To all of the fans of the Silent Hill series, I bring you this:
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for the Wii. Release date: TBA
I was reading in my Nintendo Power about it and got so excited I just had to tell all of you guys.
They are making a "reimagination" of the first Silent Hill. You play as Harry and you're looking for his daughter Cheryl as in the first game. This game is NOT just a remake of the first game at all. There are major differences. But of course you will find many similarites as well.
When transformed into the nightmare world, it is snowing, there are icycles, and things are frozen over. THERE IS NO COMBAT. You run from enemies rather than fight them. The reason for this they said was because they don't want you to feel that you can over power them. Like in many horror games there is combat, and yeah, you're scared at first, but you soon aren't scared anymore because you know you can fight and defeat your enemies, therefore taking away the thrill of the horror. You cannot defeat your enemies in Shattered Memories. They wanted it to be like an actual nightmare and be more realistic about it. In your nightmares, do you usually fight whatever's chasing you and trying to kill you? No, not usually. I can definately admit that. I'd be much too afraid to fight, especially a Silent Hill creature.
Another great difference is the personality profile that you fill out in the beginning of the game. However you fill it out determines what your enemies will look like, what people you meet, their personality, what they're wearing, and also what events may or may not happen in your game. Also, there are different routes you can take which can also alter your game. Some differences are very small, others are large. From what I was reading, they were mentioning the demo they played, and at one part you get a phone call and for them it was a scared man on the line. Another person who was part of the interview instead got a woman on the other line. So it can be small things like that. It's not like coming to a fork in the road and choosing good side or bad side. Your game is created just for you. Everyone's game will be different. Another part that they mentioned about the demo is about the certain path they decided to take. The choices were through a clothing store or a camera/video store. They went through the video store and when the exited they could not go into the diner(the one from the first game where you meet Cybil) because it was closed for the night. However, if perhaps they had taken the alternate route, they would have been able to enter the diner and meet Cybil.
You still have your flashlight of course. What would Silent Hill be if you didn't have a flashlight? You control it with the Wii-mote, and of course walking is with the nunchuck. Also, certain sounds will be heard only through your Wii-mote. Like phone calls, the static when there's a monster, etc.. They really wanted to make you feel like you were the one trapped in Silent Hill looking for your daughter. There is no text because once again, they want to make you feel like you're the one going through this hell. You focus your sight on an object you want to examine rather than push a button around a room to find something.
The visuals are amazing. Noteworthy is the light and shadow effects from your flashlight. It really does look great.
I'm so excited for the release of this game. Being a fan and collector of the series, you know I'll be getting it as soon as it hits the shelves.
