Chapter 1: Remembrance
Remembrance

Chapter 1

That day was the worst day of my life. I lost a sister, and a dear friend. My sister and I were walking home; we were only a block away from home as our school bus pulled away from Underwood Park. It was the end of May, or to be clearer, May 28th.

We were walking past the part and through all different types and colors of trees. I was reading my favorite book (as I am into love stories) until a light voice, one like a soft hum of a bell, called my name. "Hurry up Lindsey!" and it was Nicky, my sister. She looked very pretty that day, if my memory recalls. She wore her warm brown hair in a bun. She was wearing a white tank top with blue shorts and yellow flip flops. And her eyes....I remember the most. They were somehow, a liquid hazel. They were always so calm and somewhat, hypnotizing.

"Nicky, would you calm down? We are almost home, we won't be late. I promise," I said as I was putting my blonde hair back as my sister had hers and put my book away in my backpack.

It was my sister's birthday, and she had plans with her friends and a surprize party was coming from them later.

We walked up the street a little farther, past the neighbor's house and their glorious flower garden.

Including the information about my sister, she was also older than me, only by a year though. She was in ninth grade, and I eigth. And honestly, I was pretty nervous about highschool.

As I played with my hair, my sister was talking to me about her plans for her party. I giggled and let my hair fall back and replied," It will be fun Nick. Don't worry." I smiled as she hurried to the corner of the busy street. But to get home, we had to cross this certain street.

Walking side-by-side we were almost to the second lane, giggling about the party as we heard a screech coming down the street.

A black Volvo came toward us, picking up speed on the way.

"Lindsey! Get out of the way!" Nicky howled at me. But I remained still, I was frozen with fear. I was going to die. But I felt pain, a sudden sharp pain in my side, realizing Nicky had pushed me.

I turned around, still scared; I tried to grab her hand. I scanned her face, wondering and panicing on why she didn't grab my hand.

Her hazel eyes clouded over, and filled with tears. Her eyes...as calm as ever, then she smiled at me.

I saw a blue of black paint from the Volvo smear with red.

This all happened in an instant and my eyes filled with tears as I saw that the car stopped at the other side of the intersection, and I felt myself running towards it. I screamed Nicky's name over and over, chanting it.

I ran past the broken down Volvo. Quickly glancing inside the side window, I saw the man who was driving, probaby drunk driving, with his head bleeding and bobbing to the right side.

As I came to the front of the car I quickly glanced around.

Nicky's school things were scattered everywhere. From her blue backpack, ripped in half, to her party invitations spread out around her.

I threw my things to the side when I reached her. Even if she was bleeding hard, she still wore that smile she gave me; the one she always wore, no matter what.

She was missing her right arm, and her head was bleeding badly...I gasped in horror at this sight.

Her hair was out of the bun, and her eyes were clouding over slowly. She then whispered to me.

I kneeled down to hear her and she told me, " Lindsey, please, be more careful." And I started to bawl.

I grabbed my cell phone and dialed my dad's number. I looked down at my sister, feeling agony, I tossed the phone and embraced her in my arms. "Don't leave me Nicky! Please."

I could hear my dad on the other line of my phone. "Lindsey? Nicky? Hello? Lindsey! Answer the phone!" he hollared.

Still holding the limp body with one arm, I reached for the blood spattered phone. "Dad? Please come home. It's Nicky...dad," my voice broke," she's dead."

That was a couple years ago. Just two years. It was once again May 28th. It was Nicky's birthday, her death day, and Memorial Day.

My family; my mother and father, were standing around Nicky's grave.

I was standing in the shadow of a near-by tree, watching my parents place their gifts. I wanted a moment alone with my sister.

My mom placed some roses, Nick's favorite flower, by the headstone. And my dad just stared at the stone for a moment, and slowly walked to the car and deadly stared out the front window.

My mom got up, dusted off her pants and walked over to me. She briefly hugged me, and half dragged herself to the car, probably to give me space with her favorite daughter.

I slowly walked up to the ivory colored grave. I started to shake as I set down the picture I drew for her last year, a rose. One that resembled her in everyway.

I bent down to get to my knees to touch the stone.

I slowly traced the outside of her name as it started to rain. The stone was very smooth against my shaking hands.

I read the words carved on the stone over and over. And to this day, I still remember the words:

In Remembrance of

Nicky Park.

A loving daughter, sister and friend.

Nicky will be missed by all.

Oh my goodness...I read this and was immediately exposed to everything you had written...I felt every word.It captured me and and didn't let go until the last word,in a way I have never been before.I hoped this was not a true story, but after I had finished reading,I realized that it was and I feel for you from the bottom of my heart.I'm terribly sorry.I can only imagine how you must have felt, but you obviesly have a gift in writing,so keep up the good work. It's truely amazing.
