Submitted Week 06, February 2nd to the 8th.
"Oh my," exclaimed the Spring Faerie as she scuttled along. "So much to do, and so many people to cheer up!" She sighed dismally at the sight of the frozen white earth, and glared warily at the icicles hanging from her cozy cottage. She gingerly stepped down the icy cobblestone path as she hurried to town, where her work would begin.
The squeals of excitement from the children as they spotted her made her smile brightly. "We've been waiting for you for a long time," said the long-bearded elder behind the children. His eyes wrinkled as he laughed at the children's antics.
The Spring Faerie knelt down, and one by one, blew on each child's cheek. Slowly, they blossomed pink, as warmth was restored, and their blue lips faded to a cherry red.
She picked a clover from beneath her feet and gently placed it on the barren, frigid ground. With a ripple not unlike the wind upon a field of wild grasses, the snow began to melt and wild flowers of all kinds began blooming in its place. A gentle breeze blew by, but instead of the arctic air the children braced for; it was fragrant tropical warmth that made them all shiver. All that is, except the Spring Faerie.
She turned to leave. "Oh, oh, won't you stay?" pleaded one small girl, as she made her way up to the front. The Spring Faerie smiled, and her eyes sparkled. "No, I cannot stay my dear. Spring is needed in other places, and they await my presence. But don't fret, I'll see you next year." That seemed to soothe the young girl's fears, and she stepped back into the crowd.
The Spring Faerie turned and waved, as she began skipping along the cobblestone path, now lined with beautiful tulips and daisies.
