After three and a half weeks, Johan, Kiera and Saeran’s slow progress finally paid off as they found themselves at the city gates.

“Johan,” Kiera held out his dagger. “Why don’t you head home. I’ll take Saeran up to the palace.”

“Then I guess I’ll see you later.” Johan waved as he turned and walk away.

“To the palace then?” Kiera asked.

“Where else would we go?”

“Okay then.” The palace wasn’t very hard to find since it was the hugest structure in all of Lombarton. It seemed even more beautiful at sunset while the orange glow illuminated the entire castle. Within minutes, the two of them were at the stairs that led to the palace.

“Crap, this is going to be tricky,” Saeran muttered.

“Let me help, I can almost guarantee the stick won’t.” Kiera supported him under his shoulder and threw the stick down a nearby alley.

As the two of them climbed the staircase, Saeran spoke up, “I have to say, I’m a little nervous.”

“About what?” Kiera asked.

“At this point just about everything. I’m back at the palace and back to all my responsibilities, I’m going to have to be king one day.”

“Why would you be worried about being king? You have tons of power and can boss everyone around.”

“But then I would be like my father,” for the first time Saeran was ashamed of his father’s lack of concern for the nation. “I want to be a king that the people actually like. I’m afraid I’ll let everyone down.”

“Don’t be, you’ll be a great king. And if you ever need a peasant’s view just write me, I’ll do whatever I can to help,” Kiera smiled.

“Thanks, that means a lot to me,” said Saeran. A minute later, they reached the top of the staircase and were met with a guard overcome with respectful concern.

“Sir are you all right?! If I may sir, I advise getting some medical help! Sir, what are you even doing back so soon? If I may be so bold as to ask.”

“Relax,” Saeran put his hand up to silence the armored guard, “I’m fine and I’d like for her to help explain to my father what happened.” He gestured towards Kiera.

“Yessir!” he saluted. “Would you like me to escort you to the medical department?”

“Thanks for your concern but I’m sure I’ll be all right,” Saeran said. “C’mon, lighten up.” Kiera was astonished by how casual he was to his soldiers. As they started walking inside she was even more astounded by the architectural beauty and expensive paintings.

“I knew this was a fancy place,” Kiera gawked at the tall stone walls. “But I had no idea…”

“Well I’m glad you like it.” Saeran turned to a guard nearby, “Would you tell my father that I’m in the medical department.”

“Yessir!” that soldier also saluted and walked away.

Kiera was still staring awestruck at the chandeliers hanging from the thirty-foot ceiling; it must be terrible trying to light those things. “So who are these people in these paintings?” she asked.

Saeran pointed to a painting of an old couple to their left, “That’s my Uncle James and Aunt Lydia.” He pointed to another picture of an old man wearing knight’s armor, “That’s my grandfather Nickolas and that one,” He pointed to an old man with light blue robes and a long white beard. “That is Merlin.”

“Are you serious!” Kiera exclaimed.

“No, that’s my great grandfather Willis. He always thought he was Merlin, we’ve all decided that he was senile.”

“Oh sure, now you’re mocking your elders, what would they think of you now,” Kiera faked disappointment. “Who is that?!” she pointed to a huge painting at the end of the corridor with a man wearing very old-fashioned clothing.

“Oh him? He was our very first king, King Roderick,” Saeran said.

“Wow! I wonder how great a king he must have been.”

“Actually I heard he ruled with an iron fist.”

“Really? Hmm, by the way, where is the medical department?” Kiera asked. It seemed as if they had walked a mile inside the castle already.

“Right in here.” Saeran opened a pair of dark wood doors. Even the medical department was enormous. Beds lined the walls, each with its own nightstand and lamp. Off to the left was a woman behind a counter organizing papers.

“She looked up to see prince Saeran in front of her. “Sir, are you all right?!” she asked rushing over with concern.

“Other than a broken leg I’m fine. If you could take a look at it, nurse, that would be great.”

“Of course sir, right this way.” The nurse seemed to ignore Kiera completely as she brought Saeran over to one of the beds. She unwrapped the makeshift bandage and examined his leg. After looking it over for two minutes she said, “It looks like it was bandaged pretty well in the first place. Just to be sure I’ll go get a wet cloth to clean up the wound a little more.”

“Thank you nurse,” Saeran called after her. As she left to another side of the medical department. “So do you like the castle?” Saeran turned towards Kiera who was sitting herself down at the foot of the bed.

Kiera couldn’t answer, she was too busy admiring the huge stained glass windows that lined the tops of the walls. One had light shining down on King Roderick as if he were sent from the heavens to create this land. Another was a battle scene with knights charging into battle. Tons more illuminated the room but Kiera’s mind strayed. “Saeran, if you’re so kind to all your guards then why on earth would they want to hurt you?”

There was a long pause as Saeran tried to figure out how to answer the question. “I was hoping you wouldn’t notice…Before you came a long, before I realized that I was getting death threats, I treated everyone like dirt. Guards, peasants and the homeless never seemed like ‘things’ that demanded respect or needed money.” Saeran was talking faster now, trying to get everything out. “It never felt like I was taking money from real people. Looking back, I can’t believe how badly I treated them.

Kiera couldn’t say anything, but she wasn’t angry, she was concerned.

Saeran continued, “When you agreed to protect and escort me to Tybard, I didn’t know what your social or economic status was. You were a stranger that had to be treated with respect, otherwise I would have been dead,” he forced a chuckle. “But then the farther we traveled, the more I realized how much I lo-”

The King burst through the door, “Saeran! Are you all right?!” Kiera stood up as he rushed over to the side of the bed, again she was ignored.

“I’m fine dad, really. I have a broken leg but it should heal pretty quickly.”

King Frederick turned to face Kiera who had bowed, trying not to get into any trouble for disrespect. “Who are you?” he grunted, obviously suspicious.

“Sir, I was the Prince’s bodyguard and escort to Tybard,” she said, not taking her head up.

“And you let this happen to him?!?” his voice rose.

“Sir, I…”

“Dad, it wasn’t her fault!” said Saeran. “We were outnumbered.”

“Outnumbered?” the King turned towards Saeran. “By who?”

“The people that sent the death threats.” Saeran was trying desperately to figure out how to tell his father that his only daughter was dead. “Isn’t this why you hired a bodyguard? To protect me from my enemies?”

“I was actually thinking about the wilderness when I did that. Wait, where is Trina?” He looked around as if he had not seen her when he walked in.

“Well uhh, see…that’s the thing…” Saeran stammered trying to figure out how to put it. “She was the one that sent the death threats.”

“What!?! You mean my little angel?! Your little sister-”

“Was an excellent actress, she had us all fooled. In the end, all she wanted was to be queen. She hired the bandits and rebels to kill mom and after she killed me she would have gone after you.”

“Well where is she? I need to talk to her.”

“Uhh, well…”

Kiera spoke up, her head still bowed, “Permission to speak Sir?”

King Frederick was a little taken aback by the amount of respect this peasant girl was using, “Granted.”

“In order to keep her from attacking again, she had to be killed.” Kiera let that news sink in a little. “Even if she hadn’t been killed, by all fair trials she would have been charged with attempted regicide and sentenced to life in prison.”

“My…my little angel,” he breathed. Tears started to run down his face as he stumbled backwards against the nightstand.

“I’m sorry it had to end like this Sir.”

Saeran shook his head frantically but it was too late, it had already been said.

“You!” he growled, “Look me in the eyes! You’ll be thrown in prison for life for succeeded regicide in the least!”

Kiera cowered staring into the eyes of the grief stricken king.

“Dad! Please no! She was only doing what she was hired to do, protect me! Please stop it!” Saeran begged. He couldn’t stand to see Kiera thrown in prison, or worse…

He stared at Kiera a second longer then turned back towards Saeran who had just breathed a sigh of relief. “All right…if you will excuse me, I have to take care of something.” The king made an excuse to leave and walked out the door.

Not a second later, the nurse came back with a wet cloth and some gauze. She was obviously listening from the other end of the room. The nurse wasted no time in washing the remaining dried blood from Saeran’s leg and bandaging it. Done in a flash, she left as soon as possible, not wanting to be mixed up in any bad situation.

“Well that could have gone a lot better,” said Saeran.

“Yes but it also could have gone a lot worse.” Kiera sat down at the foot of the bed again and smiled at Saeran who was smiling right back.

Where he rules with an iron fist, is it coated in PLUTONIUM? XD Ah, sorry, but you have to love the DGM Abridged references.

And I like how this one was written. Kiera's entire personality has obviously changed gradually, which makes her a very interesting character ^^ (Static characters usually aren't any fun...dynamic characters own <3 ) Oh boy, I'm using Language Arts references X_X

Not much else I can think of saying, so I hope the next chapter is in when I get back home.

    Caught a few things:
"she was even more astounded by the architectural beauty and expensive." (should something be after "expensive"?)

“It looks like it was bandaged pretty well in the first place.
