Fly
Fly

I remember my dad always saying, “Where there is death, there are ghosts, and where there are ghosts, there is death.” I never really knew what that meant until one fateful night when it all came clear.
My sister Ally and I sat alone in the living room with her playing with her dolls and me watching the nightly news. My parents had left me in charge tonight for they had left to a party.
“Remember, Ally needs to be in bed by ten o'clock,” they had stated before walking out the door and leaving me to a dark and empty (except for my sister of course) house.
“Mr. Fluffykins, what one do you think Barbie should wear?” Ally questioned her stuffed teddy bear as she held up two tiny doll costumes.
I rolled my emerald eyes and retorted, “Ally, Mr. Fluffykins is a doll, he won't talk back.”
Ally turned her head and glared at me with her green eyes which were identical to mine. “He is TOO real! He talks to me all the time!” she scorned in her tiny voice.
My eyes made the same movement as before while I returned my gaze to the television screen. The “plastic” news lady informed me of the days happenings in a monotonous voice and I yawned, but when the screen turned into a white static, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“This is weird,” I mused aloud as I flipped through the channels, everything turning up the same.
All of a sudden, Ally burst out in a fit of laughter, startling me and causing my heart to race.
“Jesus Ally! What the heck made you laugh so hard?” I questioned with my hand over my quickly beating heart.
“Mr. Fluffykins made a funny joke,” Ally commented as she wiped the moisture growing at the corner of her eyes.
“Sure he did,” I commented in a low voice as I went back to trying to fix the television. I stood up to go check the satellite dish outside when I saw the green numbers flashing “10:00” on the clock. “Ally, it's time for bed,” I stated as I walked over to my little sister and began picking up her toys.
Her tiny hand covered mine quickly, disrupting me from cleaning up. “I don't want to go to bed yet, and neither does Mr. Fluffykins,” she pouted with her teddy bear clutched to her chest.
I frowned and reached down to grab the toy from her grasp. She screamed loudly when I had it in my possession and dangled it out of reach above her head.
“GIVE HIM BACK TO ME!” she shouted as she waved her arms up high, trying to grab onto Mr. Fluffykins' leg.
I started to open my mouth to deny her request when I felt sharp teeth bite on the edge of my finger. “Ouch!” I exclaimed while I dropped Ally's teddy bear and held my finger up in front of my eyes. Sure enough, there were tiny little teeth marks at the tip of my finger, causing my eyebrows to furrow in wonder. The only thing that could have done that was... Mr. Fluffykins? I mused as I turned my eyes onto the little brown doll that was now in the hands of my sister. She stepped on my toe in anger and left me to run up stairs toward her bedroom.
“What if... Nah, what am I thinking,” I thought aloud as I followed after Ally, disregarding the tiny pain that was in my big toe. I was about to turn the door knob to her room but paused when I heard two small voices behind the door.
“I'm sorry about my stupid mean sister,” I heard Ally say in a childish voice.
Who could she be talking to? I wondered as I pressed my ear to the door in order to hear more.
The next voice was tiny, as if a toddler was talking, and stated, “It's okay. She just doesn't understand.”
There was a slight pause before muffled sounds of whispering leaked through the door, causing me to worry a bit. I placed my hand on the knob, and ever so slowly, I opened the door, poking my head through the gap to view the scene.
“I feel like flying, Ally,” Mr. Fluffykins stated, his dark beady eyes glowing red in the moonlight. My heart stopped from fright as I watched the tiny doll move its stubby legs to walk over to the edge of the window. “So let's fly...”
A squeak made it's way from up my throat as I went to grab Ally, but before I could move an inch, those same dark beady eyes glared my way and paralyzed me on the spot.
Ally, oblivious to her surroundings, happily skipped over to where Mr. Fluffykins stood and opened the window, letting the cold wind from beyond rustle her white lace curtains. “Show me how,” she ordered with a large smile as she stood on the window sill with her doll.
The doll gave me one last stare before turning towards his host and motioning for her to pick him up. “All you have to do is jump and before you know it, you'll be flying,” he informed as he cuddled her in her tiny arms.
I felt my muscles being released from the tense nature that they were in before, and before I could blink, I sprinted to save my little sister from her cruel fate. But time sped up for her, and time slowed down for me as I watched her tiny lips motion the word “O.K.” and her little feet move from the sturdy surface that was preserving her life.
