It was a rather wet day in Douglasville as the storm clouds kept rolling in. Unfortunately Samantha and I were caught in the middle of it. We were stuck outside only to be protected by the tree tops, which really weren’t that safe seeing that lightning is attracted to tall objects. Earlier today the sky was clear and the birds were chirping while I and Samantha, also known as Sam, were just walking. Now we are fighting to survive the wretched weather.
Our shoes splashed through the thick mud that laid across the woodland floor, our pants soaked up to our knees in mud. We wore out coats over our heads to protect us from the rain, it did not work out as well as we intended to. I lead in front of Sam, who was slowly trailing behind, my eyes scanning past the trees for any shelter. Anything would help, a shed, a log big enough for us to sit into, but then I saw it. A house, the old abandoned house that my mother told us to steer clear of, she said it was full of witch craft. I had forgotten all about Sam, I did not hear her foot steps following mine anymore; I quickly stopped and turned to see Sam with her ankle caught on some barb wire. There was a small amount of blood that soaked through her pants, I winced at the sight.
“Samantha? Are you okay?” I asked as I hurried over to her, bending over and trying to untangle the mess she had gotten in. “Yeah, I am okay. Thanks.” she seemed out of breathe, or maybe it was just her nerves, seeing that she could of lost her foot. I pulled back my hand as an intense pain came about; blood ran down my hand but was soon washed away by the rain. The unkempt barb wire finally released Sam’s foot, she pulled it back quickly. “There is a house over there…” I pointed in the direction I had saw it, “…you think you will be able to go that far?” I glanced down at her bleeding ankle. “Yeah, it’s not bad Summer.” she said in her always cheery and enthusiastic voice that always made me give off a smile, which I did.
In moments we were both stepping onto the porch, carefully, of the house. The wood was cracking in several rotting places. “Are you sure no one lives here?” Sam’s voice sounded uneasy, she was worried, scared. I glanced back flashing a smile, “Don’t let the old folk tails get to you hun, no one has lived here in decades.” I really was clueless to the subject, but I was just trying to make the atmosphere a bit easier to be in. As I reached for the door knob a bit of warm air flowed around me, the door slowly opened without me even touching it. Sam did not notice this, which was a good thing, she probably wouldn’t have gone into the house if she thought it was haunted.
We stood in what appeared to be the dinning room, it was a bit odd, and everything was clean. No dust laid on the floor nor the selves of the dishes. The dinning table was set, China Plates and elegant silverware all in their place. “Summer…” the cracking voice of Sam emerged from the over welling silence. “Um…i really do not have an excuse for this one.” I said still mesmerized by the table, it being set and being so clean. I then noticed water seeping from under the door, it must be flooding outside. “Let’s go upstairs” I called to Sam.
We rushed up the creaky old steps to the second floor, it was quite, mysterious. “At least we are safe from the rain.” Sam said with a small smile, hiding her worries, she plops on the floor and leaned against the pink shaded wall. I did the same, we stared at each other for a long time before she took out her cell phone, “No service.” she announced. I sighed once and reached for my pocket, but my phone wasn’t there. “I think I left it downstairs, I will be right back” I dashed down stairs but there was no phone anywhere. I searched the watery floor but still nothing. “Summer!” I heard my name yelled from upstairs. “Come Here…now.” Samantha replied, my heart begun to beat fast.
As I reached closer to Sam I could hear my phone’s ringtone playing repeatedly. Sam stood at the doorway of a small room, looked to be a child’s. “You called my phone?” I asked, but Sam stood frozen, I looked in the room and my phone was underwater, playing the same tune. “What the…” my voice trailed off as I stepped into the room, it was sloped downwards a little, that’s where the water built up. Sam watched me from a distance. I reached down, grabbing the phone. It was still ringing. The number was unknown to me, even so I answered, putting it on speaker.
“Hello?” I said. There was nothing but silence. “Hang up.” Sam said shrugging. I was about to close the phone when I voice broke from the phone, “Wait!” it said, “The closet! Won’t you come play with me? I am in the Closet.” the phone beeped as the call ended. Sam and I exchanged glances before looking at the closet towards the far end of the room. Sam was right beside me, “How….did it know your number?” “I don’t know…” I said, my voice became weak, I was scared.
I reached for the closet door, twisting the stiff knob, but inside, there was nothing. Except for a small toy towards the back, a ballerina doll. I could hear the sound of Sam’s uneasy swallow. I leaned forward trying to grasp the doll, though as I attempted to, a child’s hand emerged from the shadows, latching onto my hand. The strength of the little hand was enormous. Sam grabbed onto my arm, pulling with all her strength, but it wasn’t enough. We were both pulled forward, I expected my face to hit the back of the closet, but instead we went through it.
It felt like I had been sleeping for days, I woke up to sunshine, dryness, and Sam shaking nearly to death. I rubbed my head, I found a piece of cloth tied around it,
“What happen?” I asked.
“You hit your head….”
“How?”
“…When we were pulled into this world…”
“..the voice…”
“…It was a monster, luring us in…”
My eyes glanced around, we were in a small cave, I felt the ground shake beneath me. “Shh…” Sam voiced. I stood up and walked to the entrance of the cave, along the walls worlds were written in blood. Help me, save me. A shiver went through my spine. “Summer Stop!” Sam urged. I kept going; I exited the cave, but as I did and huge teal dinosaur foot landed stepped in front of me. My eyes widened, the dinosaur looked down at me, it teeth just drooling with saliva. I froze, my muscles locked up, I knew I was doomed. Though Sam saved the day when she reached out and pulled me back inside the cave. “Summer your so stupid. I told you not to go outside.” her teeth grinded against each other.
“What was that?” I asked. “A lizasaurous. I guess. It growls Liz, Liz, every few hours.” I stared outside the cave, nothing was moving. “I think its gone come on.” I said walking to the entrance of the cave again, Sam hesitated but followed. “How are we going to get home…” I wondered out loud. The land was odd, cotton candy trees, rocks made of stone like candy, the river was chocolate and the sky looked like it was painted. It was like a kid created this world. We walked a couple of minutes, trying to figure out were we had came from.
We heard a loud growl, Liz Liz, we both immediately started running. The great dinosaur was right behind us and it was snapping. Both Sam and I were caught by some kind of root, I got out of it, but Sam was still stuck. I turned back to help but before I could the Lizasaurous was already lugging for her. Blood splattered against my face as Sam’s screams filled the air. There was nothing I could do, her life was over.
I ran, that’s all I could do now, I was alone. Tears streamed down my face, my eyes burned. I fell to my knees before a great cliff over looking a sea of what looked like cherry juice. “Samantha!” my voice broke through the air, my tear filled screams echoed. “Samantha don’t leave me…” I was weak, defenseless. “..Samantha please…” my cries were no good, she was gone.
I stood up, looking down on the sea of juice. I faced away from it, looking back towards the plains, to where the Dinosaur was having a meal of my best friend. I stepped back, feeling the edge of the cliff on my foot, closing my eyes. “See you soon…” I fell back, feeling my breath being released. “..Samantha.” my body hit the water, the rock hard candy rocks and everything went black.
