Well...
Epilogue
I didn't know what to believe...the day they took me away.

It's amazing...how one's life could come crashing down so easily. It's as if we're all puppets...hanging from strings, always needing someone else to help us move. I like to think that someday our fairy godmother will come and grant us our freedom, but wishing on stars has gotten me nowhere these 18 years. Well on that day, my strings were cut, and I was alone.

I lived in an average family. Some would call it large, but I didn't see it as anything but my family. We were called Mikashiro. I was an only sister, surrounded by two younger twin brothers, Hideki and Hikaru, and an elder brother, Koei. Koei was the spitting image of my father, only less stern. The twins were the same as every other 10 year old boy, rowdy and curious, yet very warm. My father, Isamu, was a well-known shinobi around these parts. He was a vet from the great ninja war, and had lost an ear and an arm in the process. This, of course, characterized my mother, Kumiko, into the worrier. They were terribly in love, so much it would bring any other couple to tears. And it did from time to time.

Kakeru Hibiki, my partner, often laughed, worried that we would never make it to their standards. I agreed that it was impossible, but we'd make it as far as we could. His brother, Minoru Hibiki, who was younger than him by a year, seemed jealous of what we had. Koei, who was bi, often joked about taking part in a relationship with Minoru, who hastily declined every time.

People always said that nothing was perfect, but I never believed them, for the life I had led for so long seemed like nothing less than that. How I wish I had knocked on wood...

The day that they came to the village marked the end of my fairy-tale. In a flash, everyone I had come to love, every friend I had ever made, was gone forever. Dead. I fought with all my might, but their forces were stronger. I ended up hurting myself more than I hurt my enemy. The bitter taste of blood in my mouth from that day never seemed to subside. It still hasn't, even a month afterwards.

The day I write this is the day I become an empty shell. They're going to erase my memories, and train me to become one of their own. Who knows? Maybe things will be easier this way. I won't be sad, or scared anymore. Even still...I never regret meeting you...mom, dad, Koei, Hideki, Hikaru, Minoru, and you...Kakeru. If you're out there somewhere...please promise me, you'll keep yourself alive.

I can't keep this letter...for if they find it, they'll likely destroy it. To whoever reads this, please...keep this letter safe. It means everything to me.

Well, here I go. Off to a new adventure. The journey ahead will be tough, but I was raised with three brothers, I think I can handle it, heh heh...Oh, sorry. I believe it's starting to drizzle, I apologize that the paper's getting a little wet...

And now I must say good-bye. Good-bye to my friends, good-bye to my family, good-bye to all the fun and happy memories I have of when we were together, and lastly, good-bye to my old life.

It's been real!

-Haruna Mikashiro
