a bunch of random things written
the evening of the dance had arrived. anne's black dress matched her mood. sad, depressed. all caused by something that had been bound to happen, something she had been warned that could happen. but all the same she had ignored the warnings and the truth to stay happy and it had cost her dearly.
james was gone, gone forever. the only thing that had made life perfect and he was gone forever. she'd tried his cell the second she'd read his note but it had been disconnected. his behavior from the night before he left finally made sense. he had to leave and didn't want to. the look on his face when he had gotten back from the pack meeting floated in front of her eyes. his tormented face with his eyes so lost looking and sad looking at her, already mourning the loss of anne. she stood there looking at her reflection in the mirror, lost in her sea of memories and floating in her sea of sadness.
the doorbell rang making her jump and jolting her out of her memories. but it was only lucas, ready to take her to the dance. before james, anne would have been breathless at the sight of lucas in his tux. but now she had to fight to smile. but he was excited and she felt guilty having asked him to make james jealous and mad. it had worked.
"ready to go?" his eyes were sparkling with excitement like he was a little kid again.
"as ready as i'll ever be." she tried to keep the sadness out of her voice. she almost succeded. only a little bit broke through. she hoped lucas wouldn't notice. he didn't appear to although the excitement in his eyes did seem to dim a bit.
anne spent the car ride to the school trying to control her memories while lucas talked about how great the dance was going to be. for once,he didn't seem to notice that she wasn't listening to him. the car ride passed slowly.
in the gym where the dance was being held, multicolored lights were flashing. the noise from the live band was deafening and the decorations were simple yet beautiful.
yet, anne still couldn't get as excited as she had been a couple weeks ago. don't think of james. not tonight and not now. but that wouldn't happen no matter what she did. anne sighed quietly and saddly.
"want to dance?" lucas was looking at her, slight concern in his eyes mixing with the enthusiasim; she hadn't fooled him at all. which was too bad, she didn't want to ruin his evening.
no "sure i'd love to." and anne let him pull her onto the dance floor and into the crowd.
"great song huh?" lucas was looking at her like james had. and it brought memories of the last few weeks into her mind which she tried to force back into the deeper parts of her mind until later.
"huh? oh yeah it's great." anne was losing the fight to keep james of her mind as she had known she would. there were memories everywhere. the first time she met him was in front of her eyes along with the memory of him glaring at her as she asked lucas to this stupid dance.
"look," lucas was looking into her eyes, " i know you miss james but comeon. the guy left without saying good-bye, face it. he doesn't care about you and he never did. but i do and i always will."
before she could stop him, before she even knew what he was going to do, lucas kissed her. and held her tightly against him, in a way that reminded her of james.
"stop it!" anne pulled away leaving lucas looking surprised and slightly dazed. "im not ready for something like this okay?"
"i can't wait. i want you now." he reached for her again so he could kiss her.
"no!" she retreated farther away. " know what? im starting to regret ever asking you to this. take me home."
"i'm not taking you home. we just got here." lucas was starting to look and mad.
"fine. i'll walk. anything is better than being here with you." anne turned to leave but lucas grabbed her arm and forced her to look at him.
"if this was such a bad idea, why the hell did you ask me?" lucas was furious. his teeth were grinding.
anne flinched. she didn't want to tell him why. he'd get even madder, assuming that was possible. but lucas had his answer already; she could see it in his face. and unfortunatly he was going to be right.
"you were fighting with james that week." lucas's face was filling with comprehension and even more fury. "you asked me to get him back. you were using me to get at him!"
"okay i was. it was wrong and.." guilt and anger were starting to fill her.
"forget it. im not going to listen to this crap anymore." he was shouting and the people closest to the two of them were looking at them and eavesdropping.
lucas would've kept shouting but there was a noise outside the school. it was eerie and rose above the music. everything went quiet. everyone was tensly waiting for it to stop.
it finally did. just when everyone started to relax, the windows shattered and dozens of shapes flew through the openings edged with the jagged edges of broken glass and landing in the crowd, making glass fly through the air and causing people to scream in fear.
one of the shapes landed in front of anne and lucas. the form and the way it was holding itself was familiar. it was a wolf that couldn't be a wolf. it seemed wrong somehow. then as it locked on anne's eyes with its own dark, gleaming ones, she saw the horns, like the devil's.
it was a shapeshifter.
