My advice to you would be to go into the shops and buy all the starter clothes you think are cheap. They're only 5 gold apiece, and if you mix them up (not using them in sets) nobody really notices they're starter (I like the glam guy trousers myself, they fit well on a girl avi). Also, there are cute clothes that don't cost a lot, like the basic skirts.
Do any quests you come across (the ones for movies and such) you usually get a free item from them!
You can quest for an MC, I would recommend starting for one that costs about 10K or so. There's lots of nice ones that don't cost too much, and if you use them well they can be a good status symbol, plus they're fun! Also, there's some cheap EI's that have finished evolving...Tama's basket, Green Corralus Egg, Pora Ice, all cute ^^.
Just post and play jigsaw and other games, you'll have some gold in no time! Good luck!
