Chapter 36: The Second Half Begins

It’s amazing how much you can learn about a person in a week. Star and I learned as much as out minds would allow about each other for the rest of the week. It was so much fun just spending time and talking with her! This week made me love her so much more. I now understood why she acted the way she acted, did, and said the things she said. It was now Sunday. Tomorrow we’d be heading out with a head start! The two of us were at the pool at the time. Star was dipping her feet in the water as I swam back and forth.

One thing I made sure to do was tell Star all about home. She said she couldn’t wait to get there! “Home sounds so great! I hope one more girl in the house won’t drive you nuts!” she giggled.

“Not at all! Not just because it’s you, but you’d be evening the odds, too,” I replied with a smile. I treaded water and started to stare at her with a smile. She stared back and we did so until be both began to laugh.

“I’m hungry,” I finally said.

“Ooh, me too!” Star agreed putting a hand to her stomach. “When’s dinner?”

I thought for a moment and answered, “Dinner’s usually at 7:30. Check my watch. It’s over by my towel.

Star gladly did so and reported, “It’s 7:15. If we leave now, we can get there kind of on time.” With that, I swam over towards the edge of the pool. Before I made it there, Star made a staircase of ice from the water.

“You didn’t have to do that! And besides, you could get caught if you aren’t careful, baby,” I whispered to her climbing out.

“Sooo? I want to do it anyway! I love doin’ stuff for yuh, honey,” she said with a giggle. I thanked her nonetheless and we hurried back to our room hand in hand. Once we got back, we showered off (separately for those with their minds in the gutter), dressed comfortably, and walked back downstairs to the dining room.

Once there, we entered the room and saw Kratias and Ashley. “Hey there lovebirds!” Nathan teased.

“Yo!” I greeted not even caring about the remark. “Where’s Good Cousin?” I asked in reference to Anthony.

“Well,” Ashley began, “Sara told us he had to go so they could make it to the ¾ mark on time, so he cleared out and left. He says he wishes you and Star and that he’d meet you at home, if not the finish line.”

“Douche!” I said as if he was there.

“Oh yeah and if you said that, then to call you an a*****e,” she added quickly.

“All is right in the world!” I said taking a seat across from Ashley. Star was to my right and Nathan was to my left, Curstan across from him. We enjoyed our last dinner together with laughter and plenty of stories. These are the times I love best, I think.

There were times that suck and it just seemed cruel. The next morning was one of them. Sara had come into our room that morning with the extra key she had to all of our rooms. She walked in casually as if it was her own room and stood in the center of the room. Sara then took a deep breath and shouted, “ON YOUR FEET TEAM NERAVIEN!!!” The commotion woke Ashley and Star, neither of them happy about the wake up call.

“What the ********?!” Star grumbled covering herself under the blankets.

“Star, if there’s a problem, we can send you straight back to Neravien! It’s really not a problem,” she threatened. There were rumors that she and Tom were doing spying on us, especially Star and me. No one really put it past them, and so Star thought it best to tame her usually unforgiving tongue knowing she was beat.

Ashley had finally slinked out of bed and stood taming her terrible case of bed-head. “Morning, Sara!” she greeted sleepily, yet as energetically sarcastic as she could manage. “We’ll be out of here in an hour. Eight’s fine right?” she asked while yawning.

“Eight’s perfect! As soon Dyron wakes up, you’ll be that much closer!” Sara sighed. I hadn’t woken up to sound in five days. Plus, with beds this and a girl like Star next to me, I needed all the rest I could get. We stayed up for hours talking about anything!

“I got this, Sara!” Star smiled. She walked over to me, in a tangle of sheets. She then bent over me and whispered, “Baby, wake up!” in the sweetest, cutest voice I’d heard her use yet. The noise flowed throughout me and my eyes opened almost instantly.

After a rather awkward moment between us with Sara present, I greeted everyone and was given instructions to be ready by 7:45. Sara left soon afterward and as soon as the door closed, the three of us broke out into a mad rush to get ready. We took turns washing ourselves, cleaning, and gathering our possessions. Ashley ended up being last in the bathroom and we were ready to depart at 7:42. At this time we made a mad dash for the elevators. We got an ingenious idea to throw all our stuff into the elevator, send it down, and then take the stairs for time’s sake. After retrieving our stuff, we took off outside to see that our horses were ready to go. They were very well taken care of this week! We loaded them up and looked to Tom who was standing there the entire time.

“On your way then! See you soon…hopefully!” he called as we rode into the morning sun.
