When people get lonely they seek out others to ease their pain sometimes this results in people lying about certain things just to make their life more interesting or to get others to like them more. People have become in a way narcissistic because they actually think others care about what they have to say or what they are thinking or even the person they are. They think oh well I have a lot of people that like me or something similar but in truth all that is just built upon lies just to support their own security. When you become popular even online or in person it doesn't matter, because then you many times feel better about your self because these certain amount of people like you. In truth for people being who they really are fronts aside, no one may like them at all..and they are just living on an illusion just to keep their happiness. In the end when people find out the real truth, they either abandon them because they really are not a nice person or because they lied about something huge that they said that had happened to them that really didn't. Though all of us are a bit more narcissistic there are others who are more then others and those people take it to the extremes and give every one of us a bad name.
