The Anniversary (Ch.4)
Chapter 4- The Anniversary

I finished cleaning the sweeping medium-sized hut, and sighed as Maya avoided doing the chores, that, did I mention, she made herself? I went outside to see how dark it was

"Maya! You ditcher!!" I yelled to no one in particular

I half expected someone to show up, but as always, no one did. I looked around to see if anyone was around; which, obviously, there wasn't. I concentrated on my surroundings, the animals, the birds, and shifted into a crystal-blue winged butterfly. I flew rapidly to the one place I would expect Maya to be, at the waterfall. I flew and saw a few small mice on the mossy ground. So cute. As soon as I got to the waterfall, I stopped flapping, and fell to the ground with a light tap. I instantly shifted back, and ran toward Maya. I stared at her in disbelief. Not again!

"MAYA! WAKE UP YOU LAZY BUM!" I screamed in her head

"ugh.. Candace! I JUST got to sleep!" she yelled back to me in my head. Sometimes being telepathic with each other was very annoying.

"I don't care if you were sleeping! Unfreeze the waterfall!!" I yelled. I stared at the frozen water. Some older sister she was.

"You missed chores, AND we have to start celebrating the anniversary!"
I was sure she didn't forget, neither of us ever could

The anniversary. We celebrated it every year, on August eighth. It has now been four years since we left mom with that wizard. I winced as I thought the name. Four long years.. I can remember the old memory.. My older sister and I had ran to the large grassy field, and once we calmed down, we walked into a deeper part of the forest, and found an old abandoned church, and a medium-sized hut. It wasn't in too bad of a shape, and we just slightly fixed it up. It is now where we live. There's no one else that ever comes here.

Apparently, there's these rumors that some evil beings live up here, and with everyone being superstitious, they don't dare to come up here. I laugh every time I think about it. Lucky break for us, I suppose. My sister and I now have mastered our powers. We are telepathic to each other; as well as Maya can control Ice, and I can shape-shift into any animal, and butterflies. It comes in handy sometimes. I sighed as my older sister slowly stood up. This was her favorite place to hang out.

She held her hand out, and the frozen waterfall suddenly unfroze, making me shape shift into a wolf, from the sudden noise. I growled at her, as she patted my head, laughing over the roaring of the waterfall

"Your SO cool, Candace!" She said, still laughing, and walking back to the hut.

I sighed and caught up to her.

"So, what are we going to do this year, Maya?" I thought to her.

"Hmm.. I don't know.. Guess we'll have to decide on something, huh?" she said, and smiled at me.

"I picked it last year, so it's your turn to decide" I thought, humming a tune to myself

"Yes... Yes it is my turn.." she mumbled to herself

We got back to the now-spotless house, and I shifted back, fixing my shirt.

"Hey, Candace, lets go collect some fruits and herbs" She said, cleaning herself up a bit

Herbs and berries are what we use to give offering to Mom. We're not sure if she's dead, but we haven't heard anything, for obvious reasons.

I went back outside, and went to a few berry bushes.

"I'll get the berries, and you can get the herbs!" I called to her

"Kay" she replied and walked in another direction.

I sighed. As close as my sister and I were; there was always some secrets between us. Even if we were telepathic with each other. I sighed again and popped some berries into my mouth.

I placed different types of berries into the pick-nick basket. My favorite berries were the huckle berries, which were in season mostly in the summer time.

After the basket was filled with a life time supplies of berries, I started off in the direction of the church, taking my time. I kicked a few rocks along the way, and one hit a tree. I winced at it made a thump noise.

"Oops.." I said quietly, and made my way to the church.

When I got to the entry way of the church, I had to push a few vines out of the way. Poor thing was so unused. I opened the door with a loud squeak. Stupid thing. Always so noisy. I looked around the now-lit church from the sunlight that was beaming through the door.

I smiled, and walked up to a table that was standing there near the back of the church. I brushed off the dust that was sitting on it with my hand, and placed the basket of berries down. I dusted my hand off, and went around the other side of the table, and ducked under it. I grabbed a couple cups, that you would usually drink wine from, during Communion, and stood up, to place them on the table. I ducked back under, to grab two candle, and, incense holders. I reached into my little purse, and took out two candles, and two incense sticks, and placed them into the holders. I brought out a little package of matches, and brought out two sticks. For some reason, I always had them with me. I took the berries, and put them into the cup, making sure not to spill any. I smiled when the pile of berries stood in a pyramid form, and didn't fall out.

I heard a few foot steps, and I turned around to see my sister walk in, looking beautiful, as usual. She had a light-weight dress that was intertwined with threads, that shone from the sunlight that beamed into the church, and left a small trail of dust with each step that she took. She had sparkling earrings that hung from her ears, and a tiara that sat on the top of her brown hair, and around her neck had a locket that she got from mom. Her hair had sparkles, that gave her a mysterious, yet angelic look. She had strapped sandals, with a small gem in the middle of it. She had a butterfly that flew next to her, that made the outfit look complete. Her eyes shone with happiness, as she walked closer to where I was standing. Our eyes, were a creamy blue, and had no pupils.

She smiled at me as she came to where I was standing, and I frowned a little bit. She sometimes over did it with her outfits. I looked down at myself, and gave a small giggle.

I had on a shirt that sat on the lower part of my shoulder, and went to the top of my waist line. I had a short skirt, that was covered by a longer skirt, that was clear, but had sparkles, and it flared out. I had on white stockings, that covered my pale legs, and on my feet, I had the same sandals that Maya had, but with a darker gem. My hair had a small heart hair pin, on the right side of my head. My mom had brown hair, and my dad had black hair, but I have light blue hair, with two curls in the front. My mom always said it was from my her mom's sister, and that I was very lucky to have it. I don't really think I am, because all the kids teased me in the villages, but that was the past. Around me, I had crystal-winged butterflies, that gave off silver glitter, with each flap that they took.

I looked up at my sister, and smiled. She walked next to me, and I handed her a match. I slid the match down against the rough part of the box, and it lit instantly. I then handed my sister the box, and she did the same. We lit the candles in unison, and then we lit the incense in unison. The room instantly filled with a lilac sent, and my sister and I smiled to each other. We kneeled down, and started praying for our mother.
