I’m currently a College student learning Video Game Design and Development. I didn’t always want to do this, though.
I went through a lot of choices about what I wanted to do with my life before I finalized on this one. I once wanted to be a Fire Fighter, but that was just a child's dream and I mean child. One of those first career dreams you dream up in preschool. Looking along the same line of work I then peered towards Police work, but that proved to be more complicated than anticipated but it did lead me toward the Security field later down the road. I took a variety of Martial Arts and Learned about Law all in High School. The longest time I spend involved a single art was when I was in Judo. I absolutely loved it, and all throughout my life, ever since I could remember; I researched, learned and dove into the life styles and arts of the Ninja. I started learning from my father, but I’m getting a little off-topic here.
I tried my hand at the Visual Arts for a while, but sadly I was only good at the hand-to-paper art rather than the entire art spectrum, history and fundamentals of it all. I even tried Architecture because it was a form of art, to me. Digital Arts is the most popular these days, especially for animation... which was another thing I looked into. I was hoping there was still a market for analog animation. Once again I was wrong.
Wanting to do something with my hands, I eventually wandered over to Construction where I initially landed a job in Roofing. That didn't last long, either based on the fact that I eventually found out I was mildly allergic to the sun. I learned this long after my roofing job and after going to many, many temp agencies looking for work. The bright lights in those buildings tired me out.
My condition kept me at home and inside a lot. Being in the position that I was in, I played a lot of video games and on my computer I played with an RPG maker program... a lot! That was where I suppose my calling was. I enjoyed playing them. I enjoyed making them and I was always interested in being a computer programmer but never had the chance to pursue that. I could think of only one thing stopping me, now.... I never graduated from High School.
What prevented me from graduating is another complicated matter in itself. I worked my hardest at getting my diploma and a friend of mine sparked the idea of the G.E.D. to me. After months of research, I learned that the program isn’t a scam or a sham after all and would be a worth-while investment. So I completed it. I press the idea to anyone I know that hasn’t complete High-School or has dropped out the idea of the G.E.D. because there is no way that it cannot benefit them. It’s a proven fact that High-School Diploma Holders/Graduates earn a considerably higher salary in careers than those whom hadn’t graduated at all.
What really got me to where I am was a complicated mess of relationship issues, family problems, lack of work and problems obtaining work, and last but not least, no hint of a future. I was pretty down about the situation and oh-so confused in life until I saw an advertisement on Television advertising exactly what I was looking for: A great learning experience, rewarding career opportunities and lastly, promise of an internship upon completion of the course. I couldn’t resist. I picked up the phone and called in right away. Classes started soon, too so I didn’t want to wait anymore to actually DO something.
So here I am. Writing out a short version of my life’s story and enjoying what I’m doing. I’m only a month into my program, but I can tell it will not only be growing, but I will be growing to like it even more.
I can’t wait to become involved in the industry.
