"Alright class, today we'll learn some simple manipulation spells."
It was another humdrum day in Akari's life, but he enjoyed his work. Every day he got to see slightly different faces from the day before (though whether it was from the gaining of knowledge or the spells gone wrong, he sometimes couldn't tell).
He went on to teach the class about how to trap the spirit of a cloud stallion in a bottle and then slowly draw it back out, giving an example with the large bottle he had on his back. He told them that if they drew it out too quickly, it could grow vengeful at them and wreak havoc in their lives. But if they drew it out slowly (meaning in about a month), controlling it as it came out, it could be a very valuable and reliable companion. He showed them first the sealing technique, followed by the extraction technique. The class 'oohed' and 'aahed' as he slowly traced a line through the air, with the smoke following it and eventually taking shape into a full-grown cloud stallion.
Meanwhile, the three fox spirits (Yoake, the fire fox, Yugure, the shadow fox, and Yuki, the snow fox) sat by and watched the class, sometimes Akari. Yugure saw a few students sleeping behind their textbooks, which he found strange because Akari specifically told the class not to buy any textbooks for that very reason. He silently glided behind them, becoming a shadow as he moved and popping back up in solid form behind them. He then let out a quick, sharp bark, alerting Akari of the slackers.
Akari looked to the source of the disturbance and sighed. "Yes, Yugure, I saw them. I was going to ask them to stay after class to try not to embarrass them, but I see that doesn't quite fit your description of punishment," he said. "Kigita, Aniki. Please stay after class."
Aniki and Kigita, the two girls that had until then been sleeping, looked at him dazedly. It was Kigita who spoke first. "Huhwha? Oh, okay Akari-sama." Aniki merely looked between first Yugure, then to Akari, then to Kigita. She then shrugged and went back to sleep.
Akari stared for a moment, then sighed. "The rest of you may go outside. Class is over for today." The class got up and left, not even bothering to look at the two on their way out. It was all too common for Aniki and Kigita to be held after class, so they didn't really pay attention.
Akari waited until the entire class was gone, save for the two girls. He then slowly walked to the window and sighed. "Why do you two do this to me?" He asked.
Aniki frowned in her sleep, not wanting to talk. Kigita looked down at her lap, not wanting to face her teacher. Akari turned to them and asked them a second time. "Why do you do this?" He walked slowly towards them, Yuki following right behind him. The cloud stallion, Fuasta, was already back in her bottle. "I try to make the lessons as interesting as possible," he said, "And yet you continue to sleep in my class. Why? Is it not interesting enough?"
Aniki sat up straight, her eyes still closed. "We're tired, Akari-sama." She said with little emotion. "Class starts at midnight, and goes for two hours. How can you expect us to be awake?" She opened her eyes and glared at him. Akari didn't flinch. "Not all of us are night owls, like you. Some of us have classes in the morning as well, and not all of us get enough sleep."
Akari merely blinked and turned to Kigita. "And you, Kigita?" Kigita looked up at him, but didn't say anything. The truth was she was bored out of her mind. She didn't understand the lessons, and had given up hope of even passing. She didn't even know why she came to the school in the first place, she didn't have any special talent.
Yuki walked up to Kigita and looked her straight in the eye for a moment. She then opened her mouth and said, "You're a very intelligent person. Why can't you see that?"
Kigita was shocked. She had never heard any of the foxes speak before, or had her mind read. She simply stared at the fox in dumb confusion. Aniki, however, spoke out almost immediately, saying, "Hey, what about me? Am I some kind of genius?"
This time it was Yoake who spoke, from beside Akari. "We cannot see what is. Only what could be. You, however, seem to have lost the will to excel. You have learned the time reversal spell, have you not? Then why do you still complain of having little time to sleep?"
Aniki turned and actually glared at Yoake. "Because we aren't supposed to use it in school! We--"
Akari cut her short, saying, "You're also not supposed to sleep in my class, or have textbooks to try to hide it. Or study for other classes in my class, unless I specifically say so. And yet you still do it. Are my rules less important than the school's?"
Aniki turned away, her cheeks flaring. "Well, we can get in serious trouble from the school! You can't do much, honestly."
This prompted a wide-eyed stare from Kigita. She knew Aniki was outspoken, but to their teacher? She could only imagine what kind of punishment they might get for this.
Akari stared at the two for a moment, then pointed to one of the large, bluish-white pearls on his sash. "Girls, do you know what this is?" They both shook their heads. "And this?" he pointed to the tassel on the end. Again the girls shook their heads. "And you probably don't know what the material that hols it all together is, do you?" The girls shook their heads again, Kigita growing more and more anxious and Aniki getting more and more irritated. Akari smiled. "Come with me, please." He then turned and walked away, leaving them sitting there.
The girls looked at each other, then to each of the foxes, looking at Yugure last. He gave them a canine smile and said, "You really think you have a choice?"
That prompted the girls to get going, quickly following their teacher.
