Art is more visually appealing when it exists within the elements/principles of design. It's the rational, mathematical side of the artwork. Good composition, use of Phi, mature use of the elements of design, and of media manipulation give you good technical results. This is when we consider an artwork to be beautiful, even if its not "beautiful" in traditional terms of aesthetics.

I'll give a couple of examples:
-If I'm want a dynamnic scene with a lot of emotion and movement, I may use diagonal lines as opposed to horizontal. Horizontal lines indicate stability, but diagonal lines indicate movement and agitation.
-Making some lines thick and some thin can change influence of where the viewer is looking. You can move the focal by playing with line.
-You might use color to influence emotions. Such as a cold, blue palette's to indicate cold or loneliness.

The other side of the coin has to do with personal content. What your subject matter is can also influence the emotions of others and how they feel about your work. It's the "who you are" part of your art. What you like and what you chose to draw or paint says a lot about your personality.

You can find internet resources talking about the elements of design, phi, and composition in art. So plenty of information on how to improve your composition work to make it better. smile
