagonist is seen by the public. Since he displays the distinct characteristics of a literary character, it could be assumed that, indeed, the boundaries of a written universe have been shattered, and a character has escaped into this dimension.

The implications of such an action present enormous possibilities, all of them bad. Literary characters are as powerful as the story allows them to be according to the confines of the universe they were created in, and now that a character has been able to escape the confines of such a world, without an author to control him, his power could climb to inconceivable extent.

And this could be the result of just this one incident. What if this becomes a regular occurrence? What if villains from stories start escaping and wreaking despotic havoc upon the world? Laws could not confine them. Weapons could not kill them. The structure of a literary character has not been fully explored, they might not be able to be killed, wounded, or stricken out of power unless if the story?s writer demands it. And now that he is out of his creator?s power, what can be done? And let?s not forget nonfiction character, or nay, even symbols and arithmetic! Imagine a logarithm storming your house and killing your family! Admittedly, that?s an absurd scenario, but we?re not in a position to dismiss absurdities.

Even if this worse-case scenario doesn?t come to pass, crippling problems could still arise from this. Has the Author language been decoded? Could it no longer hold power to literary characters? Could writers no longer be gods of their own universe? Could stories just fly off the handle with no conceivable way to know how they would conclude, if they would conclude at all? All literature as we know it could be destroyed if this should happen!

The people have decided to take action. All fictional works currently being written have been immediately halted, and book burnings to eliminate the links to the Written Universe are flaming up across the planet. Not a single book is being written or read; therefore the entire civil structure has been revamped almost overnight.

But that still doesn?t solve the problem of the escaped protagonist, who has learned of what he has caused, so now he has gone into hiding. World governments seek him out to put a quick end to his problem to see if they can kill him or at least put him into solitary confinement so that he would cause no more problems.

But another group, written cosmologists, has other plans for what to do with the protagonist. They study the Written Universe to try and make sense of its scientific implications, and now that a piece of it has crossed over into this plane, this would be a huge coup for them. They wish to find the protagonist to study him and figure out how he was able to escape.

And let?s not forget the author, the catalyst for all this madness. He too wants to find the protagonist, simply because he?s his creation and he is both concerned for his safety as well as the safety of society. As his brainchild, the author figures that he is the only one possible who even has a ghost of a chance of trying to control him, and he wants to know both why this happened and how it can be stopped.

To summarize, a universal boundary has been shattered, and the universe has positively no idea of what implications this could have, and all the conceived possibilities are nothing short of apocalyptic. The one link to all this chaos is on the lam, and the entire world as a whole is after his blood.

And only one man, his lowly creator, is the one who can hope to replace order, both to his world and thousands of others his world has made
