#26- Mother
Ahisutah picked her teacup up off the table and took a long, deep sip. She then lightly put her cup back down with a small clank.
“So, let’s continue our tale, shall we?” She said with a small sigh, patting her knees.
“Yes, yes! Tell it Obachan!” Whitey-chan squeaked with excitement, bouncing up and down as he was sitting on the floor, “I like hearing about my real mother!”
I stared at Whitey-chan. It was like he didn’t have a care in the world, always enjoying things. He seemed so happy all the time, even with his mother not here with him. Not taking care of him like a real mother should.
I blinked, noticing what I had just realized. I directed my attention to Ahisutah.
“Ahisutah—,” I started, wanting to ask a question but was cut off by her.
“Please, Ayumi, you’re in my house now, sipping at my tea and sitting on my furniture. Would you be more of a dear and call me Granny from now on? When you call me by my name, it seems like you are nothing but a guest. But Ayumi, you must know this; you are far more than but a guest.” Her tone was gentle and kind. She didn’t seem mad at all.
“O-oh, of course,” I stammered, “if that’s fine with you.”
Ahisutah nodded, leaning back into her seat, “So what were you about to say, my dear?”
“I was about to… Ask another question,” I said hesitantly, looking down at Whitey-chan who was fidgeting with the feathers on his own wings, pinching them with sheer interest, not listening to our words at all. He peeked at me for less than a second before going back to examining his feathers again.
Ahisutah looked at me with waiting eyes.
“Uh,” I said, “What happened to Whitey-chan’s mother? Why isn’t she with him now?”
Ahisutah’s eyebrows rose in understanding.
“Ah,” Ahisutah said, “That’s where the tale of the angels is residing now. I will continue to tell it and I do hope your question will be answered as you listen to the tale.”
