heart
my essay
ya, it really sucks. and by the end it's just rambling anyway.

Quote:
Of all the books I have read, none of them has had as great an effect on me as Hamlet. I connected to Hamlet because of the intensity of everything in the play. Through the characters’ passion, the tragedy of the scenes and the betrayals of trust, Hamlet had an effect on me.

I can relate to the characters because they are very passionate, as am I. One of the most inspirational characters in the play is the main character Hamlet. His passion is shown in the scene of Ophelia’s funeral, when he says that “forty thousand brothers/could not, with all their quantity of love/make up my sum.” Another character who is particularly passionate is Laertes. He continued to try to avenge his father, when he didn’t really want to kill Hamlet. The third most passionate character is Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother. Even though Hamlet said cutting words to her about her “hasty marriage,” she still loved him deeply. These passions often get the characters into conflicts that end in tragedy.

The tragic scenes affected me by making me appreciate my friends and family more. The scene where Laertes comes back and sees Ophelia, gone mad, is very tragic. It made me appreciate the fact that my brother is the way is he is. When Hamlet kills Polonius, it shows that life can be extinguished in the blink of an eye, and by the slightest misunderstanding. This made me feel very grateful for not having had anyone close to me die. The last scene that affected me the most was the scene where Hamlet is conflicted with himself about what he should do. It strikes me because he only has one real friend who he can confide in, and I have so many. Many of the scenes are focussed around a betrayal of trust.

The betrayals of trust affected me because honesty is very important to me. The most shocking betrayal was that of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The fact that they could betray their “friend” and go behind his back is a sobering realization, because although it happens all the time, it never happens to me. Claudius’ betrayal of his brother also greatly affected me. It’s surprising to me how his greed and hunger for power could overpower the love he had, if any, for his brother. Ophelia’s betrayal of Hamlet struck me as well. She let her father control her and she obeyed him, forsaking her love for Hamlet, which I could never do and find almost unforgivable. These betrayals affected me.

When we were reading Hamlet in class, I really enjoyed playing some of the parts because I connected to it so well. Hamlet really affected me, through the characters, the scenes, and the betrayals, and it did me nothing but good.
