Balance of Heart and Mind

A powerful mind is a spiritual tool which many in my generation have forgotten to acquire. When spiritual leaders speak of personal growth, it is generally assumed that the heart is what needs improvement. While a strong heart may be necessary for a happy and peaceful life, a powerful mind can limit the emotional trauma that one must suffer, leaving behind a light and carefree heart. The basic philosophy behind this comes from the old saying, “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” The ability to divide and separate your thoughts from your emotions will leave room for improvement in both your mind and heart.

To live your life fully dependent on a strong heart will lead you to believe that your life will always have highs and lows, and that whatever happens, your strength will carry you through to the end. The will to fight and avoid this emotional trauma is lost when this position is assumed because without a powerful mind to aid in avoiding this trauma, you are, in a sense, taking the fetal position and allowing the world to toss you around like a ball in a schoolyard game. You may come out okay in the end, but there will be scars and bruises to show for it.

On the other end of the spectrum, a powerful mind with total disregard to the heart, will hold you back from the positive emotions that a human must have to achieve total happiness. To bury yourself in your studies and to ignore your emotions, is to sit on the sidelines and simply observe the fun that you could be having. This position in life is once again like taking the fetal position, and letting others control your destiny. While you may not experience the pain of someone who is dependent on their heart, you may also never experience the joy of life that can be felt by listening to your emotions.

Consider both the mind and the heart to be reservoirs designed to catch the rain that comes down throughout your life. Without the ability to distribute the excess rain evenly, one reservoir will surely overflow causing a great flood. To know when to use the mind and when to use the heart, is to have complete control and understanding of your life. A perfect balance between the heart and the mind will allow you to live a happy and productive life while still being fully aware of, and experiencing the positive emotions that are required to achieve total happiness.
